  • When do I need to change the oil on my Aygo? 8 Sep 2016 (Ask HJ)
I have just purchased a Toyota Aygo with an automated manual gearbox. The salesman has told me to get the oil changed after a month. I have never heard...
  • Ford Focus - Misfuel - Diesel in Petrol Car ( 9 May 2016 (Forum)
I am disputing this the company as the Branch Manager agree it is his fault , but say it is still my mistake. Also in the contract I signed as nothing mentioned on the on type of fuel car it was given to me.   But now , I am not sure what damage it has happened. AS far I have seen all forums says, car should be  fuel drained as Disesl will act a lubricant and car will need to throughly cleaned and flushed out of Disesl and will be ready to run.
  • MINI One D - Mini one D doesn't start when engine is hot 2 Oct 2015 (Forum)
I had a diagnostic test done by my mechanic and had the crank shaft sensors changed (mini official part) and a fuel pump (which seemed to fix it for a week or so) then I found a post about air being in the fuel line and one of the return valves could need changing. I told my mechanic about this however they can't seem to find any valves on the fuel line.
  • Ford Focus Estate - 2004 focus 1.8 tdci , power loss , bad starting 30 Jul 2015 (Forum)
No change Cleaned out the egr valve ...no change  Checked all hoses    Then she failed to start    New glow plugs fitted ..no change    Green flag out , 2 fault codes one for turbo boost ( pretty sure its the sensor and its sending her into limp mode ) no big drama    Second was for fuel pump pressure ...suspect fuel pump ...changed the filter first , split the old one open for any metal off the fuel pump and it was as clean as water so I can't see it being the pump    Injectors were fine on the diagnostics    Bunged in bg244 as I was already chucking a few Bob at her    Any ideas ( even better cures ) would be smashing   Weavy
  • Is there a future for diesel cars? 18 Jan 2015 (Ask HJ)
My 520d Touring has been 100% reliable over 9 years / 65,000 miles from new - just needed routine servicing and a battery. I've been planning to replace...
  • Vauxhall Vectra B - Vectra B starting issue 17 Apr 2014 (Forum)
It can take a while to turn the engine over when the car has been stood still for over 12 hours or so. Turns out its a fuel issue, i dont know a great deal about motors but there has been a pump system fitted along the fuel pipe i presume, situated under the bonnet at the top of the engine(under the wipers) which includes a manual bulb type pump. a mobile mechanic told me to manually pump this to prime the diesel to the engine, which works to an extent. so decided to drop it in with my regular mechanic who suggests its the fuel pump drawing in air and its too expensive to repair on an old car. im wondering a) why was this not an issue on cold starts ?
  • Honda Accord i-CTDI Sport 2004 Diesel - Failure to Start 22 Aug 2013 (Forum)
Thereafter, the car drove considerably smoother and the engine was quieter but it still took about 20 seconds to start. I returned to the garage and I was told the fuel pump was not generating enough pressure and needed replacement. I gave the go ahead and a new pump was fitted for £120 ( I was told this wasn't from Honda but worked well on my car model and I had also gotten the fuel filter changed less than two (2) months before all of this started).
  • Zafira 1.8 petrol auto 2003 - Cold start problem - please help !! 1 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Had a new radiator fitted first to cure the leak although I know this is nothing to do with this issue, just trying to give all the history I know Thought maybe it was it not getting enough air, so the air intakee valve was stripped and cleaned and replaced with a new air filter at that point Still didn't seem to want to fire, so full set of new plugs were put in, coil pack has been replaced also Oil filter and oil changed Checked fuel pressure, the rail is primed and there is loads of fuel pressure so didn't appear to be a fuel supply issue Took it to a garage, had diagnostics done, ecu reported a faulty crank shaft sensor, replaced this, made no difference (although it has cured the rough idle when it is running) Battery is good, in fact cranked it over with battery attached to a second huge battery at same time and still same issue, so don't think it can be any issue there!
  • Does using cruise control increase fuel consumption? 1 Jul 2012 (Ask HJ)

  • Hyundai i10 - fuel economy and journey length 20 Nov 2011 (Forum)
I bought a new Hyundai i10 1.2 and like some people on the forum I am disappointed with fuel consumption. BUT do I have unrealistic unrealistic expectations? I average 42 mpg  driving on A and B rural roads with a few stops and starts. I guess this is what is "combined" driving?
