  • Audi A4 B6 (2001 - 2005) - 03 1.9 tdi non starter 9 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Just wondering if any of you's guys have ever encountered anything like this, having replaced the front disc's and pad s the week prior I am now left with a non-running vehicle, which gives me all the faults displays, but points to there being a fault in the abs system,it will turn over but not start and does not display the glow plug light in the display when the ignition is turned on,Everyone I have consulted says this has to be taken to a dealer for diagnosis.how does it go from a running vehicle to a breakdown with no prior warning, the audi dealer at which it presently is have placed it on their machine and comeback saying it will not communicate with there computer, surely this was the aim of these machines to narrow problem down, their now telling me it could possibly require a few hrs labour to issolate the problem,no guarantees.where do I go from here????????
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.6 EML on after plug change 23 Jan 2009 (Forum)
On return home I managed to remove the last plug and replace with new (this makes a full set replaced). The car runs superb now but the engine management light is permanently on (doesn't seem to have any power loss or running probs). Should i take this to a main dealer and ask them to check out/remove the code or will it sort itself out?
  • Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 2002 2.2 anti pollution warning 19 Dec 2008 (Forum)

(will go faster) slows down on hills. can tuen engine off for a couple of minutes then start up runs fine for 10 miles then loses power. if i do this a couple of times enging management light go's out. on short journeys i can live with the priblem. it's when i go on motorways. cant keep turning engine off. screwloose's advice was MAP sensor, glow plugs and exhaust temp sensor. where on the 2.2HDI engine will i find MAP sensor. haynes manule showes it for petrol model but not diesel. thanks for any help, advice given. steve
  • Renault Megane (1996 - 1998) - 1996 1.4 (8v) Cutting out (again) 12 Dec 2008 (Forum)
After the August post, it had a new CPS despite no fults showing, and the garage could find nothing wrong as it was running OK when it went to them. The most recent breakdown earlier this week had slightly different symptoms, in that it started to lose power necessitating changing down to keep her going before finally cutting out.
  • Volkswagen Lupo (1999 - 2004) - 03 1.4 Misfiring when cold 4 Dec 2008 (Forum)
My Lupo misfires under steady running (e.g. at a steady 30mph) when it is cold, but is OK once warmed up (petrol engine). My garage said it was the MAP sensor and but replacing this didn't cure the problem. I have seen some info on the web indicating that this fault can be caused by failure of the heater element in the lamda sensor, causing the ECU to think the engine is running too rich when it is cold, so it makes the mixture leaner until the mixture till the engine misfires.
  • Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 94 1.4 hi fuel consumption 23 Nov 2008 (Forum)
hi all .... i've had a renault clio I RT auto 94 for 7 months... after driving a frontera 2.2 lwb for the past 8 years .....wow its cheap to run.... well it was, its gone from about 40mpg to under 20mpg if im gentle.... its running normally.... i did the usual checks, all connections, plugs, leads... i took the air filter off and ran it, i can see lots of fuel coming from the single injector into the throttle body, i know visually there is too much fuel going in but i dont know the cause.. i'm told the lambda sensor would cause this but im not sure if im testing it right, putting the multi-meter probes into the terminals on the multi connector what readings should i get.... what else should i be testing ?...
  • Peugeot 405 Diesel (1988 - 1996) - 1994 1.9TD Fuel problem 24 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I am thinking that air is getting in somewhere under the bonnet and allowing the diesel to run back into the tank, but i don't know where and i can't see any leaks. Has anyone else had this problem on the peugeot 1.9 TD engine? cheers Jon
  • Honda Accord UK (1998 - 2003) - 02 2.0 misfiring on start up 6 Oct 2008 (Forum)
My worry is that more trouble is on the way. If it turns out to be a major component it would be covered by the purchased warranty but this runs out end of December. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions regarding this and how I might best get it sorted? Many thanks.
  • Every cloud.... fuel prices. 2 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I'm struck by the number of surveys, statistics & anecdotals showing people adapting to rising fuel prices by using their vehicles less frequently and/or driving them more efficiently when they do. The latest surprising statistic is that the 'school run' is losing favour - apparently more kids now walk to school - good for the kids I say. Cycling is up, roads & mororways are less congested (esp. at rush hour/ school run time), more car sharing, less fuel spent in jams etc. etc.
