• ?Fuel starvation on BMW 5 Series 8 Oct 2001 (Forum)
  Have taken out and cleaned all six plugs, all looked OK, so seems like a fuel system problem. Is there an inertia switch somewhere and if so how do I re-set it? HJ's book mentions fuel pump relay problems in several places, where do I find it (the relay not the book)?

    Best advice is to fill before you get on the ferry and top up as you go in France wherever you can find fuel on your journey. Diesel is the first fuel to run out at fuel stations, about 70% of cars are diesel over here. UL95 seems to be more readily available The shortages have been worse in the north and north-west but are spreading south.

  So I obtained a similar (originally I thought identical) engine from a 2004 Combo C van and swapped them over. Now there is no fuel pressure and in fact no power to the fuel pump. Both engines have a 6 way connector (only four ways are used) that  inludes a blue/red wire that carries 12v to the fuel pump. But the two engines have a different style of connector, so are not directly interchangeable.

  Having had a blocked fuel filter within 5000 miles from new and with my car now on 11000 miles, I am concerned that with colder weather, I will again experience what is apparently "clouding" of the diesel fuel and blockage of the fuel filter.

  I have noticed over the past few months that my fuel economy has dropped from a consistent 36 - 38mpg (mixed town and motorway) down to just 30mpg. I used to achieve well over 40mpg on a pure motorway run but can't get above 32mpg currently. I believe the problem is due to 1 of the fuel injectors.

  This post is about ageing fuel in car fuel tanks. Petrol and diesel. (I touched on this a while back) I was just reflecting on it. Arrived home from France early July, the remaining diesel from Calais then lasted a few weeks. Refueled and weeks later still have a 2/3 tank of derv left.

  After flattening the battery, I left it on charge overnight. This morning, after similar rather disappointing splutterings, I decided connect a plastic fuel tank I have directly into the fuel pump, the tank balancing rather precariously on the engine. With fuel now flowing into the pump under gravity, the engine at last fired and ran! Great I thought - progress at last.

  My Hornet 600 only gets used for about two thirds of the year, and having owned it from new in 1998 I am by now very conversant with putting it to bed for the winter with whatever fuel happens to be in the tank. Come the spring, and with battery having been kept charged with an Optimate, it's just a matter of cranking the engine for a few seconds until the float chambers fill, then off we go to the fuel station to tank up and thereby dilute the old fuel.

  In normal use the engine ran fine, but when a high fuel delivery was required the clump of fibres was sucked up the pipe to a union angle turn and reduced the flow. When fuel usage dropped so did the blockage and the engine returned to normal. My supposition is it is fuel starvation, possibly similar to my example.

  Seem to have an issue with the fuel tank swelling up - can this be reversed. The bolt holes for the front cowl don't line up anymore. Is there a sealer that can be applied inside the tank to prevent this?

  The Chancellor George Osborne today confirmed in his Autumn Statement that the planned 3p Fuel Duty rise in January 2012 has been scrapped and the August 2012 rise has been reduced from 5p to 3p.

  Fuel filler neck pipe is broken and garage say no new spares available. They can patch with rubber solution but it will not pass MOT. Where to get S/H item from?. TKS

  I have just bought a Rover 420 GSI petrol (1996) on a p plate. Unfortunately there is no documentation to suggest the fuel filter has been changed. Is there any advice on changing it, does and don't etc. Cheers

  Do "in between change" oil additives have any real benefits? Is there any evidence whether different brands of fuels are of varying quality? I would particularly like to find some objective independent test results.

• Renault Clio - Fuel gauge incorrect 28 Aug 2022 (Forum)
  Checked the fuel gauge and it's still reading what it was when I pulled into the filling station. On the trip computer, the amount is reducing since filling up on Thursday and the miles to empty is reducing, so it seems to be remembering the information in the fuel tank before filling up on Thursday.
