  • Nissan Primera III - Sudden power loss 16 Dec 2011 (Forum)
Hi all, I just wanted to report a fix for the sudden loss of power problem, you know the thing, your driving along and suddenly the car losses power it still works but it's almost as if the car has gone into a "limp home" mode, switching the engine on and off "solves" the problem, for a time anyway, Nissan wanted £1,200! for a new fuel pump, but  the culprit  (in my case) is a fuel flow regulator valve, fixed by my mechanic for £50.

  • Carburated petrol engines - Cold starting additive/petrol octane 29 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Hello all, Couple of quick questions!  - Is there a fuel additive that will help engines start in colder weather?  'Dry fuel' doesn't make much difference. I remember reading about acetone on here a long time ago, reckon that would be any use?

  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.6 heat shield falling off 23 Mar 2009 (Forum)

  • Volvo V70/XC70 (2000 - 2007) - 06 2.4 Engine cutting out 1 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Car parked on sloping drive facing downhill when engine just cut out. Recovery man simply wheeled car onto level bled the fuel line and off we went. He claims that he had a number of such incidents and it was to do with the low fuel level ( there was 22litres in the tank)and the car on an incline which caused the engine to gulp air.
  • Filling up when the tank is still half full 15 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Because I'm obsessively cautious I normally fill up when the gauge gets down to half full. However, it recently occured to me that this meant that I was never getting a full tank of fresh fuel and that a proportion of the tank's contents will now be 5 years old. What effect, if any, will the practice of filling up like this have? (Ignore the fact that for a lot of the time I'm carrying around more weight/mass of fuel than is strictly necessary.)

  • Ford Mondeo IV (2007 - ) - Diesel recommendations in the owner's manual 5 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I was browsing the owner's manual for the new Mondeo (like you do), and came across the fuel recommendations. It was surprisingly open, saying that any diesel that meets the EN590 standard is fine. Also 5% biodiesel is fine too. I would have thought after all the hoo-ha from dealers about "quality fuels" for the latest-generation common-rail motors, the manual would be more specific than that.

  • MG - 1974 1275cc. Midget - Hard brake pedal 21 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I have a 1974 midget 1275 in my garage that I have not driven for 7 years. It has just been left and not started. Yesterday I replaced the battery and put some fuel into the empty fuel tank and it fired up straight away after it chugged for a bit. The brake pedal is as hard as a rock. What kind of work will be required to get the brakes working again for an mot.
  • Filling jerrycans with petrol 20 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Now, can I refill a jerry can in a petrol station? Or it is illegal? If yes, then what's the option to carry extra fuel? And once the petrol is in jerry can, how do I pour it into the petrol tank? I don't think a normal funnel will allow me to pour petrol in car's tank (because of the stopper on mouth of fuel tank).