  • Vauxhall Vectra B Diesel 2.0 Dti - fuel supply problem/ oil pump 27 Jul 2011 (Forum)
I have a 2000 X Vauxhall Vectra 2.0 Dti, which I inherited from my Grandfather. It has only done 57,000 miles. It has an intermittent fuel supply problem, which two different garages have put on their diagnostic systems and diagnosed as an oil pump needing replacement, and that as this is integral to other parts of the engine and its management, the cost is £2000 for parts and £500 for labour.
  • Vauxhall - 05 1.9 tdi Vivaro Starting then dying immediately 10 Jul 2011 (Forum)
I have been having loads of trouble with my van but recently was under powered and turbo not kicking in till around 2600 revs and glow plugs light coming on occasionally. Put it into a garage no codes found but I asked them to check fuel filter as I had heard horror stories of filings and destroyed high pressure fuel pumps all was ok on that front. Finally got codes by driving around with comp plugged and codes suggested excessive exhaust gases so EGR valve was taken out and cleaned found to be sticking but was put back in until new part arrived.
  • VW passat 1.9 TDi PD 115 AJM - hesitation under load & lack of boost at 3000 rpm? 19 Apr 2011 (Forum)
Seems there is a vacuum? Now really stuck as to what to do next, people have suggested changing fuel filter, replacing the housing to the fuel temp sensor, cleaning the MAF connector, replacing the thin hose that runs from the exhaust near the turbo to the ECU? ? dont know whether any of these things will help or if there is any new ideas people might have?
  • 2004 ford mondeo 1.8lx - loss of power under load 28 Mar 2011 (Forum)
since this began its been to the garage 4 times and every time it is showing no dtc faults.  The mechanics have so far changed the fuel filter, the spark plugs and the ignition coil. they dont think its the fuel pump because the fault only shows up under load. that didnt work so it went back again and they took the cap off the fuel tank incase it wasnt venting properly, they put a blanking plate on the egr valve incase that was at fault.
  • Ford Fiesta Saloon - 3 years with ford Fiesta 1.6 TDCi 30 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Well its been three years trouble free motoring with just one glitch with a cooling fan relay stick on, but rectyfied in one fix by the ford dealer with no issues at all. Now its covered 20 K the fuel consumption is improving and we covered 279 miles on thursday with 200 on motorway & 79 all town work, filled back up at the same fuel pump on the same forcourt untill the fuel was level with the neck & it took 22 lts dead so averaged 60.1 to the gallon and that was with good motorway speed just trying to crack on for the day.
  • VW Sharan 1.9 TDI 1999 - VW Sharan 1.9 TDI fuel smell making us ill :-( 22 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Since i bought it, the vw every so often has been giving off like an unburnt/exhaust diesel smell which is coming into the cab and making us feel sick. So far I have got the garage to:- 1. change the cabin/pollen, air, fuel, oil filters and oil. 2. checked the mpv underside, including exhaust for any issues - none found! 3. jet blasted and cleaned any oil/dirt/grease from the engine. The damn smell is still there!
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2001 2.0 DuraTorq DI loss of power 1 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Took it to the official Ford garage yesterday, hooked it up to the computer with no clear response.... just a "possibility" from the technician that the issue may be with the fuel lift pump attached to the fuel tank. Before shelling out several hundred Euros in purchasing a new pump with labor, another opinion would be appreciated. Here are the symptoms: 1. The car starts fine and initially drives fine..
  • Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - 05 2.0 Engine cut out 10 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I had the sediment light come on a few months back so i took off the fuel filter and drained it but didnt notice any water in the diesel. Put it back and all was fine until now. Do people think it is a bad batch of fuel i have got and this is causing the problem or?? Why would water in the filter only effect a cold engine?
  • Moving to peak district - recommend 4x4? 23 Oct 2009 (Forum)
So - Would a 4X4 car be a good idea (we know we dont need an SUV - & cant afford one with a cheap running cost/fuel efficiency). OR as driving skills is probably most important, should we just invest in advance driver training & some winter tyres?! A car with ESP? If we want a fuel efficient ish car with 4X4 for £9k, we're tempted by Octavia Estate 4x4 - pretty good reviews & fuel efficiency.
  • Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - 94 1.8D losing power at high revs 16 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I've renewed the air and fuel filters and made sure the crud gauze filter thing in the tank is clear, but no joy. I changed the glow plugs too as starting was poor (don't think they can have been changed since the car was new)- this has cured that problem and starting is now immediate.
