Bangernomics 6 Aug 2007 (Forum)
She sometimes has to do the nightshift as she is a doctor, so i wouldn't mind an old car being left in the station overnight. The question is what banger? I would like to spend between 500 to 1000 pounds I have seen a 1995 volvo 440 1.8 for 500 quid, are thses ok? I was thinking something japanese or a volvo. -
How common is sump plug thread damage ? 26 Jun 2007 (Forum)
He told me he was going to try to get it in, but he was not certain it would work - and if it didn't, the car would need a new sump - which he didn't have in stock. Anyway, he got it in, but told me next time the oil is changed, the car will need a new sump. How common is this sort of damage? I was surprised to hear of it on a fairly new vehicle. -
Clio problems 29 Mar 2007 (Forum)
They noticed that the anti roll bar nuts/bolts had worn off and one of the anti roll bars was loose. I took it to a garage to have these repaired but the car is still making the rattling noise. I'm a bit worried something is about to fall off somewhere! Please does anyone have any advice on what the problem might be? It's an automatic car if that makes any difference. -
VW Golf - water in the oil tank 6 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Or is it more complicated than that (i.e. it's a garage job)? Any helpful advice would be gratefully received. The car is a 10 year old Golf {added to subject header, as per one of the sticky requests at the top of the page - DD} . Many thanks in advance. -
Lost BMW Service Book - replacing? 19 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I have just purchased a 3 yr old BMW from a non-franchised dealer advertised with full BMWSH. When I asked to see the paperwork he produced a number of copies of BMW receipts for every service and this shows the car has indeed been well maintained by a main dealer. -
Honda Smiles - Sort of! 19 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Took it to Alan Day at Winchester and they did the test while I waited then came back and told me what I thought. Quote for parts was £2600 + Fitting, now on a 13 year old car with 182k on the clock obviously we wont be buying them. But what did impress me was the fact the guy did not charge for the diagnostic, maybe he knew he has just written a car off, but fair play, I was expecting to pay £40 and all he ended up charging me for was £4 for some touch up paint for my Accord. -
Towing trolley 6 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Not really a technical matter, but I noticed an AA recovery vehicle using a towing mechanism which was basically a triangular trailer frame, with two wheels, an axle and then two holes for two car wheels to sit in-between the wheels of the towing 'trolley'. The towed vehicle is driven/roled/pulled onto the holes and the front wheels strapped down. This means the car can be towed, with its front wheel off the ground, and rear wheels rolling on the tarmac. -
2003 Ibiza probs 24 Sep 2006 (Forum)
The first thing is that if the engine is under any load at less than 2000 rpm it sounds as though the fan belt slipping. This goes away if you switch the air con on- but surely the fan belt wouldn't slip at 3 yrs old and less than 30000 miles would it? The second thing is if you leave the car locked for any length of time and then unlock it, as soon as you open the drivers door theres an electrical whirring noise that seems to come from under the car somewhere for about 2 seconds. -
Patience is a virtue 10 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I'm buying a 4 month old, few miles on the clock one. Course now I'm a little disappointed signed the paperwork and paid £200 deposit. This sounds too good to be true! Of course being the honest sort of girl that I am rang my dealer and told him and he said too late the car is on its way. -
Wrong tyres on Mondeo V6 18 Jul 2006 (Forum)
This results in cracking around the inside wall, a blow-out and a shredded tyre. I'm not a boy racer - I'm 37 yrs old with grey hair!! The guy that I've been buying the tyres from ("well mate, you obviously keep hitting kerbs, or parking on building sites.") has said he only replicated what was on the car when I first brought it to him. -

New CRV 21 Feb 2006 (Forum)
My current CRV is now 30 months old and I fancy a new one, it's been an excellent car except for, as an only car it's a little bit thirsty for everyday running around. Honda now do the diesel CRV which gets good write-ups and at the moment they have a "free" upgrade ie buy the petrol SE and we'll give you the diesel?? -
Product placement in films 24 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I had the dubious pleasure at the weekend of watching the films 'The Cat in the Hat' and 'Thunderbirds' (don't ask). I was amazed at the amount of Ford cars and logos appearing in both these films. Thunderbirds featured the Ford T'bird based pink FAB1 car, as well as loads of 4x4's and (i think) Fiestas, all with Ford stickers and badges on display. The Cat in the Hat featured a yellow T'bird and scores of old shape Focus's (Foci?) -
Overdue service on Mazda6 8 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Bought a Mazda6 TS 2.0 petrol at auction with 15,000mls and found that the 12,500 mile service hadn't been carried out - no oil or filter change! Oil wasn't low, just dirty. Car seems fine and obviously hasn't been thrashed (hardly any disc wear, interior in good nick, and alloys unkerbed). Is this serious? Dealer says related parts of my warranty will be affected. Heard Mazda engines are tough as old boots! -
Renault Espace IV battery going flat 6 Jan 2006 (Forum)
The battery (French make Dauphin) keeps going flat on my 2003 new shape Espace. There are no interior lights on. I can trickle charge it no problem and the car starts fine for a few days, then the battery goes flat after a couple of days. I have tried to jump start it with no success when the battery is dead. The battery is 2 1/2 years old, is it likely to have failed? -
m reg rover 414 sli rear shocks 21 Dec 2005 (Forum)

Q Fun 28 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The next car would need to cost less than this, combining depreciation (if any) and maintenance. Am open to any ideas, but here are desires: Powerful, say minimum 200bhp Rear wheel drive Some luxury/toys, e.g. leather, climate, cruise 6+ cylinders Reasonable reliability record Nothing liable to bankrupt me, e.g. old 7-series Discreet and able to surprise Civic Type-R owners! -
Renault Clio Exploding Airbag 21 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Renault are being very obstinate despite the car being under warranty and will not do the work which has been estimated at approx. £1300. They maintain that my friend must have had an accident, which he did not. There is no damage on the car whatsoever. -
Radio traffic reports 27 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I have long thought that radio traffic reports were a good way to find out why the jam you are in occurred. And now proof. M1 southbound 12:16 today about 5 miles from M25 junction. Two car smack outside lane opposite carriageway. Cars in outside land and people milling about in the central reservation. Two inside lanes and hard shoulder looks clear. Had a recently happened look about it. -
Growing consumer debt 6 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Apparently consumer borrowing in the UK is growing by £1m every four minutes - much of borrowed to spend on cars. This item reminded of an incident recently when I was selling a Mercedes (a W202). The buyer was organising a loan to buy the car. He also wanted to put a 'cherished number' on it so I helped him sort out the DoT paperwork.
