2000 Vaux Vectra ?Brake pads 22 Nov 2006 (Forum)
It takes an hour to drive to and fro work (although it's only 45 miles there) driving country roads with sharp coners and braking, makes me think that this is exacerbating the problems. -
too much oil...consequences of driving 2 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Now it takes a few turn s to start and there was a puff of black smoke.. He hasnt got any inspection ramps or anywhere to safely drain away the oil, is it safe to drive the car about 2 miles to the garage to have the oil changed, or will it cause damage..? -
Drive-in MOT 6 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Early today I went to my usual MOT garage (I've just realised that I have been going there on and off for nearly 40 years!) for a drive-in MOT. "Sorry gov, you'll need to make an appointment, now we are computerised" It seems that the testers have to allow an hour for each test and therefore they are not happy, because they are not able to carry out so many tests on a Saturday morning. -
BBC1 - Traffic Cops 2 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Right at the start of the programme one of the officers (Bob, I think his name was) was seen chasing a 'dizzy' (disqualified driver) driving an Astra. Did anyone else spot the officer wasn't wearing his seat belt during the pursuit, as well as loads of one handed driving because of having to operate his 2 way radio? Obviously driving one handed is commonplace as has been discussed before, but why no seatbelt? -
Wrong way along a motorway 17 Jun 2005 (Forum)
A man has just been imprisoned for 14 months for driving the wrong way along the M62 and M60 at speeds up to 110MPH. The police used a stinger to stop him but he did a U turn and drove on on his wheel rims. What on earth leads a man to deliberately drive like that? -
fiat punto drive shaft removal 9 Jun 2005 (Forum)
ive bought a drive shaft for my 1.2 1998 punto.if i take the old one back (the same as the new one)ill get back £25. the problem is the new one has the cup fitted that goes into the gearbox.in the haynes manual there is no mention of removing the cup from the gearbox.i would like to remove the cup but cant work out how to. i could just cut the tie on the boot to remove the tripod joint, but the new one is the complete unit into the gearbox. thanks -
Reversing cold 1 May 2005 (Forum)
A friend of mine once told me that the gearbox can wear out quickly if you where to reverse out of your driveway first thing in the morning due to its coponents not being designed to do this when cold. Have any of you backroomers heard of this before? I dont make a habit of this because i drive straight onto the road outside our house & i always reverse into parking spaces as my instructor taught me. :) -- Its not what you drive, its how you drive it! :-) -
Ooops -- sorry. 12 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Yesterday, driving on a day when my judgement may not have been all that it should be (what's new, asks Lady Stripey), I made a bit of a Horlicks of taking a roundabout and slightly incommoded another driver. It was indifferent driving on my part, and I was totally in the wrong. -
Buying advice - a 4 wheel drive for ... 28 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Folks, We need a little advice. We are looking a for a small diesel 4 wheel drive car for commuting that will be cheap to run and will get us to work in the harsh winter here in north east Scotland. We don?t really want to spend a lot of money but rather than give a budget we just want to hear ideas. -

Bad driving in the wet 9 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Here we are again, lashings of rain on the M6 today all the cars are slowing except a huge artic who was going faster than everyone else, then woke up, luckily we all missed. I now think driving on a wet skid pan should be part of the test, so many people think their car is still going to grip like glue on greasy wet roads. Please slow down before you hit my nice shiney little car and kill yourself. -
4 Wheel drive (cars) 30 Apr 2001 (Forum)
I'd be interested in hearing views on the merits (?) of 4 wheel drive as fitted to road cars (not off-roaders). Typically Quattro with Audis. Presumably there is a loss of accelaration and fuel efficiency? ...more drag, two gearboxes. Also given typical UK weather is rarely extreme, and roads are fairly good, are there really and benefits if you're using the car as your everyday transport? -

Leaning into a bend 14 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Why do so many car drivers lean their body into a bend, instead of remaining upright? If they were driving a two-wheeler I could understand it, but not when they are driving a car. -- L\'escargot by name, but not by nature. -
