And then, for no apparant reason it refuses to start the next time it is used which is often only a few hours later. The engine turns over no probs and there is always plenty of fuel. After a number of attempts to start and after a bit of waiting, the car will suddenly spring into life. I have read that it could be the fuel injection pump. Does anyone have any ideas please?

  • Ford S-MAX (2006 - ) - Turning your engine off at traffic lights? 16 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I?ve often heard that to start a car?s engine requires more fuel than leaving it running at a set of traffic lights for a short while? Is this true? If you have a warm engine, why does it need ?extra? fuel to start it? If this is true, how long would you need to be waiting at the lights before it becomes more economical to turn the engine off and re-start when the lights go green?

  • Saving weight 13 Apr 2007 (Forum)
There are lots of suggestions re reducing the number of items carried in order to impove fuel consumtion. Other ideas range from a personal diet to only half filling the washer bottle to carrying minimum fuel. While I was reconfiguring the Focus for max load I needed to remove the rear head rests.
  • 406 110bhp hdi 25 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I was wondering if the mpg will increase with more miles and if theres anything that can be done to get the most out of his fuel like changing to fully synthetic oil etc? He does around 35,000 miles a year so it makes a big difference to the fuel bill. cheers

  • peugeot 406 leaking injectors 1999 model 1 Feb 2005 (Forum)
But no problems when foot put down. (pulls away fine). But I have recently notice that one of the injectors has diesel fuel in the wells around it. Cleaned the wells up and fuel came straight back. Took to garage told needed new injectors. expensive job. Is it possible it just needs new seals and would this fault cause the above problems Thanks for any help Ian.
  • Two Stroke / Four Stroke 19 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Can some one out there enlighten me on the following questions that have been puzzling me for years, but nobody I have asked has been able to answer? Why do two strokes need oil mixed with the fuel instead of using a seperate supply from a sump, and in the same vein, how come four strokes need valve gear and all the associated mechanics when a two stroke can draw in fuel through a port in the cylinder?

  • Pug406 petrol leak 15 Sep 2003 (Forum)
My 406 has started seeping petrol from the junction of a small pipe with the top of (I think)the fuel pressure regulator, the pipe in question is about 3\" long with a square metal elbow at the top with a pipe from that disappearing under a plastic cover. I need advice on these points please: With the engine off will there be fuel in the short pipe?
  • What car shall I get? 29 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I do not want a car that sits in the garage all the time, or that is expensive. Furthermore, I want good fuel economy and a simple engine that I can work on myself. I was thinking of the Toyota Carina E 2.0i. Is this a good car and what fuel economy do current owners get from such a car? I have seen 50,000 mile fsh Carina's for around my price bracket.

Took the car to local garage that specialises in MB and he put his test box on, the message : " FUEL INJECTION SHUT OFF VALVE" came up. The question is should I get the Fuel Injection Valve replaced or should I get a new diesel pump?

  • Golf Mk2 GTI poor running 2 Oct 2002 (Forum)
It's almost like the feeling you get when you take your accelerator off the acclelerator for a fraction of a second (I'm not!). Fuel consumption down by about 6mpg. Car has new plugs, oil, fuel filter -next move is to check mix but I'm assuming its okay as it passed the MOT? Any ideas out there? Help! Tim p.s. engine runs smoothly above 3000 revs
  • Diesel Starting Problems 17 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Took it to a garage and they checked the glow plugs etc and could find nothing wrong. Have replaced the fuel filter. Problem is only recent - last 2 months. Later in the day - to come home, the car starts no problem. Only seems to be first thing in the morning. Any suggestions? Could there be a problem with condensation in the fuel tank ???
