Can I get a contribution from the seller of my ex-fleet BMW 520d towards replacement parts? 15 Aug 2010 (Ask HJ)
I bought a BMW 520d as an ex-fleet car with 96,000 miles. I have done less than 1000 miles, but I had to change all brake pads and all four discs because... -
Peugeot 309 (1986 - 1993) - Advice on buying an older diesel. 25 Oct 2008 (Forum)
I took it for a test drive and it seemed solid enough (don't have any experience of driving old diesels) though it might need new brakes (I only have modern car brakes to compare it to). The car itself was in really good condition considering its age, it's had 3 owners, original car guide and service history all there (though just stamps, no details). -
Pulling back in after overtaking 24 Aug 2007 (Forum)
(b) Now, if the overtaken car doesn't adjust his speed it will take a further 15 seconds before he is back to a TWO second gap. (c) If the overtaken car brakes so he is doing 60mph it will take a further 3 seconds before he is back to a TWO second gap. Food for thought, no? My conclusions are that (a) if someone cuts in on you then you need to brake quite hard, and (b) if you want to overtake you really need to be going significantly faster than the car you want to overtake. -

protecting new car 23 Jan 2006 (Forum)
There's one thing I already noticed today, which was pretty much the first time I saw the car in daylight since collecting it from the dealership, and that is that the brake discs visible through the alloys are quite rusty. Is that just because they've never been used and will it be cleared off by the friction of the brakes as they get used? I've never really had a car before with brake discs are quite so visible through the alloys, so if an amount of rust is normal, even when new, then I guess that's fine. -

Private Sale - Let Seller Beware? 21 May 2004 (Forum)
Even worse, I've unknowingly committed an offence under Road Traffic Act 1998 in that it is illegal to sell a car with faults in brakes, tyres, exhaust, lights etc and max fine is £5000!!! Of course, the list of faults on my ex-cars inspection included headlight reflectors, exhaust, tyres and brake problems. Exactly those that make the car 'unroadworthy'. -
Could Have Been An Expensive Blunder 12 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Sure you're all well aware Polo's been for his MOT today. They just phoned and said there's 1000 miles left on the brakes (funny that - 10,000 miles ago they told me there were only 3000 miles left on them, when they'd only been on a month and were actually fine) and that the rear exhaust box had gone. Quoted me £111 to do the brakes and £171 to do rear and middle exhaust. -
'97 Pug 306 XSI 16v Problems... 4 Nov 2003 (Forum)
The first one is pretty obvious what the fault is but I was wondering if anyone else had the problem? basically the front brakes squeak like mad, and under hard braking they sort of whine/rub. The brakes were checked (by previous owner - I have receipt) at a garage last month, cleaned, and reported that they were OK, but the noise is still there. -

the front tyres on my VW Tiguan 4Motion suv need changing, but can I get away with just renewing the front two or should I replace all four? -
running in, please pass 15 Jun 2022 (Forum)
do you really need to treat a brand new car with kid gloves anymore? Run the engine below 4000 rpm for first 1000 miles and no heavy braking for first 500 so you can bed in the brakes? Now I drive plenty of new cars with less than 1000 miles on the clock and I treat them the same as any other. I make no provision whatsoever for it being new. -

Kia Sportage 1.6GDI manual - Fuel consumption. 24 Jul 2020 (Forum)
One little glitch that I think was my fault, Cruise control would not switch off pressing the brake pedal but did with the button and a gentle bit of handbrake. But in no danger as i always switch it off approaching traffic. Have not been able to replicate it, but searched online and found one single post 4 years ago on a Kia forum. seems my size 12's might have been pressing throttle AND brake pedals at the same time. -

any - Elk (well medium sized Deer) test 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
All good, Deer lives on unharmed, but i was quite impressed at how the motor took the swerve, which was instant reaction harsh, no possible time to brake so i didn't brake which probably helped a lot, it did occur to me had i been going much faster it could have worked out rather differently. Apart from i like wildlife was glad there was no damage either, saw the deer go back into the same hedge out of the corner of my eye as i went past, maybe he had a bigger shock than me :-) -
Hyundai i30 petrol - Great car except for..... 15 Jun 2019 (Forum)
Two things stand out that disappoint though: the radio only operates for 2 minutes after the engine is switched off which is very inconvenient when I'm waiting for my daughter to finish her piano lesson! And the 'Auto Hold' brake function has to be enabled manually for every journey which is a pain as the parking brake is electronic and my wife forgets to set it at start up. On another note, I traded in a diesel car for the Hyundai as I don't do the miles for a DPF to function effectively.