  • Honda - 99 135cc GCV135/160 mower engine problem ? 24 Sep 2008 (Forum)
When it is running normally the governor lever resists any pressure on it however when the revs die and it pops and bangs there is no resistance on the governor lever perhaps indicating a problem with the govenor. I have yet to invistigate the workings of the governor fully.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.9GTTDI Battery/Alternator? 14 Sep 2008 (Forum)
When I check the car battery in the morning after an overnight stand it reads 12.1 V or thereabouts, with car running after a few mins levels out at 13.9V. A little bit of reading on the web tells me a fully charged battery should read more than 12.1 V and I should be getting over 14V with the alternator running.
  • Mercedes Benz SL W107 (1971 - 1989) - 1987 300SL- running rough 8 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Hi, My friend owns a 1987 Mercedes 300SL. During startup (cold or warm) the car is difficult to start, then hunts for a few seconds before sorting itself...
  • Need advice buying a car 5 Aug 2008 (Forum)
So I have approx 3.5K to spend, need something with 4 doors, not high insurance, not a massive engine that will cost a small fortune to run, something that isn't expensive parts wise, I do about 10 miles a day, just running to work and back, don't tend to long journeys. Any advice would be helpful as I have been trawlling autotrader and just don't know what is good to buy and what is best avoided.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2005 2.0 diesel - engine fault 2 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I really need some help from people who know about Ford Mondeo diesel engines. I have a 2005 Mondeo on which the warranty runs out in March. The car has had a new fuel pump under warranty. Sometimes the car still runs badly and goes into limp mode. The car has been at the dealer and they have tried to recode an injector but say that this has failed and a new injector will need to be fitted.
  • Used diesels on veggie oil..buy or not? 7 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Look if i paid a couple of hundred quid for a fairly simple old fashioned indirect diesel then if it runs ok on the muck, why not, if it blows up on 6 months i'm probably in pocket, but i will not be taking the risk of having someone else's experiment on my hands. In fact my old merc indy is adamant on having nothing to do with this mazola thing and his opinion is good enough for me.
  • MPG - what to believe and what to buy? 28 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Possibly looking at changing my Megane 225 for something more economical to run and insure/tax as I am likely to be increasing monthly mileage quite a lot from about 200 to around 700 miles a month just commuting. I always owned the 225 on the basis of lowish mileage and mainly a 'fun' car.
  • BMW 3 Series Touring 3 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I have always liked the look of these, rather than the normal coupe/saloon version. However, I don't really know much about them and would value any advice. My intention would be to run one for 3-5 years / 50-75k miles. I would be spending around 6K. Are they a reasonable prospect at this price or is it all image? Which engine would be best, etc? What I am getting at is the question of whether a 3 Series Touring is a viable and reasonable proposition when compared to a straight, run-of-the-mill, family car.
  • Oil Contamination Problem-Renault Scenic 16 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Although it is not as bad as it first was, I am still getting oil contamination into the header tank, but only at full running temperature and only after half an hour of running. I asked an old mate at Renault who's been in the trade 35 years whether it could be a crack in the block. He said he'd never heard of it over his 35 years in the trade.
  • Peugeot 406 diesel - mass air flow meter 22 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Whilst I know a bit about petrol engines diesels are very much an unknown quanitiy. At the moment the car is running ok but but I do get the impression of a lack of pick up as I accelerate. I also feel that I could probably run it as it is for a while but ultimately could damage the turbo etc The manual doesn't give too much info on the mass air flow meter but from the detail I could make a guess at its use however I would appreciate some basic info from yourselves.
  • Vauxhall Astra - ECU orange light 12 Feb 2007 (Forum)
The first problem is the instumental panel orange warning light (engine block symbol) is now on continuosly with the engine running. The engine is quite 'chuggy' at idle and seems prone towards running hot (fan cutting in more often even with January temps). The engine starts fine and there is no noticeable loss of power. I have heard horror stories of dealers reading fault codes and then causing the customer to spend successive big cheques progressing through a list of possible causes rather than achieving a technically accurate and cost effective diagnosis.
