  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 2006 1.6 Air con does not work 5 Jul 2008 (Forum)
My fathers 2006 Focus II 1.6 Duratec engine, air con stopped working yesterday. He had run the air con regularly at least once a week winter and summer following HJ's instructions about duration of running and cold first then hot to dry things out. Yesterday (hottest day of the year I guess) it did not work.
  • steam cleaning an engine 26 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I want to clean my engine (planning on doing this every 2000 miles or so mainly for asthetics) but years ago to do this you only had to make sure the engine was running and warm but in todays world, where cars are full of itsy bitsy complicated and delicate sensors and chips and all sorts of hi-tech digiwhatsits whats the best way of going about this. i dont own a pressure washer so it would be a trip to the nearest jet wash, would a degreaser be a. damaging to apply at home and then remove at the jet wash b. would degreaser be likely to render me unconsious halfway there as it heats up on the engine allowing noxious gases to seep into the cabin. c. be permenantly welded to the engine by the time i got to the jet wash also what needs masking or will having the engine running be ok
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 1993 1.6 Would like to get this car to 200k 26 May 2008 (Forum)
hello I've got apetrol astra estate that i would like to get to 200k (it's on 190) just to see if i can and because it's in quite good nick and i'm skint. Anyway.. It was running fine until it went for an MOT recently and has come back running like a dog. It judders when I pull off, and sounds uneven when idling, feels like it's not firing properly. I've ckecked the leads are on ok and it shouldn't be damp as it's roasting for a change.

  • Renault Espace (1985 - 1997) - 94 2.0 Starting / Idle problem 28 Apr 2008 (Forum)
It kicked over and I could hear the cylinders firing, but it wouldn't keep going when I stopped the starter motor. Happened a few times until it finally started, then died after 10 seconds running. Tride again and eventually it was running, but idle was erratic racing up and down. Settled down after a minute or two and drove fine. (No Check engine light came on) It recently had a fast idle problem and this was fixed by cleaning the Idle Control Valve.
  • Citroen Saxo (1997 - 2003) - '00 1.4 eng. code KFX - losing power when warm. 13 Apr 2008 (Forum)
It started again eventually and has since run perfectly. It was serviced fully this week and had the usual plus a fuel filter. These issues were present before the service. It "feels" like an electrical problem - possibly the coil pack - is this a weakness?
  • Volkswagen Passat (1988 - 1997) - 1997 'R' 1.9tdi 115BHP boost issue 30 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Hi all, Long time no post ! I have a work mate who is running a 1998 VW passet 1.9tdi (115BHP I think) which he had a number of issues with........ The current issue: The car starts fine and runs okay.........but it appears to have little to no 'boost', further more, when the car hits about 3000rpm you here a click and she drops into limp home mode (max speed 45/50 mph) The garage had replaced the N75 valve, I'm going to check it is piped up correctly for him first, but I'm not too sure that is the issue..........does anyone have any thoughts...the garage seems to think the waste gate is stuck....hummmmmmm Regards Hayden Murray
  • Audi A4 (1996) 1.8 starting problem 17 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Well it starts and revs for approx 2 seconds then dies. After repeated cycles of this it eventually starts and runs OK. Yesterday it did this at my local garage (it was in for a bodywork job). I left the car with them but of course it didn't play up for them. They suspect something in the ECU, possibly related to a relay in the fuel pump which switches from 'Startup' to 'Running' mode.
  • Toyota Auris (2007 - ) - Chugging noise 5 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I'm sure it was at the side of the car and not the engine bay. My only thoughts are it could be air running past the tyres or air running past the mudflaps or contours of the car. I also noticed a high tapping sound like stone on stone which gets faster as the wheels turn and wonder if that is a stone trapped in the tread of the tyre - but thought i'd mention it if the 2 were related :s Any ideas?
  • car security 19 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Jump starting one car from the other last night in the pouring rain. Both cars in position and the doner car running, shut driver's door and central locking kicks in (supposedly not working!) So there I am with a locked car (bonnet still shut), engine running with £30 of fuel in it in the pouring rain. It took half an hour's worth of thought and a few false starts but finally worked out how to gain access without breaking a window or cutting holes.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 1.6 petrol cam belt issues 8 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I recently had a new cam belt kit fitted as my car had done 80,000 miles. The problem is that now it seems to run very harsh at cruising speeds (65-70 mph). The rev counter shows the same revs at 70 mph as before, but the car feels like it's very shrill, almost like it's in 4th gear. Is this a common problem, or is it just the belt running in (I am an idiot when it comes to the technical stuff)?

  • complex wiring issue(not model specific) 17 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Does anyone know how to do this? The basis for this is an engine that runs on carbs and single point coil with dizzy. I need to cut the fuel pump in the case of engine stalling etc. I tried using a relay triggered by the coil's negative but this didnt switch off when the engine cut out, it appears the negative is still live.
  • vaux astra mk3 loss of coolant 15 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I have a astra mk3 s reg 1.6 8 valve , lost all coolant out of exspansion tank and heat .on topping up and running the car I noticed alot of pressure building up in the tank.I also took off the oil filler cap here i noticed mayonase on the cap and alot of whiteish smoke coming out of the opening. The oil on the dipstick shows no sign of water just seems on the oil filler cap also when you put your hand over the oil inlet in the rocker cover you seem to feel as though it as a vaccum suction.the engine seems to run ok , but I think the head gasket maybe on its way out.
  • BMW 740 rough when cold 6 Mar 2007 (Forum)
My mates 1994 BMW 740 is running poorly when cold. It starts fine and feels as though the mixture is OK for the first few hundred yards. After that the revs drop considerably and it feels as if it is going to stall, but doesnt.
  • 2E2 Carb Icing?? 15 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Taken from thread \"Pierburg Carb\" http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=8799 >> the engine runs fine. After covering a couple of miles, it >> will start to misfire, gradually getting worse until it cuts out. >> After a couple of minutes, the engine will start again and >> run for maybe 2 to 20 minutes before cutting out again Exactly the same problem here,on a Golf Driver,G reg,1.6,but with one difference, mine ONLY does it in cold or wet weather, its fine in the summer, any ideas?

  • CMAX Diesel Mayo 3 Jan 2007 (Forum)
When he pulled the oil filler cap off today he saw quite a bit of gunk underneath which he's pulled out. It looks like "mayonnaise" and I know this could happen with short runs but although he does these he tells me that he has done a few longer (20-30 mile) trips lately and I thought this might have disappeared. The car doesn't appear to be drinking coolant so is this just a combinatation of the short runs and the weather getting a bit cooler or is there something else(i.e. the vent has blocked on the oil filler cap?)
