  • Zero Rate VED for Classics 30 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Looking around it seems that the average age of cars has gone down in the interim. Does anybody know: - a) How many cars were zero rated at that time b) How many are still in use (i.e. have a zero rated VED disc) c) How many cares it would apply to now if the 25 year limit were re-introduced?
  • Insuring Grey Import on agreed Value Policy 18 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Up to now I've insured my 1995 Celica GT cnvertible (Grey Import) with Adrian Flux on an agreed value policy (no "no-claims" basis), with a limited mileage as with most classic cars - I was advised this was the best way to insure it in case of a write-off situation to ensure I got the correct value of the car paid out and it wasnt just vaued as "a 13 yr old celica not worth much...."
  • Vauxhall Corsa D (2006 - ) - dashboard reflections 11 Dec 2007 (Forum)
this effect is ameliorated somewhat as a black finish is used but I bet that under normal driving conditions one would be thoroughly irritated by those damned distracting reflections all the time, in the middle of the windscreen - a sort of large inverted U-shape. Such a shame for what is, ostensibly, a car with good dynamics. My partner is now looking to find the old Corsa which at least, from the fascia aspect, does not suffer those absurdities of design.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - What common-rail diesel can you rely on? 4 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Previous car was a 2003 Picasso Hdi - loads of problems, including pump failure at 10K. (warranty covered this) Presently driving 2005 Mondeo TDCI (130bhp, Euro IV). No major problems (apart from gearbox out to lubricate splines on input shaft - as clutch not always disengaging) I usually buy a 6-9 month old car shortly after my existing vehicle gets its first MoT, so I'm looking at changing mid-2008.
  • Thinking of buying a Polo or Golf 13 Sep 2007 (Forum)
hi there, I'm thinking of buying a VW Polo in order to replace my old 1995 Corsa (that has had its doors bent back so much, they're like tin foil :( ). No overall reason for a Polo, other than the percieved VW reliability, I just want a car that goes forst time, every time, and doesnt need servicing too often.
  • Do you believe in risk compensation? 5 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I'm not advocating a spike in the centre of the steering wheel here, but do you think the widely advertised NCAP 5* rating and dozen airbags makes for a worse driver? I ride a bicycle, a motorbike, drive an old car and a new car and to come absolutely clean here, I find that my level of attention changes depending what I'm in / on. Your confessions are welcome here, just between the two of us. Or if you think your might of intelligence can control it, what do you think about all the other weak-willed who let it affect them?
  • HJ Mini tests 19 May 2007 (Forum)
The overall 'feel' from the various tests on HJ has been one of paradise lost, yes, some things have improved, but some overall fun/driveability has been lost, along with it seems, some ride comfort. I compared the new/new Mini with the old/new Mini in the showroom, to my eye it looked bloated & just too big. I totted up the cost of options & the whole package seemed more an exercise in 'options trading' (just like 'finance deals' are the real money-spinner for some main dealers) - the base car is made to look almost unattractive, but the options list soon makes the car look overpriced, imho, when compared to the alternatives.
  • Applying Extreme Wax successfully 5 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Hi guys I have had a pot of Extreme Wax in the garage for a while - it is in a Lime Green tin , I think it is a Turtle Wax product and thought I'd have a go on my newly washed car yesterday. I applied it with the applicator sponge, which got a little wet as the car was still damp - don't know if this affecs the result ? Rubbed it off with a clean worn-out cotton cut from an old T-shirt (but soft and freshly laundered) Didn't seem to polish up very shiny, but in the rain today the water beads up like nothing I've ever seen before !!!

  • Laid up Rover 214 23 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Fingers crossed I wil have a job some distance away and the plan was to use the 214 for a few days a week (400 miles) to save my current daily car from any more deprecication (until my 6months are up and start recieving car allowance) If its left in the garage what can i do to stop it going rotton inside and out and what tips to keep it ok until I use it again??
  • Mazda Tribute intermittently revving up 30 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I drove the car today but found nothing wrong. I know very little about cars but I suspect it could be the injection system playing up, I'm thinking sticking valve maybe. Obviously, if it happens again regularly I will need to take it to the Mazda garage. 1) Am I right about sticking valve ?
  • VED and hypocrisy 24 Mar 2006 (Forum)
An average medium to large petrol car can now cost over £200 to tax however the less efficient cars already make a much larger contribution to the Chancellors coffers via fuel duty. And there is a reasonable hike for Pre March 2001 vehicles as well.

I really would like the car to still look "standard", no big holes etc. Thanks for any advice on radio/MP3 etc received.
  • Danger of long service intervals 5 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Took a 2 year old BMW 318i Compact for a test drive from Croydon BMW - lovely car only 16,600 miles auto.leather.sunroof etc. but on start up it rattled like a diesl for 2 mins and the oil warning light came on. Checked the oil level under pretence of looking at the engine and it was well below minimum and not very clean.
  • K reg Renault Clio - choke? 11 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Hi, I've got an old K reg (1991?) Clio RT that has just recently developed a problem. At the first cold snap in Sept I drove about 100 miles on motorway and then left the car for a few hours in a beach car park exposed to a cold wind.

  • Mondeo diesel TDCi auto power loss 24 Feb 2005 (Forum)

  • £5k Mondeo from auction 22 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Condition is important. Would like a nice one, not a shed. So then guys, what can I expect for £5k? How old am I looking at, and what sort of mileage? I'll probably be contacting Joe Dowd the auction buyer and asking if he can source one from BCA. I had contact with him last year when I was on the hunt for my Mk2 and although he was unable to find me a car, he was a thoroughly nice chap and I'd like to use him again.
  • Advantages of Depreciation 29 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Say you have a large amount of cash on deposit and an estate that is a small amount (say £20k) over the IHT limit. Assume that you're old enough or ill enough to make another 7 years look unlikely. If you invest the cash, it's going to grow and make the problem worse. But, if you buy the right car, it could easliy lose £25k in a short space of time.
