  • Ford Focus advice please? 13 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Hi all, I'm new, so apologise if I'm raking over old ground....please point me in the direction of previous answers in that case! I have read DaisyH's thread, but didn't want to hijack it as my questions aren't quite the same. I am getting a second hand car.
  • Diesel options 31 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I paid (well my parents paid) £11,495 for my Golf when it was about 3months old, 6 months ago. By Trading it in, I expected to make a loss, however the dealer (VW) would only offer me £9000 against the TDI. Im not happy about losing £2500 in 6 months. So my options are; 1) Sell my Golf privately (£10-£10.5k?)
  • spark plugs & engine light. Daihatsu YRV 5 Jul 2005 (Forum)
I rang Daihatsu who were surprised that 2 prong-thing sparks would have caused this to happen, and suggested putting the old ones back in, which I have done. I started the engine after putting the old sparks back in, but the MIL was still on, which is really confusing me. Is it possible that changing the spark plugs did this?
  • Please Help! Galant Central Locking Prob 24 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Please help...I have a 1999 Mitsubishi Galant V6-24. I have today been trying to fit my old Sony stereo and 10 disc changer to replace the standard Philips stereo that came with the car. After fitting the Sony stereo I discovered that it no longer worked! so I removed it and put the old Philips standard stereo back in.
  • Fiesta 1.25 Zetec 1996 starting problem 16 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I first thought that ECU was retraining itself (after flat battery) but have now done about 50 miles and fault still reoccurs. Petrol is now all fresh. It is worse if car has not been used for more than about 60 minutes. It does need servicing and plugs are 35k old (previously they were good for 50k) and has never exhibited any sign of misfire or similar problem in the 85k since new.
  • Golf2 Heater controls 19 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Ive just undertook one of the worst jobs ive ever done on a car.. the heater matrix. The old one was leaking in the footwell, so i got hold of one of ebay for £40 all in and went with the Haynes method. Word of advice to anyone who doesnt already know this: if you are doing any job more involved than changing the cam belt, leave the haynes well alone.
  • Replacement for VW Polo? 16 Nov 2004 (Forum)
My mum's 4½-year-old VW Polo 1.0 has clocked up 70,000 miles, and she is wondering about replacing it. I have suggested that it's still fairly young and that she should hang onto it for another year or two, so I was wondering if backroomers have any suggestions?
  • Solving a friend's Mini 'problem' 16 Jun 2003 (Forum)
A friend just bought a Mini Cooper 500 LE, two years old, one of the last of the old ones, from a specialist, for use as a fun second car. He paid £8495 but got a very, very generous trade in on his M plate Cooper - he actually made a profit of about £1500 (!)
  • New fiesta? decision time 17 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Has any body published guide prices model range for the new fiesta due out shortly? Iam trying to dissuade my 81 yr old father from trading in his 5 yr old fiesta for a run out model. He is attracted by current incentives (note it is total cash cheaper to take finance at 3.4% with £1000 cash back than 0% finance offer).

  • Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 petrol engine - Service problems and the service Center claim the 21 Feb 2021 (Forum)
I had my 2 years old car service in west London Volkswagen in October it’s done 14100 miles from new a month later the car developed a fault I took it back to the same Center they claim the car has lost 25% of its oil and that in one month I have not even driven the car 500 mile and when I question the Center they claim the care manual stating the new car could loose 25% of its oil if it’s driven a 1000 mile if that the case maybe every one should think twice before buy from Volkswagen besides the treble service I got from them and they refused to assist me with a replacement car when the car is under warranty
  • Volvo S40 - Selling my car - how does income tax work on it? 10 Apr 2018 (Forum)
Hi! I'm looking to sell my old car, a 2008 Volvo S40 Sport for about £4500. I was wondering how tax works on car sales - I will be selling it privately if it matters. Is there any tax I need to worry about or not? The tax calculator says I've got only £3000 until I'm in the higher tax bracket - which is why I'm wondering about this.
  • Toyota Yaris MMT 2007 - Rejecting a used Car 11 Feb 2011 (Forum)
The car is now left with the garage. He has not agreed to pay for anything but the car needs fixing. They have told him several different reasons why the car doesn't drive properly as the old Yaris did, and we are now convinced that the vehicle is not fit for purpose.
  • Sub £5000 RWD sports car - suggestions? 1 Nov 2007 (Forum)
I'm contemplating buying a cheap (below £5000) sports car. Has to be a convertible as well. It must be a RWD. Like to keep that for at least 1 year. From the autotrader, following cars come within my budget Toyota MR2 (old shaped ones are below £2k, new shaped ones are quite pricey though) MG TF Mazda MX5 So far driven only MG TF (very short test drive from a private seller).
  • Mondeo - £1K family cars 13 Jan 2013 (Forum)
But is 200K miles too many? I've also toyed with the idea of an old luxury car. I've seen some BMW 3 or 5 series and Merc C and E classes at my budget sort of prices. Is the German engineering thing a myth, or is it possible to find something worthwhile at basement prices?
  • Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - 2005 - Broken Suspension Coil and Misc Problems 10 Feb 2017 (Forum)
Cost me £175 to join AA + Relay, towed 40 miles to home dealer. Is it normal that a 2005 Vectra should experience this problem? I am a careful driver (old man of 55), owned the vehicle from new, seem to have regular problems, for example - July 05 - Car pulls to right - dealer reckons ok - I changed the wheels over, improved. Oct 06 - returned from 2week holiday - battery dead - AA man, Faulty battery-replaced.
  • Government giving away £67m to Ferrari owners... 21 Dec 2012 (Forum)
Are we really saying that the owner of an £100,000 plus Ferrari cannot afford a £220 VED Tax Disc? Owners of eight to nine to ten year old cars pay full Road Tax. They get no free VED Disc. This exemption pre-SORN and before the computer age may have made sense. That the cost of issue and re-issue of a Tax Disc to an historic vehicle might have exceeded the revenue generated.
  • Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - 94 1.8D losing power at high revs 16 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I'm getting a top speed on the motorway of about 75mph (complete with juddering), where normally one can get 85+ out of it (for testing purposes only, of course, I don't routinely thrash it as it's 15 years old). I've renewed the air and fuel filters and made sure the crud gauze filter thing in the tank is clear, but no joy. I changed the glow plugs too as starting was poor (don't think they can have been changed since the car was new)- this has cured that problem and starting is now immediate.
