mercedes endurance record 26 Jul 2005 (Forum)
In one of the papers today there is a Mercedes advert. It desribes how an E-class equppied with the new 3.0 V6 diesel did 100 000 miles in 30 days running "day and night". By my maths that's 3333.33r miles per day, or an average of 138 miles per hour. Considering time for new drivers and fuel it must have been going faster. Would they have bothered changing the oil? -
Sunday's TV Racing British GP Thread 10 Jul 2005 (Forum)
I am DiYing today in order to spend tomorrow in front of the box without any hurtful comments about my apparant inactivity. Only annoyance is that the Moto Gp is not live, thay are running about an hour behind the race. A voluntary backroom agreement not to spill the beans by those with Eurosport is called for. Well done BBC, Laguna Seca is potentially the highlight of the bike season and we only get higlights. -
Oil change ot not? 5 Jul 2005 (Forum)
On HJ's FAQ section on the site regarding "running in a petrol engine". My Ford Ka has now covered 3k miles and I was gonna have the oil & filter changed @ 6k. In the FAQ section it says do not change the oil and filter until the first manufacturer recommended change point (which is 1 year or 12.5k miles). -
106 Diesel Glowplug Control Unit? 29 May 2005 (Forum)
106 Diesel had just been on a run, went to restart it and nothing happens when I turn the key apart from a ticking type of noise from the control unit near the radiator header tank. Engine doesn't turn over and lights on dash are very faint. -
Vx Omega Power loss 14 May 2005 (Forum)
Hi, Am i having probems or wot. 2.5 elite auto. When i accelerate hard the engine cuts out (down) and will not run clean unless i back off. Its ok normal driving up to 3/4 acceleration. The display reads "automatic gearbox". Ive done a blink test and number 19 comes up (incorrect RPM signal) but i think thats just a basic fault finding result. -
Terrano diesel lumpy tickover 21 Mar 2005 (Forum)
On a 1999 Terrano 2.7tdi automatic the tickover is erratic sometimes and at other times displays a "hysteresis" pattern (thrum thrum thrum like an old commercial diesel). however normal running is OK and fuel economy as normal. Car is regularly serviced so filters should not be clogged. Have tried Redex diesel in a tank of fuel without much success. Any ideas? Not too worried because I'm trading it in soon and the problem is probably not bad enough for dealer to notice. -
Braking problem - Nissan Almera 28 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Also when braking very heavily from 70 down to 50 the car swerves across the lane, sounds stupid but I dont know which way it swerved as I was too busy trying to correct it, it was quite severe. The car is running on good condition dunlop tyres with disc brakes front and rear. Anyone any ideas? -
EU Car Fines Crackdown 25 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Does that mean that we in the UK will get another "Stealth Tax" when our government can see a way of bleeding us dry again. Perhaps we shoud run a poll, which country will be the best / worst at collecting others fines? -
Red light offences 14 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Hi, Does anyone know the penalty should one be recorded running a red light at 58mph in a 40mph zone? I have not committed the above offence, but know of someone who has. Please don't reply with comments suggesting the offender "deserves all they get / should be shot / locked up", as I know they have made an idiotic error. -

Well guys I'm all spent for this year so I wish you a Very Happ and Prosperous New Year and may all your car problems be small ones. By all means come and post your best wishes in the discussion one as well should you wish. Happy new year! Hugo - BR Moderator -
Ace Cafe & Vincent Black Shadow 7 Nov 2004 (Forum)
The article states that the Vincent Black Shadow ('apocryphal tale), was the only bike that could do the run from the Ace Cafe to the Hanger Lane roundabout and back within the time taken to play a certain 45 rpm record, presumably on the juke box. 1. Any fact in this? 2. What was the record? 3. Is it true that they chained the plastic teaspoons? -
corsa auto box weird noise 25 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Hi all, my wife has a 1.4 16V P-Reg Auto Corsa. Normally runs fine except that when it changes from 3rd to 4th there is a slight hesitation as it changes (seems to change up really slowly), and occasionally there is a noise that sounds just like a big spring that lasts for about 1 second ( i guess it could be the teeth of the gears "just" touching as it changes or something!!) -
registered keeper 24 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I shall soon be starting a new job, and will commute by car - I currently commute by bus.SWMBO will need current car for family running around and I will buy a second car. Current car is registered and insured in my name, SWMBO has no NCD as had had no inurance for years in her name. My plan is to insure current car (Berlingo) in her name and insure commuting car in my name. -
Toyota Prius II 6 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I have just read HJ's report on the Prius II. Long term I want to move back to running an automatic but economical car to help cope with my drive to work (32 miles each way, 16 of them in heavyish traffic). Would a used Prius be a good long term car (10 years+) or would you end up scrapping it when some of the technology fails? -
Kipping in the car 11 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I guess they're young enough to cope with the discomfort (I've only done this once - many years ago), but I was wondering if they're likely to run into trouble with the 'boys in blue'. Does anyone know what the legal position is regarding sleeping overnight in a car - does it depend on where it is parked? Cheers. -
battery or alternator 23 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I have purchased an battery tester but I'm not sure what the readings should be. Can some one help a dimwit !!! Basically - did a long run this weekend, when arrived at destination - the battery was dead. I did have the heater, lights, wipers etc on and the vehicle in question is a Renault Trafic Van. Cheers -
Subaru Legacy Est. Opinions please 8 Aug 2004 (Forum)
A growing family has now led to the ultimate mid-life crisis, I think I need an estate car. I don't fancy any of the run o' the mill cars (regardless of their attributes) and am considering a new shape Legacy Tourer. I've seen 2.0 sport tourers, pre-reg, for around £15 grand. Anybody got one who can give an informed opinion? -
95 Volvo 440 rear lamp unit 8 Aug 2004 (Forum)
One problem is one of the rear lamp units. After it rains it mists up - presumably with rainwater running down the tailgate gutter and into the top of the unit somehow. Anybody got any experience of this particular problem? Can the lamp unit be resealed at the top with a standard mastic type product? -
Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-X 3 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Dear All, I am considering purchasing the 3.0l 1994 version of this vehicle. The motor is diesel and I am wondering about conversion to LPG (preferably to run alongside), is this feasible or do I need a petrol engine - I\'m guessing I do. Also, does anyone have any knowledge of JICC ( http://www.jicconline.co.uk ) - they seem reputable but I\'d be grateful of any first hand information anyone has. -
