• Renault Espace - Failed repair to alternator 14 Apr 2012 (Forum)
  I rang breakdown insurers who arranged for car to be mended at nearest local Renault garage in Paris. They said both the alternator and battery needed to be replaced. This took 5 days and meant we had to use hire car and book 1 night extra on our holiday. When we returned to UK we visited the garage (in Yorkshire) who told us they wouldn't give a refund as we should have had car towed back to them!

    I had to remove the radio face and iPhone charger last night.  When I get home from work (I dont use the car for work) I am expecting the battery to be flat. Has anyone ever seen anything like this? Cheers in advance

  I have had the heater control valve replaced (as it had been bypassed when I bought it for unknown reasons), new thermostat, new injector leak off pipes, new cabin filter and a new battery. The car has had the coolant system flushed, but the heaters still wont work properly. I am now getting heat out of the heaters (as opposed to previously only getting cold air) but only when it feels like it.

  Changes / replacements made include (all new)Glow Plugs / Fuel Filter 3 times / fuel Pump / 507.1 oil / Intercooler /Battery /crankshaft sensor / Shell diesel / clean inlet manifold / double check all seals / serviced reg... I generally do 90 miles of motorway driving a day, without a blip, averaging 50mpg overall.

  To me it seems to be some sort of fuel supply issue- the engine turns rapidly so I don't think it's the battery though I haven't checked voltage as yet. The starting problem seems to be worst if the car has stood overnight which makes me wonder if air is getting into the system somewhere and the fuel slipping all the way back into the tank.

  In the 2 years I've owned it I've replaced: gearbox, window motors, all fuses x8, shock absorbers - all of them - twice, battery x2 (not with cheap ones either), complete brake system x2, all bulbs at least three times each, and now today I've had the AA out AGAIN because the camshaft sensor is broken. It never starts first time from cold, although it generally starts second time after leaving it for 10 secs, in very cold weather it cuts out when I put the clutch in for the first 1/4 mile or so too - I've been told this is either a faulty sensor somewhere buried deep in the engine?

    When this happens there is no spark at the plugs (lately it has got so bad that sometimes the battery will go flat and I have to jump start it).  The crank case sensor, plugs and leads have all been changed and had no effect.  Last week an auto electrician examined the car and said he thought it was the ECU, only problem is that the ECU is part no.

  it's been 3 wks now, car was fine then one morning went to open car with remote & nothing, changed battery, re-programed remote fob, still nothing, on unlocking car manually found boot won't open, everything else opens except boot which should open manually when you unlock. Had to go in through backseat to open boot, checked  boot wiring, fuses, all ok.

  2nd call dec 2010 - Advised AA to tow to garage without start from ford garage so they could see if any fault codes came up, no fault we detected and they couldnt fine any other problems, they thought it was frozen fuel so they checked fuel lines and replaced the battery, Today - called AA out and being towed to garage as we speak, i know its not frozen fuel in this weather. any help would be great as i cant drive it anywhere without the worry of it cutting out

  Hi all, newbie here, was recommended to this site by a workmate, said you would be able to sort me out :-) My immobiliser is stuck on, does not respond to the "zapper" , have changed the battery, but still no go. Have spoken to a helpful techie at my nearest Toyota dealer ( over 20 miles away) My options are ( if i can somehow get car towed or transported over there) 1: Have "zapper" unit re-programmed, if still dead, 2: Have ECU in car re-programmed. 3: If above fails, have all wiring associated with immobiliser removed, but noted that they do not have wiring diagrams, so would have to be traced through.

  I've checked the timing, I've made sure fuel is getting to the pump, I've run a wire from the starter solenoid to the battery and the engine turns over but does not start, I've opened the fuel injector pipes to let air out of the system, so far nothing. I even looked for the fuel cut-off switch mentioned on petrol cars but there isn't one.

  I've assumed that the distributor hall sensor is not broken as the engine re-started the next day when I replaced the rotor arm, have I assumed wrong? Here is the AA man's report ("Static battery 12.3 V, engine cranks ok, no spark from HT lead & coil checked feed in/out coil. checked camshaft turning - no switching from coil or hall sensor. cheched feed & earth - ok")

  Ive done# Coil Pack x2 Spark Plugs x 2 Temp Sensor (Needed doing anyway) Air Filter Fuel Filter HT Leads x 2 Taken Voltage from Battery seems ok Taken to Ford for a scan no codes they just updated my ECU software?? Cleaned the idle control valve The problem is this when I stop at lights/junctions the engine vibrates, sometimes the whole car.

  the cold weather made my 306 harder and harder to start, then it wouldnt even turn over. Tried jump leads, didnt even start, so got a new battery to make sure it had the right juice. It started. The next day, it wouldnt start again. Jump start, it wouldnt start, eventully it did, turn it off and it d start. thee next day it would nt start. Anway, ive changed the cam shaft sensor, the relay behind the ecu, and the coil pack. there is no spark at the spark plugs but it does turn over. too add to this, ive read a few things on the forums, sometime, which is random if i take some of the key fuses out then put them back in and try again it starts, and runs fine. then reverts back to the not starting state again the next day.

  There are no warning lights on the dash while I'm cranking, the glow plug light comes on and goes off as before and plugs have been tested with a continuity meter and checks out fine and no unburnt fuel traces are eminating from the tailpipe, so I think this must be some kind of fuelling issue. I've drained the battery numerous times trying to get the car to start. Any help greatly appreciated!

    A temporary fix was a squirt of WD40, but I then had a new belt put on (proper Daihatsu part) as the sound quickly came back.  All was well for about a month.  Recently, the belt has started squeaking when the battery is under load (especially when engine cold and the lights are on).  As revs increase, the sound disappears. Above all else, the loud noise is annoying and embarrassing.  I can't get through to the garage which did the work.

  Booked it into a garage  but really strugggled to start it that day -after maybe 8 or more efforts the battery ran down, so needed to bel jump-started. The Renault Dealership in Luxembourg (we moved here 3 months back) diagnosed it as needing 4 new INJECTORS (full set) and bits that go with them for 1900 Euros !

  Driving home as usual, when battery warning light came on. 1/2 mile later engine management warning light, then immediately after that , the  "terminal" engine warning light.  I was on a busy red-route approaching a roundabout  and could not pull over safely, so I nursed it another 400 yrds to an exit and stopped in a driveway.

  HI, if anyone can help id be really grateful. I have had an intermittent starting problem with my megane. The battery is fairly new but when turning the ignition, absolutely nothing on occasions. Turning on and off the keyfob two or three times would sometimes rectify the problem and car would start,  sometimes it wouldnt start but would be fine if left until the next day or two.....now it just wont do anything at all.

  I changed the battery recently on my 2001 Sharan and noticed shortly afterwards that the Aircon was not working. It was a hot day and we tried switching the aircon on but didn't get any cold air. Later I noticed that when the ignition was switched on the climate control panel flashed for about 15 seconds, which the car book says indicates a malfunction.
