  • Dumb brakes question - Citroen Xsara 24 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Car is a Citroen Xsara. Can't remember ever changing the brake fluid as have had no problems with the brakes. Have never put on the brakes as hard as I can before, so don't know if this is normal for the car. :)
  • Brake pedal query 17 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I hope you understand this problem to comment on it. Following application of the brakes, which work fine and efficiently, and when say the car is completely stationary at a junction, in traffic, etc.,and the hand-brake is not applied, and the foot remains on the brake pedal, I can 'feel', on the sole of my shoe which is on the brake pedal, a sutle 'ticking' sound, intermitently.
  • 1991 Cavalier rearbrakes failed mot 20 May 2004 (Forum)
Then I got the same shaking down the steering wheel like when your front brake is warped but this time I was not braking just driving at 50mph and I was coming up to a round about so I went to slow down and there was no brake there whatever just a soft peddle and the brakes where just there I stopped the through using the gears and hand brake.
  • Shogun Sport 2001 - Mitsubishi Shogun Sport brake load valve 12 Sep 2020 (Forum)
But the front brakes are still working OK and the fluid doesn't go any lower. So the dual circuit part of the system is working. I think that the feed from the front brakes which goes into the brake proportioning valve must only work on some internal piston/regulator and is not directly linked to the rear brake line.
  • Rover 25 - Brakes (or lack of?!) 29 Jul 2006 (Forum)
(Both vehicles had around 8,500 miles on the clock). I then drove this vehicle (very tentatively as I did not trust the brakes). I turned off at a junction travelling at an approximate speed of 15MPH and the car in front braked. I depressed the brake pedal and the brakes appeared not to have functioned as I would have expected, I therefore pressed harder on the brake pedal which proceeded to put the car into a skid which unfortunately I was not able to control despite pumping the brake pedal.

  • Front Brakes on early Citroen ZX 27 May 2006 (Forum)
I have a Citroen ZX Avantage 1.4, 1992(J); in many ways it is an excellent car - very well-balanced, nice to drive, and very light for its size. The problem is the brakes; the calipers at the front are prone to locking under heavy braking, and one of them gives rise to extraordinary creaking sounds when the brake pedal is depressed and when the car is stationary. There is also judder when braking How can one optimise the performance of these brakes (and fix the creaks!)
  • Passat B4 excessive brake pedal travel 27 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The brake pedal on my 95 Passat 1.9 TDI has always needed to be pushed down quite a way before there is any real response from the brakes. Otherwise, the brakes are effective. Recently the pedal travel has got worse.
  • Squeaking 25 Nov 2002 (Forum)
It would squeak when I am driving in a straight line or NOT touching the brakes. It would stop squeaking when I go round a corner or touch the brakes very lightly. What is more interesting, as mentioned above the squeaking would stop when touch the brakes very lightly, then start squeaking when I brake slightly harder, then it would stop when I brake slightly harder still.
  • 2009 Hyundai i20 - Both rear brake drums lock up when braking. 27 May 2022 (Forum)
Hi,  When driving my car especially first thing in the morning out of my driveway and I apply the brakes the rear brake drums lock up causing the rear wheels to skid. When I drive a few miles its not as bad. The car does not appear to drag when driving, but I still have to apply the brakes very gently so that the wheels will not lock up.
  • Brake lights. Peugeot 406 HDi. 2 Jan 2005 (Forum)
If i start the engine and then turn it off with my foot on the brake pedal the engine will continue to run until i release the brake pedal. Have replaced the switch behind the brake pedal but this has made no difference. Any ideas on what could be causing the problem or remedies appreciated.
  • Brake imbalance issue!!! 25 May 2003 (Forum)
Hi there, My wife's Toyota Carib ( a 4WD 1.8 Corolla Jap Import) failed its WOF (like the MOT) the other day, due to brake imbalance. The deal is is that the rear RH brake is 36% down on the rear LH brake. I had a mechanic take the drums off and clean the brakes, but on re-testing the RH brake was still 33% down.
  • Help required - Astra brakes 3 Dec 2002 (Forum)
The garage says there's nothing wrong with the braking system. My questions : 1) Could there be a problem with the brakes or is this a common fault with Astras ? 2) I called out a local garage when the brakes first stuck. They freed it by reving hard which unstuck the brakes.
  • BMW 320d automatic - cruise control and brake lights 13 Jan 2016 (Forum)
basically i would like to know that whilst using cruise control if the system reduces your speed, do the rear brake lights come on as if you were braking normally with the foot brake?
  • Brakes squealing - Mercedes 9 Mar 2004 (Forum)
My MB E320 CDI has developed a horrific brake squeal. Unless you are braking very softly the brakes will squeal. The car is only just over a year old and has only covered 22,000 mls. What causes this and what are the remedys?
  • Audi A4 brake lights light on their own 25 Jun 2021 (Forum)
Hi My Audi A4 Avant has recently developed an odd habit. Overnight, the brake lights come on on their own and stay on until I depress the brake pedal. On one particular occasion, I know that the brake lights were NOT on at 2 in the morning, but at 6, they were. I've had a look at the brake pedal but all seems OK.
  • Ford Mondeo mk3 (2004) diesel 130 ghia. - Brake light. 22 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Anyone any idea, why the hi level brake light is illuminating when i switch on the main lights? The brake lights are fine, when no main lights on,and just the side brake lights come on when brakes applied with main lights on, as hi level is already on!
