EU to end 'block exemption' 29 Oct 2000 (News)
According to a story in today's 'Sunday Times' the EU Competition Commission under Mario Monti will refuse to renew manufacturer block exemption when it expires in September 2002. Block exemption is the restrictive practice whereby manufacturers determine who will sell their cars where. For the past 15 years, this has allowed local monopolies to be created, contolling the retail prices of new cars. Ending the system will mean an end to dealers being awarded an exclusive franchise to sell makes and models of cars within given areas, and will open the market to pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap supersites and internet sales. -

Last year’s runners up Bill Cleyndert and Dan Harrison in the 1928 Ford Model A won Class 4 (Vintage cars 1920-1930 over 2000cc), while Shane Houlihan and Richard Pain in the 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C won Class 5 (Vintageant cars 1931-1948 2001 to 3000cc). -
Group 5 monsters set for Goodwood Members’ Meeting 8 Jan 2016 (News)
The 74 th Goodwood Members’ Meeting in March will showcase some of the most iconic sports cars of all time – the mighty 5.0-litre Group 5 cars which raced from 1969-71. Under the regulations at the time, prototype racers were limited to 3.0-litre engines, but ‘production’ cars – of which at least 25 examples had to be built – were allowed to use 5.0-litre units. -

Although welcome, the rise follows a particularly poor February 2009, being the shortest month of the year, it's traditionally the weakest for car sales. Plus many buyers put off buying until the March registration plate change. It was 1.9 per cent lower than February 2008. The trend of small cars dominating the top 10 continues. The largest car in the Top 10 was the BMW 3-Series, while the largest cars from Vauxhall and Ford are the Astra and Focus. -
