  • Astra cylinders 5 May 2004 (Forum)
Despite 4 visits to both to our local independant mechanics, and the Vauxhall main dealership, no-one has been able to determine why our 16V M reg Astra is mis-firing on Cylinder One. The coil has been changed, leads plugs etc swapped from cylinder to cylinder, but always it is Cylinder One that is at fault. Oddly, it fires perfectly when the engine first starts, but after 10 to 15 seconds the problems start. Any ideas anyone?

  • Rotor arm 1 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Hello everyone, My Herald 13/60 has developed an occassional stutter or misfire. I suspect electrics and am replacing leads, contact breakers, plugs, distributor cap, and ... rotor arm. However, the rotor arm will not budge. I think it is just a push fit. Any tips? Do I need to do some thing brutal like grab it with a pair of big pliers?
  • Citroen AX immobiliser 12 May 2002 (Forum)
I have a 1996 AX with a dealer fit immobiliser. The sensor ring that goes around the ign-barrel (picks up a signal from the key fob) has a break in the very thin co-axel wire leading to it.I have tried to repair but it is not reliable. Main Dealers can`t help and the name on the module is Texalarm TKF 165 GB. I`am not looking forward to removing it so any advice on repair or supplier would be greatly appreciated.

  • Ex-company cars 6 Feb 2002 (Forum)
It seems that a lot of drivers of larger engined cars are to be hammered with tax increases of the order of £1200 p.a for something like a 2.5 Mondeo. This leads me to assume that the lease companies must be inundated with unwanted larger cars such as BMW's, Audis and the like. Are auction prices and, therefore, retail prices for these cars falling and, if so, by how much ?

  • Mercedes A-Class - A190 Starting issues 16 Aug 2012 (Forum)
I've checked voltage at the starter under cranking with the key and reads near battery voltage. (Red lead on the multi-meter on Purple and white wire by the positive terminal and the black lead on battery earth. - Key on crank position.) It's a semi auto transmission and I have been told it cold be the "starter inhibitor switch", I've tried to locate this and I believe I have, but I'm unsure. - When I remove the gearstick and gaiter, there is what looks like a cylindrical black item, connected to the gearstick via a little black shaft.
  • Ford - KA - Advice NEEDED - Rear end shunt 21 Mar 2011 (Forum)
I realise that if you go into the back of someone the insurance company pretty much says no contest, but i am not the lead driver on the policy and the lead driver is looking at loosing all their no claims. I need good advice here. I'm not trying to get out of anything, but she is claiming that i cracked her front windscreen, and knocked the front tracking out, and one scratch to the back bumper.
  • Renault Espace (1985 - 1997) - 94 2.0 Engine loses power for a second or two 12 Jul 2009 (Forum)
This shows as uneven idle speed, too, fine when cold and (probably) fine after running for half an hour, but otherwise fluctuating 500- 850 rpm (should be steady 850). It's just had a new distributor, spark plugs and plug leads as part of a horribly expensive breakdown repair. How do I track down what's wrong? My guesses are ignition (I'll get it a new coil lead soon, since the original is old and stiff and 15 years old), fuel supply or engine management electronics.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1999 1.8 - Fuel leak & more 13 May 2008 (Forum)
I have a fuel leak coming from under the filler pipe leading to the fuel tank. Hard to see exactly where from but it looks like it's coming from some way up the pipe leading to the filler cap. It's not gushing (yet!) just a constant drip. It leaks when I fuel it and when driving but stops when i park up.
  • 1987 Renault 5 ... cutting-out 17 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I don't mind paying to get something fixed, I'm just worried about spending a lot of money on diagnosis that leads to mounting expenses when the car is worth so little (it has 70,000 on the clock). So if anyone out there can offer their ideas it would really help. Thank you JJJ
  • 306 XSi Engine behaving oddly... 11 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Over the next few weeks the problem started happening more frequently. Pug dealer said it needed new plugs, HT leads and coil pack. I changed all of these (except no HT leads, the coil pack sits on the plugs directly) but the problem persisted and it's happening more often. A reliable way to bring the problem about is to hoof it over 5000 rpm for a sprint.
  • Mazda MX-5 - Deeply Flattened Car Battery, Revival Techniques ? 7 May 2014 (Forum)
The 'settled open circuit voltage' is always a healthy 12.6 to 12.8 volts but as soon as you apply a load to it, even just sidelights, the voltage falls to below 12 volts and attempting to engage the starter motor/solenoid just results in a rapid clicking noise, at the best, and battery volts falling to below 8 volts, even just on full beam headlamps with the engine not running. Everything else electrics wise seems to be ok and once 'started on the jump leads' the engine ran smoothly and battery volts stabilised at around 14.8 volts with the alternator keeping things all hunky dory! Does anyone know how to 'disolve or disperse' the heavy sulphation in the honeycomb lead matrix inside this relatively young battery (Owners say that used daily, these batteries can last for over 15 years) to release the full surface area and the associated 200 amps or so necessary to turn the starter motor over?
  • Civic diesel MK8. - New battery and voltage 7 Aug 2025 (Forum)
Old battery had died,11.6 V and unable to charge ( 5 years plus old). New battery installed.  At terminals out of the box it read 12.9V and in car with leads attached ( but not switched on ) 12.85V.  Should I be doing a parasitic drain check ? I omitted to check terminal volts with the engine running, but alternator light went out as usual.  Battery is correct 74AH 680AMP.
  • Peugeot 308 SW - Axle Rust 3 Oct 2024 (Forum)
It drives really well but I don't know how much axle rust is ok and how much should be expected of a 2016 car. It looks like it's flaking but I'm unsure whether that could lead to failure. I've linked to an image here as I couldn't see a way to post an image. Can remove link if that's no allowed on the forum. https://ibb.co/kx6gdBv Thanks
