  -Low coolant warning light came on today, after a 150 mile journey last night. Engine cold when light came on. -Very slow loss of coolant (the pint I replaced is still there after driving around, and the car has been driven a few thousand miles since having coolant replaced) -Loss of power when cold.

  My Volkswagen Golf 2002 has white residue around the oil filler cap, is this always a sign that the head gasket has failed?

  [alerted by low level warning light] Recovery operator refitted hose, but omitted to bleed system, and two miles down the road 'stop' warning sign required me to stop immediately,- and was subsequently recovered by transporter! PROBLEM - Notwithstanding that coolant has been replaced and bled, the temperature gauge fluctuates between 72 - 76 [90 has been the norm for the past 10 years] - and coolant appears to be escaping from the expansion tank overflow pipe.

    When last serviced the mechanic mentioned there was swarf in the fluid, which I have since been told could be a result of coolant boiling, condensing into waater and then rusting the gearbox - is this true/possible?? thanks for any help

  Hi there, I am hoping someone may be able to help me. I am getting a 'STOP check coolant' light coming on (usually during start up in the morning). The first time I checked my coolant it was low so topped it up. When it came on again I checked and the level in the water header tank was on the max level.

  Just part exchanged today for this vw. Red oil and coolant light came on and the red stop light. I topped up the oil and coolant and drove car home. The car seems to be in good condition with the last owner having the car since 2003. The car drove very smoothly but the oil warning light intermittently came on and off, but finally stayed off after 28 miles approx.

  Fan didn't kick in, mechanic wiped connection and it started to come on when the red light showed on dashboard, so new switch fitted to radiator. Fan seems to be working correctly but the engine overheats because coolant leaks away. Car gets hot as soon as I hit heavy traffic and coolant begins to stream away from this small tube attached just underneath the cap, completely emptys itself on my drive after journey finished.

  Hi, I have recently discovered a problem with my 406: the in-car heater wasn't working so I checked the coolant levels and found it is loosing coolant. Its only losing it slowly, so I ran the engine to see if I could see any leaks. Basically, the leak is coming from the top of the engine somewhere. On the top of the engine behind the oil filler cap there is a plastic cover which houses the spark plugs (I'm no mechanic so please bear with me!)

  Would this symptom mean head gasket problems and also how rapidly would the coolant level in the reservoir drop if coolant were getting into the engine and coming out of the exhaust pipe (the white smoke) ?? thanks bud

  Looking to buy this car Mot failure for o2 and lambda with eml illuminated. Has not boiled. Evidence of coolant leak at head gasket. 2 small top ups of coolant over last 500 miles. Could thereby anything other than head gasket..? Any advice welcome. Thanks Mike

  After parked for half an hour, about a golf ball shaped amount appeared. Can I top up the coolant with water to get it to the garage for an inspection? Or does it have to be special stuff? It's not oil, so I'm assuming coolant.

  While topping up my C-Max's coolant today, I accidentally spilt some onto the top of the coolant tank, which dripped down into the engine. It wasn't an enormous amount. Is this anything to worry about, or do I need to do anything about it like rinse it off?

    Then on Saturday we were driving locally and noticed masses of steam coming from under the left-hand side of the bonnet and a burning smell. When breakdown arrived they said that the coolant was empty and there was lots of liquid sloshing around the bottom of the car. They couldn't do any more diagnosis on the road but thought it was a coolant leak. I took it to the original garage today - they fixed it saying that the end of a water pipe had blown off (I should have asked exactly which part but didn't) they'd replaced the pipe head and refilled the coolant (and charged £75).

  It had lost power on the dual carriage way, temperature gauge at max etc. It turns out there was no coolant, and I admit I haven't checked it for a while (will do from now on) though was only serviced a few months ago (no excuse I know). My garage is very good, immediately topped it up and ran it for ages.

  I have had a 1997 Audi A4 1.8 SE (ADR 20V engine) for seven trouble-free years and 120,000 miles until earlier this year when it started using water but in fairly small quantities (1 pint in 500 miles). This continued for several months while I tried to work out whether I had a coolant leak or a head gasket problem. Suddenly the problem worsened when oil started entering the coolant and collecting in the expansion tank (1 pint in 50 miles). I had it checked an my local garage who confirmed that it was the head gasket as they found exhaust gases in the coolant as well.
