1.4 SXI - Astra Engine Fail 16 May 2013 (Forum)
Google reckons it was worth about £2500. If i new a new engine, is it worth it? I don't really want to pay for a local garage to tow it away, then charge me for inspecting it, then to tell me its gonna cost £2000 to fix, i'd rather just cut my losses and scrap it. Any advice thankfully appreciated as i'm really not up on cars at all. -
2.0 tdci - tdci engine cuts out 1 Jun 2011 (Forum)
What happens - when driving along it struggles to accelerate in any gear and slows down to below 1k revs cuts out abut 500rpm. the glowplug light flashes once just as the engine stalls out, ( sometimes when driving it stutters like its about to stall or there isnt enough fuel but then its fixes itself again and is fine for another few thousand miles) 1st call nov 2010- AA got it fixed after an hour to trying to start but could didnt know what the problem was. 2nd call dec 2010 - Advised AA to tow to garage without start from ford garage so they could see if any fault codes came up, no fault we detected and they couldnt fine any other problems, they thought it was frozen fuel so they checked fuel lines and replaced the battery, Today - called AA out and being towed to garage as we speak, i know its not frozen fuel in this weather. -
Citroen C3 (2002 - 2009) - 02 1.4 HDi driving us mad with random non starting 10 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Been to the Citroen dealer twice - first time injector seals and various pipes were renewed. Ran fine for a while then refused again. Towed back to the dealer who found a string of permanent faults on the computer, wiped them and it started fine again. On the tow there I plugged my phone into the cig lighter to charge it - result one utterly scrambled phone which has never worked again. -
Extortionate recovery charges 1 Aug 2009 (Forum)
The police told her that her comprehensive breakdown assistance would not cover her damaged car to be towed home. The following day a kindly neighbour took her to collect the vehicle and tow it away. She was informed that if she paid cash, the charge for recovery and overnight storage would 'only' be £260. -
Honda CR-V III (2007 - ) - Plated MAM please? 18 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Looking for a larger family car and decided we can compromise on 5 rather than 7 seats. Therefore been looking for what offers us most space and towing ability for our 1325kg MTPLM caravan whilst keeping within 3500kg total MAM (car + van, total MAM of car NOT kerbweight) so both myself and my wife don't have to go to the hassle of taking our B+E test. -
Toyota Landcruiser 80 Amazon (1990 to 1998) - Modern diesels - what's the point? 28 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I've been running my 3 litre CR auto D-Max for nearly 3K miles now, and I get about 29mpg running around, dropping to 25 when I tow 3 tons. My old '93 Landcruiser 4.2TD auto does around 25mpg, dropping to 22 towing 3 tons. So considering the LC is 15 years old, has a 6 cylinder engine, permanent 4wd, old style auto, 600kg heavier, bigger tyres, and is less aerodynamic, why does it not use much more fuel? -
Fiat Ducato clutch problem 1 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Is there any way to engage the clutch so the vehicle can be moved to a place of repair because currently my only option would to have the vehicle towed or relayed could not tow it with my car because the vehicle weighs two tonnes? I have Peter Russek pocket mechanic but it doesn't tell how to remove the clutch? Is there a manual or website which will help ru through the process.? -
Car insurance problem 3 Nov 2005 (Forum)
I found a company who do 1 day policies but they won't cover modified cars. Also I have a trailer for the Williams and my parents car to tow with it but there insurer will only cover me for a few times a year so adding this car to my own policy when I need to tow the Williams would be handy. Has anyone any recomendations of what I can do? -
Tachograph Needed for Trooper...? 8 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Hello once again... The latest "challenge" is the need to have a tacho. if I am towing for business. Or so it seems. It appears from a number of sources on the web that if I have a gross train weight of over 3500kgs or I am towing for hire and reward "long distance", then I need a tacho. -
Which cheap used SUV? 30 Jun 2018 (Forum)
So, I'm after a cheap (sub £9k) SUV and want something ideally 2-3 years old and relatively low mileage. The idea behind this is that I'm looking to tow a caravan, and I like the ideal of a higher seating position. Two that stand out are Dacia Duster and the SsangYong Korando. Any opinions on either? I'm definitely wanting to go for a diesel, my mileage is generally 20-25k a year. -
Vauxhall Meriva - sluggish Meriva 23 May 2014 (Forum)
Sometimes foot is flat on the floor and it will slowly increase in speed. Could this be the clutch? I tow a 750kg trailer but haven't done since last year as I'm not sure it would cope. Any help would be appreciated, many thanks -
Audi A3 Sportback Tdi - Power loss on Audi A3 6 Oct 2012 (Forum)
On odd occasions, most often when towing and gently accelerating away from a low speed, I lose power. The immediate symptom is that the Cruise Control function ceases. Sometimes I get the Emission Control System warning light come on. The whole thing is then resolved by turning off the ignition and turning it back on. -

Driver licence entitlement changes ? 15 Mar 2009 (Forum)
It would appear from the dvla web site ( http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/CaravansTrailersCommercialVehicles/DG_4022564 ) that an extra test is needed to tow trailers / caravans on licenses after 1st Jan 97. What is the extra test ? Or have I miss-understood the requirements. -
Driving tests further to the basic car one. 17 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I passed my car test shortly after the automatic allowance of licence to drive various interesting things was removed (I've had a full motorbike licence for far longer). This means I need to take additional tests to tow heavy trailers, for instance, or drive track-laying vehicles. What's automatically "on the licence" these days? What's the procedure for taking tests for the various classes? -

Car impounded - no tax or MOT 8 Aug 2007 (Forum)
just heard a colleague had his car towed for having no tax. Apparently it's £160 release fee, plus you'll need to provide a valid tax disc before they'll release it. But it also has no current MOT. So how do you get the tax without the MOT, when you can't get the MOT because the car's impounded?
