  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 97 2.0 Jerky at low revs. 23 Jun 2009 (Forum)
It will also occasionally be hesitant when accelerating. It has had new plugs, distributor cap and rotor arm; the leads are about 3 years old. It feels more like a fuelling/metering fault. Any ideas?
  • Peugeot 607 (2000 - ) - 04 2.2 Getting the battery out 19 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Pal of mine is scratching his head over what seems to be a very simple problem. He has disconnected the battery leads and can't see any obvious clamping mechanism but the battery won't lift out of its housing. It seems to be a tight fit in the housing but something also appears to be holding it in place. Is he missing something?

  • Austin (Rover) Metro (1980 - 1990) - 90 1.3 removing petrol tank 26 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Has anyone any experience on removing the petrol tank from one of these cars? Looking underneath there appears to be one retaining bolt on the leading edge of the tank and any others hidden up under the rear suspension framework. It could potentially be an 'easy' job but I'm wondering if there are any hidden 'surprises'?
  • Jaguar S-Type (1999 - 2007) - 02 3.0 Sport V6 squeak on cold start up. 3 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Will this be fixed by just replacing the belt? If so is it a big job? mAny idea of cost. Is this just annoying or will it lead to other problems?
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - Juddering wiper blades 12 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I seem to remember in the 1960s curing juddering by twisting the wiper arm to ensure the blade orientation is trailing instead of leading in both directions.

  • Audi advert DT 12/7/06 13 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I was with somebody today who suddenley held up the Audi advert advert that appears on the first page of the Business Section of the Daily Telegraph, and commented that he thought that some readers will find it offensive. Without ' leading the witnessess' does anybody else hold this view? (Best viewed from a distance). I will explain later if anybody questions this. -- pmh (was peter)

  • miracle cure for black smoke on ebay? 26 Feb 2006 (Forum)
just seen this "miracle cure" for black smoke from diesels on ebay, its all very hush hush, which leads me to think its probably a rip off. However its got some pretty good feedback and its only a fiver. Anyone had any experience of this.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TRANSIT-RANGER-FREDA-ESCORT-DIESEL-BLACK-SMOKE_W0QQitemZ4615037114QQcategoryZ21654QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

  • General: how not to treat an autobox 20 Jun 2005 (Forum)
With permission, I quote from a contributor to the MB Club forum: "A friend who worked for Borg Warner in the 1980s told me this afternoon that the majority of factory rebuilds were due to people topping up with gear oil instead of transmission fluid. The resulting black goo tended to cause the valve block to become obstructed, leading to rough shifts etc." I wonder how much of this is still going on.
  • Odometer versus speedo 25 Apr 2005 (Forum)
In another topic it was mentioned that a speedo could have up to 10% error (ie 70 mph is actually 63 mph), but not the other way round. This leads me to think about how accurate are the odometers. Are these 100% accurate or do these have a built in error of reading like the speedo. Could this mean a 70,000 mile reading is actually only 63,000 miles?
  • Steer clear of Manchester 5 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Excuse me if someone has picked up on this already but I couldn't believe my eyes when I read it. I've just got around to reading HJ's agony column in Saturday's Telegraph and he leads with some clown from Manchester who says he limits the use of the indicators in his Saab because he doesn't like the clicking noise they make. You couldn't make it up...
