  • Renault Clio II (2001 - 2007) - 2001 1.2 Engine occasionally cuts out 29 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I notice that the plug leads seem to be the the carbon filled type which were never the best. Apart from that it must be a fuel problem. I think that the idle speed appears to be quite low. Any suggestions??
  • Audi A4 (1995 - 2000) - 98 1.8 Hesitation under acceleration 9 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I have modified my driving to use the accelorator gently and it all seems ok, but if i need to overtake, wether i change down or not, the hesitation is most apparent. There are no noises, oil leaks, it is serviced regularily, no warning lights, no excess fuel usage, no black smoke. It has just sailed through the MOT and i asked the garage to put it on the diagnostic machine and no fault was found. Someone said it could be the air flow meter? Thanks

  • Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - 03 2.2 engine management 14 Sep 2009 (Forum)
twice on one 30 mile trip last week. had it in twice. once they changed turbo hose. once, two days after service, they said it was fuel starvation but nothing to do with their service. have not any codes. £50 a time to put it on computer is a bit much when they dont fix it.
  • Immobiliser warning 10 Sep 2009 (Forum)
When I attempted to start it, it fired momentarily, then refused several attempts to start. Spent about 30 minutes checking under the bonnet, checking the fuel cutoff hadn't tripped (I noticed the absence of pump noise when switching on ignition). Just on the point of phoning for a taxi when the brainwave arrived. Went out and 'double - locked' it (usually just normal lock), unlocked it, and it started as normal.
  • Suzuki Jimny (1998 - ) - W reg 110k - What to look for ? 29 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Apart from the obvious is anybody aware of any little foibles that I should be aware of. I think I recall a comment in the dark and distant past of having to change something in the fuel tank!!?? at this age. I know that sounds a bit vague, bit I have a niggle in my memory somewhere. All help appreciated as usual. By the way it's a £1,000 Regards.........Martin.
  • Nissan Almera (2000 - 2006) - 03 1500 Another engine oil question 24 Aug 2009 (Forum)
The handbook recommends 10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-50 for an ambient temperature of -20 to 40c. It recommends 5W-30 for -30 to 15c. However, it also states '5W-30 will positively improve fuel economy'. What's the thoughts of the forum of me changing to the lower viscosity on an engine that's done less than 30K and gets it's oil changed every 5-6K?
  • modern turbo diesels - bad mpg at 60mph 18 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Do modern turbo diesels suffer bad economy if driven below full turbo boost for long motorway speeds ? I recently drove to Birmingham and back and I am sure that I used more fuel driving at 60mph than at 70mph. My reason for thinking is this :- Driving to Birmingham had heavy traffic so could only drive at 60mph, the engine speed was 2,000rpm (just within turbo boost) The return journey was driven 70mph the engine speed was 2,400rpm so this was well within the full boost of the turbo.
  • BMW 5-Series E60 (2003 - 2009) - 04 3.0 loss of power & smoking a bit from exhaust 16 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I recently changed my air filter, which was black and had remnants of oil or soot? Any ideas?? i've been told it might be crank bearing pressure filter or fuel filter??? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks, Col
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 1.8 misfire and loss of instruments 17 Jun 2009 (Forum)
when drivin the car starts to feel like it is miss firing, then then speed gauge drops to zero, the the mileage stops clocking up and the fuel gauge sometimes fluctuates. Occassionally the digital readouts go to a series of dashes and the rev counter also drops off. The car will settle down until i need to change gear and accelerate. Turning the ignition off then on will reset everthing but only for a matter of minutes then it all starts again.
  • Nissan X-Trail (2007 - ) - 2009 X-trail paintwork problem 1 Jun 2009 (Forum)
hi My father has recently purchased a brand new Nissan x-trail, 9 weeks ago, and has just washed it for it 3rd time and the whole of the OSR panel around the fuel filler has now got blemished and worn paint. An independant inspection from a friend, who owns a garage, has said it has definately had a BAD repair done to it. seeming as though it is less than 10 weeks old and bought from nissan Warrington.
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 99 1.7 Possible diesel leak 29 May 2009 (Forum)
The car has been moved about a bit since then, and each time, there's been a few drops of diesel underneath, but not much. I have seen one older post suggesting that filling the car up fully with fuel can cause this to happen a little and I did fill the tank up to maximum yesterday - is this a likely cause? And if not, does anyone have any other suggestions please?
  • Old mower won't start when hot 27 May 2009 (Forum)
The carb was full of oil and the jet completely blocked but after cleaning all that out and putting fresh fuel in it, it started after about 20 pulls. I have used it a few times since, it will start from cold first time but when hot it is a pain to start. Does anyone know why this might be? I have cleaned the airfilter and put a new plug in.

  • Volkswagen Polo III (1994 - 1999) - 95 1.4 Flat spot coming off idle. 3 May 2009 (Forum)
If you try to pull away normally there's a giant flat spot and somethimes it will die. I think the fault has been here for a while as there's new plugs fuel and air filters. I'm thinking throttle switch, thought I'd best ask first as I'm more a points and carburettor man!
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 93 1.8 Uneven tickover and smoke when hot 28 Apr 2009 (Forum)
My son has a P100 pick up with a 1.8 diesel engine (I've listed it as an escort as there's no P100 listing) but its the same engine, in fact it came from an escort (not an easy conversion) It starts and drives well, but on tickover when hot starts running unevenly and smoking unburnt fuel although its perfectly OK given a few revs. My impression is that the compression is low on one cylinder, as it only happens when its hot I would suspect valve clearances but have read that these engines rarely need adjustment.
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 98 1.8 Priming a diesel engine help! 21 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I have a dodgy fuel gauge and I stupidly let me diesel escort run dry without realising. I have put enough in from a can to get it started but it still won't turn over. Someone has said i need to prime it - never done this before and excuse my ignorance but I don't know enough to just fiddle around.
  • Citroen ZX (1992 - 1998) - 97 1.9 can it run on veggie oil? 17 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Have bought a scrapper zx (1997) to keep my 1993 in spares. Car has a few months mot left but bodywise its rough. It has the Bosch fuel pump which I have been informed can run on veggie oil. Would like to give it a go for curiosity if nothing else.....is it simply a matter of going to my local tesco and buying a few litres of veggie oil and putting it in?
  • Drivers catch green lights 'wave' 16 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Environmental and motoring groups say carbon emissions will be reduced. Previously the Department for Transport (DfT) had discouraged the systems which reduce fuel use, resulting in less tax being paid to the Treasury. But now, rather than seeing green wave systems as a "cost" to the public purse, the DfT views them as a "benefit". See link for more.
