  • Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - 04 1.4 TDCi Engine Swap 9 Jul 2023 (Forum)
A new radiator and heat exchanger later, I figured we were ready to go, not at all, now the engine management light is on and it will not turn over more than 3 times then it stops. Somebody told me they are not the same, and i'll need a later ECU to run it, is there any end to it,can we not work on our cars any more, I would welcome any suggestions, thanks
  • Mazda 2 - What is the point of keyless start? 19 Dec 2022 (Forum)
Yesterday I backed my wife’s Mazda 2 out of the garage as she was late leaving for work. The engine, push button start with keyless start, was still running when she jumped into the driver’s seat and drove off. 20 minutes later she rang me saying there was a red warning light on the dash in the shape of a key. I suddenly realised that I still had her car key in my pocket!!
  • Mazda 3 2.2 Sport Nav '17 - Mazda 3 2.2 Skyactiv Diesel Facelift issues 27 Apr 2022 (Forum)
It seems they used to be very problematic with dumping fuel into the oil, DPF blocking, EGR valves etc... a lot of the forums I've read tend to talk about pre 2017 models; making me unsure if these issues are still present in the facelift model. I live in Bristol where I do quite a bit of stop start but a good 1.5 hr run at least once a fortnight to south wales. Coming from a 3.0 I6 B58 BMW engine, I really didn't want a slow petrol... I like the idea of having a diesel for the torque, economy and low RPM on long runs.
  • Ford Kuga 1.6 Ecoboost 180:bhp Titanium X - Broken Spark Plug Destroys Engine 1 Feb 2022 (Forum)
Very low mileage  car for year. The engine started making a knocking sound after a long run. No warning lights, engine didn’t seem to be running rough apart from the knocking. Sounded like camshaft. Pulled over immediately and switched off engine. Did not drive it again RAC engineer suspected camshaft.
  • Reliably cheap 29 Jan 2021 (Forum)
My thoughts are on buying a reliable but cheap to run car thanks to a request from a friend. Here’s an example of one of my favourite small cars. It’s a 2019 Hyundai i10 and assuming it has a full dealer history it has a manufacturer warranty until 2024 so there’s no repair costs beyond normal servicing and thus little risk.
  • SU carb problem - Triumph Bonneville 11 May 2020 (Forum)
I should also mention that I've had the bike garaged for a few years, and I filled up with LRP (instead of leaded petrol) for the first time ever just before I took it out on this run - I mention this just in case LRP might make a difference to something inside the carb. So my questions really are: 1. If I strip it down, what should I be looking for? 2. What else might be the problem?
  • Toyota Yarisl - Something a bit bigger and faster 15 Jan 2020 (Forum)
My. 1.33 2010 Yaris is doing very well, it never stops and is ultra reliable and cheap to run. My commute is about to grow from 30 miles a day to around 45 miles so I feel like something a bit bigger and faster maybe on the cards. Looking in the South West mostly.   My budget is up to 7k including around 2k I can get for the Yaris.
  • Susuki Vitara - Is there a recall or am I being fibbed to? 15 May 2019 (Forum)
I can’t find anything online about a recall affecting new Vitaras and I feel like the dealer is spinning me a line. They said they could take my existing car off the road to avoid me having to MOT, and give me a run around to use until the new car comes in - whenever that is. Am I being played for a fool here? Anyone know of any recall, or what I should do please?
  • Dacia Sandero - Parking charge 19 Mar 2019 (Forum)
On the day in question I had gone into Lincoln but did not park anywhere at any time - I had taken my wife into town & dropped her off opposite Lincoln rail station on a road called St Mary's Street where there is a taxi rank, which at the time was virtually empty & was stopped for maybe 50 seconds just to allow her to get out of the car - I did not get out & engine was running & drove away immediately she shut the door. ( St Mary's street is the street that runs alongside the station - but I did not at any time enter the stations parking area, even to drive through).
  • BMW 3 Series Touring - Estate with 2 Dogs & High Mileage - What to do? 24 Feb 2019 (Forum)
I've also got other people suggesting looking at VW and then the lingering thought in the back of my head that is saying would hybrid be a better option offsetting the higher purchasing cost with lower running costs (our mileage probably takes it out of the possible options though as I can't see many hybrids at present actually being cost effective over these types of distances).  Obviously it doesn't have to be an estate either as an SUV would also be an option but again, I believe all of these would be rejected due to the running costs associated with them and ideally we wouldn't want an MPV.
