  Hi all - anyone have any experience with towing with Merc's CVT auto box as in the A180CDI? I feel it probably isn;t advisable, but all the books and data suggest the opposite. Braked towing limit of 1500kg is stated, and my caravan is around 1000kg.

  The police tell me this is illegal and will invalidate the insurance on the tow-car as well. Therefore if I want to tow my old SIII Landy to a garage for repair work, prior to an MOT, can I just get a short term third party insurance cover and nothing else? Obviously I cannot get a tax disk prior to a successful MOT, and what if the garage where I'm having the repair work carried out is not an MOT centre?

  What is the law on these? I thought the vehicle had to be stationary to use them but i am often very distracted by tow trucks including AA towing on the motorway with the lights flashing for no good reason that I can see. THey are moving at least as fast as a caravan so why the need to have them flashing. When stationary obviously they are useful.

  I ask only because I'm interested... Why does there seem to be a presumption against towing with automatics? I regularly tow a horse & trailer (total about 1.75 tonne), previously with an auto Rangey classic, and now with my X5. I've never had a problem, but when I tell people, I get the pursed lips and shaking head treatment.

  I currently own a ford sierra 2.o lt injection which I use to tow my dandy trailer tent (aprox 300kg). The sierra is a super tow car but is now looking tatty and I am thinking of a change. Does any have any advise as I'm thinking about trying an automatic, eg honda concerto 1.6 or mitsubishi lancer 1.6/1.8.
