  • Ford Fusion 2009 - Automatic "surges" Car a write off. 15 May 2016 (Forum)
I am not yet dotty, but in my seventies. I have driven automatics for twenty years after my left ankle was fixed to some extent with screws and I felt that ther was not enough flex in the ankle to control a clutch. Now I am negotiating for a used Nissan Note automatic and am quite worried.
  • Insurance - not automatically renewed 5 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I didn't really have time to go around looking for new quotes so happily went along with it - the letter said that unless I asked otherwise they would automatically renew the policy for me upon expiry. I thought nothing more of it. The expiry date was the 2nd (Sunday). I phoned them yesterday (3rd) to add a temporary driver for the day. The conversation went like this, after I had given my policy number: Them: "Sir, your policy expired yesterday" Me: "Isn't it supposed to automatically renew?"

  • headlight alignment mot fail? 6 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I am curious to know if incorrect headlight alignment is an automatic MOT fail in the UK? Here in southern Ireland the rules changed in the last couple of years deeming it an automatic fail, complete with all the hassle involved. i was also wondering what the average price in the UK is for headlight alignment on the beam setter at a garage?

  • CO2 Emissions 9 Jun 2003 (Forum)
CO2 emissions - measured in g/km - are higher from an automatic car than the manual version of the same car/engine. I assume therefore that the emissions are measured under load conditions. The automatic having to work harder to maintain a set speed because of the losses in the auto box and different gearing.

  • Volvo C70 MK1 - Changing automatic transmission fluid 5 Jan 2024 (Forum)
I have acquired a C70 convertible which I'll be using during the spring/summer, (have a Toyota Carina for the other seasons). My question relates to the automatic transmission fluid on the Volvo. The car is very smooth shifting, but there is no history of the fluid ever being changed. The car is nearly 20 years old. A famous American youtuber called Scotty Kilmer has said that changing transmission fluid on an old car when it's never been done before could lead to problems with the transmission shifting properly.
  • Vauxhall Astra GTC 2.0 CDTI Auto - Automatic Gearbox longevity/known problems 3 Sep 2019 (Forum)
Hello,  My 2014 astra gtc 2.0 cdti, has what i believe to be a six speed conventional automatic gearbox.  The car currently has around 48,000 miles, and has just had an auto box fluid change transfusion by a local garage.  Are there common problems with these boxes?
  • Ford Fiesta - 2004 Fiesta won’t change gear 30 Aug 2018 (Forum)
I’ve got an automatic 2004 Ford Fiesta... been working perfectly until taking it out one day and I got down the road and it was stuck in gear 1, I couldn’t use semi-automatic to get it up a gear, and it wasn’t changing on it’s own.
  • VW group (audi, skoda, seat, etc) - Automatic gearbox issue -y haven't they been fixed 13 Jan 2018 (Forum)
So someone posted this:-  "Avoid anything with an automated manual box too such as VAG’s DSG or Ford’s Powershift, they’re almost certain to be trouble in the longterm." So why haven't VW fixed these issues with their automatic gearboxes? They have had long enough, it's been going on for ages. It's the only thing that puts me off buying one of their cars. I am certain they have the expertize to do it & they certainly have the engineering talent to do it.
  • Honda CR-V vs Toyota RAV 4 diesel automatic 2 Nov 2017 (Forum)
Hello, am considering between used Honda CR-V 2.2 diesel or Toyota RAV 2.2 diesel, both automatic gear only, made circa 2010 under 70-80 k miles. Have heard about 2.2 Toyota diesel engine head gasket problems, but seems they were fixed after 2009. Any others left? Are Honda's diesels made circa 2010 reliable?
  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 29-07-2017 Part 2 7 Aug 2017 (Forum)
I'm not convinced by this "always left-foot-brake in automatics" notion. It may be fine and dandy if you never again have to drive a manual car, but if you do, your feet will be confused, your reactions slowed and the risk of an accident increased. And a lot of us drive both manuals and automatics.