  • SEAT Toledo - Strange Electrical Problem 1.6 TDI 11 Feb 2019 (Forum)
The car is serviced annually, currently has around 55k on the clock  and had a new battery around 6 months ago as the old one simply gave up and refused to charge. The problem... The car will start fine but while the engine is running (it can be under load or idling) I can hear a "click" sound and at the same time, all the electrics loose power for a split second and very shortly afterwards, if the engine is idling, the rpm will drop by around 200 again, just for a split second.
  • mitsubishi shogun pinin GDI - failed emissions mitsubishi shogun pinin GDI 6 May 2018 (Forum)
Tried usual stuff, air filter, lambda sensor, new plugs but think theres a more fundamental problem. It runs perfectly well, idles smooth and mpg on the readout is 30+.  keep reading thoiugh that the GDI engine is prone to carbon build up. Looked in the throttle body which actually seems pretty clean. can see some build up lower down, maybe 4 or 5 mm build up. would this build up throughout the whole inlet manifold cause the emissions failure given that its running perfectly..
  • Ford Fiesta 1.4 2002 - New Serpentine Belt Now Fiesta Will Not Start 27 Mar 2018 (Forum)
Since then i have not been able to start the car using the battery which is 1 year old. However, it will start with a jump start from my partner's Fiesta with her engine running. When i fitted the serp belt the pulleys turned freely enough. The battery shows 12.8v when tested with my multimeter and 14v when engine is running.  Can a new belt be too tight for the battery to start?

  • Vauxhall Zafira B - Vauxhall Zafira co2 emissions fail 5 Sep 2017 (Forum)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Also in terms of emmissions MOT test centre said it shoots up to 2% then after running drops to 0.34% then fluctuates up and down from there, but never lower then the 0.2% needed.) Thanks John.
  • Jaguar X-Type 2.0d 2004 170k miles - Car UNDER heating 9 May 2017 (Forum)
(Would still be plenty of air flow from the vent below 'bumper' level). Car definitely runs better and better mpg in hot temperatures. Thoughts, please?
  • All - automatic transmissions 18 Jan 2017 (Forum)
Iv been driving automatics for decades so had my share of problems but learned early that the fuid does not last for ever ,a lot of people seem to think it does , As far back as the 60s a service did not include changing the fluid and these days its still not part of the service as units are either sealed for life or as the manufactures say, or in the case of renault when it breaks and we fit another unit it will have fresh fluid , Transmission fluid should be changed at or before 30,000 miles ,yes your going to say but its fully synthetic and there is no mention in the hand book about that ,point is if you change the fluid or better still flush it you get most of the muck out that blocks up the valve body and the screen filter inside , the majority of todays automatics dont have dip sticks they have level tubes up inside the drain plug that have to be taken out just to drain them ,and you need to drain them from hot  put the level tube back in and then find the fill plug and with the engine running  in neutral and at appx 60 deg pour the fluid in untill the fluid starts to run out of the drain / level hole , thats if you dont have to take the pan off ,some dont have drain plugs ,its messy and you do have to know what you are doing but if you dont know what your doing get the dealers to do it for you your transmission will last a lot longer !
  • Pug 307 2.0l 110bhp "01 - Hdi 2.0l not starting air in fuel lines 14 Nov 2016 (Forum)

  • Peugot 206 - Lights turn themselves on at random (not Auto!) 7 Jan 2016 (Forum)
When the driver's door is opened, even with the lights off, there is a two-tone warning sound which I think is the lights-on warning, and the battery runs down over a period of days, suggesting something is ON, though nothing seems to be. When the ignition key is turned after the car has been idle, the dash display shows "ECO-MOD" which is the annoying mode it goes into to save battery power if you try to use the radio for more than 20 minutes without running the engine!
  • Selling 'unique' DMW'. 1 Dec 2015 (Forum)
It’s got two rear sprockets bolted together, but I can’t see the point as it would be impossible to run a chain on the smaller due to it being against the larger. The front also has Royal Enfield forks and wheel. The engine’s a pre ’63 Tiger cub unit, although the carb's a 1930s Amal.
