  • Car burning oil - Polo 5 Mar 2004 (Forum)
My dad said that older cars do burn a bit of oil and the VW book says that you should keep an eye on the oil level as an engine can use a litre per 1000km. Is this true? Should I be worried about it - I bought the car to run between manchester and middlesbrough so it is a workhorse and I only paid £500 for it. The engine does run very smoothly other than that and another intermittent problem which I wrote about. Cheers for any help.
  • Mondeo TD starting 27 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Hello all does anybody know if the Lucas cav injection pump has a cold start device and if so where is it the haynes manual is pitifully useless unless you have a bosch device I have the usual trouble here, first start after an overnight ends in the engine stopping after about 5 seconds you can do this about 5 or 6 times until it will run cleanly unless you give it a bit of gas and keep it there until its running in which case it fine . I have replaced the glow plugs and the filter housing incase we had an air leak and the battery is new i am now convinced it is a failed cold start on the pump incedently the dam thing starts first time every time after this palarva and pulls like a good un

  • Car advice needed please 18 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Car is needed for short journeys to the station , town, and as I have to drive to work 5 days a month 5 x 150 mile round trips to London (clear run on the way in, traffic on the way out) And the occasional trips away whan I have time off. I'm currently driving an old Volvo 360- which on the London run costs £17 for the round trip. Before this I had an Astra diesel which would do that journey on about £10.
  • Ancient Polo wiring fault 4 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Car - 1983 VW Polo. Fault - both wipers and heater fan seem to run slowly, especially when first switched on - they then gradually pick up speed. If you switch the wipers on when the heater fan is running full blast, the fan almost stops, then picks up again. Alternator seems to be charging, and battery is OK as well - will start the car even after it has been standing outside for a week or more.

  • pug 206 woes 27 Jan 2002 (Forum)
A girly friend of mine has a Met blue 98 S Pug 206 LX 3dr with air. She over-expended herself to buy the thing and can't really afford to run it. So now it is playing up bad (out of warranty in July) and she can't afford to fix it. A mechanic friend has looked at it and he says it is only running on 3 cylinders and she is complaining of loss of power.
  • Oil Type - GTI Teenagers 22 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Surely 0W-40 would be too thin at the temperatures experienced in the UK? Also, a large number of 17 year old GTI drivers run their 13 year old 160,000 mile motas on Mobil 1!!!!! With the notorious valve stem oil seals on the Golfs they must cost more mpg on Mobil 1 than the fuel itself. Is there any point running on Mobil 1 on such a car?
