  • Rover 75 CDTi or BMW 320d SE? 1 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Ok, I know I've asked similar questions in the past, but I'm still on the lookout for a 3-year old "keeper" to replace the Passat late this year/early next year. I'm essentially looking for something with similar equipment levels to the Leon, with nearly as good mpg (ie diesel), which is a bit bigger but still an enjoyable drive.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - Diesel versus Mazda 6 Petrol 13 Feb 2010 (Forum)
If so, I'd be a fool to let go of the reliable Mazda. At 8 years old, compared to my 4-year old 6, is the prospective saving on fuel a fool's mission? I really get the impression that my Mazda won't present me with a repair bill for years to come. I know everyone is going to scream "Octavia", and this is the model I favour to fulfill this brief, but I can not find one within budget and within a reasonable distance of home.
  • Citroen C3 8 year old - Car insurance putting us in harms way to save cash 29 Jul 2010 (Forum)
It turns out the car impact side spring is gone, other things have also gone wrong but the car is un-drivable till it's fixed, we had a MOT done 5 months ago and a service 2 months after that, the car was fine with no problems or concerns, coincidences happen but we were in a mad max type car crash and from that point the car was never the same, this is not about the money we will buy a new car on Friday the problem i have is safety my safety my wife and my childs and insurance companies acting like well insurance companies.
  • MG ZS - Am I just unlucky -is this warranty actually of us 3 Jun 2025 (Forum)
I have a 4 year old that has caused no problems at all until the weekend. The stop start activated at a set of lights and the car then would not restart. Being the weekend I had to have it recovered to home. It won’t start and in fact is really difficult to turn back off when trying to start it.
  • Standalon satnav using what3words 18 Apr 2025 (Forum)
I have an old car and currently use my phone with Googlemaps for navigation. This works well enough most of the time but occasionally let's me down in remote areas with poor or no mobile signal even when I think I have downloaded the map area.
  • Mazda cx3 - SJPN 26 Mar 2024 (Forum)
t=174646#m1433014), only the reason I didn't receive the NIP is because I forgot to update the v5c Log book with my new address - I only updated on my drivers license. Consequently, when I had a speeding offence 6 months ago, the NIP was sent to an old address. I am now charged with failure to respond (they managed to find my correct address for to send the SJPN (presumably from my drivers licenc and car tax etc... - What is my best option in order to avoid the 600 fine and increase in insurance premiums?
  • Estate or SUV 11 Mar 2024 (Forum)
Hi Looking for a  bargain suv or estate ideally under £3k We have 3 dogs ( 2 medium and 1 small ) and hence the reason our last car was an XTrail but it became expensive to fix/maintain. Also we shift stuff occasionally and use it for tip runs. We will only do about 4k miles a year so want a petrol ..now the question.. do I go for a reliable old Mk2.5 CRV or similar or a reliable estate such as an avensis/focus or even a subaru otuback.
  • VW Beetle 2.0 year 2000 - Emissions help MOT Failure 13 Sep 2023 (Forum)
Does anyone have any ideas how I can improve the emissions on my vintage VW Beetle the car has failed MOT on Emissions only.. it runs lovely no rust has lots of new parts including a 3-4 year old cat. Its had redex and the premium petrol always E5 the only thing it hasn’t had for a while is a new exhaust system. but I don’t want to pay for a whole new exhaust system if it will make no difference to the emissions because as far as I can see the exhaust looks good .. will changing it make a difference
  • Citroen Picasso C4 2015 1.6HDi - Type of air-con fluid in my '15 C4 Picasso? 8 Jul 2022 (Forum)
When I turn it on, I hear a light 'sizzling' sound from behind the dash, and no cool air. It has never had a gas top-up, so I'm hoping that's all that's needed on my 7-year old car. If it's R134a - as in my older C3 - then I can DIY the top-up (and still have a can of the stuff!). But can this also be done if it's the newer gas - R1234yf? And how can I tell which I have?

  • Audi A8 - Yuasa battery - Presumed battery failure - best make? 22 Apr 2021 (Forum)
After inadvertently flattening it a few weeks ago it has now twice failed to retain enough charge to start the engine.  The 8 and 9 year old batteries in our other two cars have on occasion been similarly flattened and continue to be reliable. Is there a known problem with this make? When I return it to Halfords can I insist on a different make replacement?

  • Honda Jazz - Ask HJ answers 26 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Now my wife has a Jazz (and is very happy with it's load capacity) ... but the load length (with rear seats folded) is only 4'6". Unless Mr Craig's 20 yr old son is unusually short, and has a very cut-down mattress, I think it very improbable that this was the solution the question demanded.
  • Ford Fiesta - 2004 - Replacement Headlight Unit 8 Jun 2020 (Forum)
Hi, My son has cracked the lens on his 2004 Fiesta headlight, we got a replacement from the scrappie but whilst driving it would just go off intermittently and when giving the connector a wiggle a sound similar to a small electrical motor could be heard. I put the old one back one to just to see if it was an separate issue but that one worked fine, does anyone know if some cars of this age had a self levelling headlights or know of any other issue. If there are self levelling units how do i tell them apart from the normal ones please when i get another one?
  • The £25,000 question 29 Jan 2020 (Forum)
I’m a mid-20’s single professional male looking for a new (or used) car but I just cannot find one perfect for my situation. My budget is max £25k, normally go for something with less than 10k miles on the clock and less than 3 years old. I need something which is head turning but professional, preferably a coupe, not too big (no bigger than a A4) as I have poor eyesight but has to go like stink (sub 8 second 0-60).

If I had the water buffalo it originally came with, I might be able to get that to stand on the bead, but unfortunately old equipment like this is often incomplete. TBC
  • New method of MPG calculations WLTP 25 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Maybe most people know this, but its taken us days to work this out. Since Sept 2018 new cars have to use the new method of calculating MPG called WLTP. Cutting a long story short, the quoted manufacturers MPG on here look like they are using the old NEDC figures. the New ones are much more realistic.
  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 13-07-2019 Part 2 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Ré Working Car Another option in the price range is a Mitsubishi Grandis; available in petrol or diesel models. Mine is 11 years old (2.4 petrol Classic), is currently worth under £1,000 according to HJ, yet has only cost me £9.65 in repair bills.
