  • the joys of the small claims court 19 May 2004 (Forum)
I have an expert report saying that the damage to the car\'s alternator, wiring etc. was likely caused by the incorrect use of a battery charger (i.e. the leads the wrong way round) and in their defence statement, they did state that a battery charger was used. They have ignored all my attempts to get a response out of them apart from one very abusive (a *lot* of swearing) telephone call to tell me where to go.
  • Safety Recall - Honda Ignition Switch 29 Jul 2003 (Forum)
(for information car has always been main dealer serviced until last service and MOT carried out at the beginning of this month, timing belt was changed by dealer at 5 yrs as recommended, and I had a new battery earlier this year. Have also had tyres and wiper blades - that\'s all) Safety recall says: \"some vehicles were manufactured with ignition switches that can wear prematurely and this may lead to difficulty starting the car\" (well, I did have some difficulties, which I presumed were battery related, and having changed the battery no longer experience them - sometimes car had stood a while and only done a few miles, now it\'s used more frequently and on longer journeys) \"in some cases it is possible that the switch might fail and that your engine may stall without warning\" I\'m obviously going to get it booked in asap, don\'t think my car has any problems, but who knows.
  • Should I buy a Ford Kuga PHEV? 20 Mar 2025 (Ask HJ)
As the Ford Kuga PHEV is subject to a recall for a high voltage battery issue with no fix yet, would you avoid buying or perhaps use as a bargaining tool?

  • Which version of the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports is better? 29 Nov 2023 (Ask HJ)
I'm looking at buying a used Toyota Corolla Touring Sports. Is it worth getting the new (2023) model or would the drive/handling of a 2021 model suffice?
  • Renault Kadjar - Renault dealer problem 19 Nov 2023 (Forum)
Wife's 67 plate Kadjar 22000 miles, when in warranty stop/start engine hazard light on, into Renault and told just needed reset so all fine, year later out of warranty same light comes on due to faulty battery. Renault dealer can't change battery for a month so get it done independently. Put it into Renault to get any other possible faults diagnosed. Had the car full day (£142) and told "it needs a higher technician to look at it" so need to keep it a second day, not happy as I need it to get to cancer treatment next day.
  • What electric car should I replace my E-Class with? 7 Aug 2023 (Ask HJ)
I currently drive a 2018 E 220d and would like to replace it with an EV saloon. Unfortunately everything I’ve taken for a test drive seems to have a hard...
  • Chevrolet Matiz - General advise about lack of power going uphill 27 Feb 2023 (Forum)
This puzzled me because I’ve not had any problems with the clutch. He also said the alternator needs changing and that would stop the battery charging, but again I’ve had no battery/warning lights on the dash. I know I don’t know much about the mechanics of a car but confused how the clutch would make the car sluggish uphill. Any thoughts welcome.
  • What's the best second hand electric car for £30,000? 12 Oct 2021 (Ask HJ)
What's the best second hand electric car for £30,000?
  • Honda Civic - Camera to catch hit & run drivers 29 Jul 2021 (Forum)
I don't drive regularly, so it needs to be able to be left running for several days without draining the battery, maybe by using a pair of hot-swappable batteries so I can bring one inside to charge when I'm not driving. I could probably cobble something together based on a Raspberry Pi, but does anyone know of any kits etc that would be especially well suited to this?
  • Audi A3 Sportback - Audi A3 wont crank after cleaning fuses 4 Jun 2021 (Forum)
I override the gearbox and moved between the drive, neutral etc and with each switch the corresponding letter was flashing. I have disconnected the battery and cleaned the terminals but still nothing. All of the electrics are working fine and the battery has plenty of charge. vI have rechecked all the fuses and everything appears fine. Could it be an immobilser issue that kicked in when the steering control module fuse was removed?
  • Renault kadjar - Garage mechanic tampering with dashcam 7 Mar 2021 (Forum)
He drove back to garage and parked inside. An hour between videos so he must have temporarily disconnected battery and camera returned to normal. Knowing all this what advice would you give? I've a good mind to report this to his manager.  This is no cheap camera. Front and rear were installed with a separate battery pack.
  • What hybrid should I replace my Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV with? 19 Jan 2021 (Ask HJ)
I have a 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. I have been happy with it, with the exception of the battery mileage - which dropped from 30 to 24miles within...
  • Always ask 4 May 2020 (Forum)
Just found out that a lass I sold a lovely 55 plated Nissan Micra 1.2 SE to a few years back has scrapped it and is in need of a replacement. I asked why the car was binned and was told that it refused to turnover so they replaced the battery and it still refused to turn, her “mechanic“ took a quick look and condemned the wee car. Suspecting it to be nothing like a life ending issue I spent ten minutes on t interweb which has informed me that this particular keyless entry model requires a reset after replacing the battery or it will indeed refuse to spin.
  • Vauxhall Astra - Astra Radio Keeps Forgetting the Code 2 Oct 2019 (Forum)
In fact, that slot was empty when I looked so I put a new 10amp in anyway but that made no difference. I assume that when I withdraw the key that the radio thinks that the battery has been disconnected so asks for the code again next time I come to the car. Either there is faulty wire somewhere at the back of the radio or else there is another fuse somewhere in a circuit which is supposed to tickle the radio while the key is withdrawn to tell it that the battery is still there.
  • Focus Mk2.5 I think electric problems 24 Aug 2019 (Forum)
I then got the car serviced to make sure the car was OK.   I changed the battery in the key fob had the garage check car thoroughly.   The only fault coded ive ever got is   (U0001) and (P1260)   I'm not getting these now though when I clear the fault codes it's OK again but sometimes I cant clear them I have a basic OBD 2 reader and a bluetooth one (bluetooth is better doesent always work though, prob need seperate thread for this).
  • 2004 Toyota Corolla 2.0 D4D 116 - Corolla E12 D4D won't start when hot 23 Mar 2019 (Forum)
It struggles to start when the engine is cold but it won't start at all when it reaches its operating temperature. When the engine is hot it acts as if the battery was weak but when cold the starter cranks 4 to 5 times ( slowly) before the engine comes to life. I have replaced the starter motor and the battery but it does not make any difference. It all started when the fan stopped working .
  • Citroen C3 1.4 Rhythm - Remote key locking not working ? 8 Jun 2017 (Forum)
At first it was hit and miss if the car locked and unlocked and then it just wouldn't lock at all. I changed the battery on the key fob and re-sinked the key fob by putting the key in the ignition, turning the key once and holding the lock button for ten seconds, but it still wouldn't work properly. I bought another battery and changed it again and what i've noticed is, my car locks and unlocks when i'm sat inside the car, but does nothing when i'm outside the car.
