  • Hi Ho Silver! 2 Feb 2003 (Forum)
IMO the increase in popularity happened in the mid/late 90's - I especially recall seeing most of the "new" BMW 5's(E39) and Merc E class' coming out in Silver and it seemed that all the other marques followed suit. How many car adverts have you seen in recent years with Silver cars in them? On a personal note, I have to admit that I'm a fan of Silver too but my favourite is a slightly darker shade such as Graphite Grey - a list of my previous/current cars to prove it; Stirling Silver - E34 5 series metallic Graphite Grey - Toyota Celica metallic Dolphin Grey - E34 5 Series Metallic Silvery Grey (name??)
  • Diesel driving characteristics 12 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Where we live is heavy on roundabouts, and it seems pretty easy to get stuck in a the wrong gear with no power. I also have an old 115bhp BMW 318 petrol which will hit a roundabout in 4th gear with not much more than 1000rpm and still pull away ok. The diesel is left powerless and needs a gear or two dropped. Basically I seem to change gear a lot in the diesel when urban, which is not what I expected.
  • The case for having a van 20 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Doesn't really matter if it gets the odd parking ding, within reason. A positive benefit when left in a cark park - watch the BMWs etc. avoid parking anywhere near it 4. Bags of useful space for shifting things - furniture (including the contents of a student's flat), garden rubbish, building materials 5. Plenty fast enough - but not as fast as the fastest vehicle on the road (Astramax driven by a plumber's apprentice How many of you guys out there run a van - and what are your thoughts?
  • BMW 5-Series E61 Touring (2004 - ) - 520d SE - 12,000m report 12 Jun 2009 (Forum)
The run flat tyres are immensely strong - hitting some dry stone walling rocks obscured by vegetation on a tight mountain road, it sounded like the wheels had come off on the passenger's side but an inspection revealed cracking in the sidewall and no wheel damage. Tyre replaced by BMW but no ill affect on anything else it seems. Has used barely any oil, which is not due to be changed until 18k (despite my attempts to get them to change it anyway). Pedals are offset to the right like the Mercedes making left foot braking less comfortable and the windscreen wipers are left hand drive configeration which is annoying, as you get an unswept area in the top right hand corner of the screen.
  • Audi A5 S Line - about to buy a 2013 Audi A5 S Line 2 litre Diesel 31 Dec 2018 (Forum)
would you say its quiet and has low road noise? a quiet refined drive on the road is very important to me, surely gotta be better than the BMW? the car i`m looking at is a 2013 registered car with 18000 miles on the clock, full AUDI history, it will be my first ever try in an AUDI :smile2: it has optional extras on it, as listed below, but can any of you tell me if it has Xenon lights?

Hey all.... I have an E36 325 Tds Saloon. It's an M Reg (1994/1995). Last night, I popped the cover off the map lights as neither of them have worked...
  • Premium SE - Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid After 16 Months. 17 Dec 2024 (Forum)
Gets me from A to B in comfort with no stress. Build quality is solid, and having been caretaker to many cars over the past 30 years, including BMW and Mercedes I would rate this as every bit as good. The Ioniq has been faultless so far, and I will let you know my further thoughts after another 40,000 miles.
  • RIP handbrake, spare wheel and 4th cylinder 3 Sep 2024 (Forum)
Come back, Wartburg, all is forgiven - although unlike Ford and their "seen and not heard" V4, the East German maker never pushed smoothness as its USP. I'd be more than happy to hire a BMW or MINI on my next trip away, to see if they have found the magic formula to get their three pot to run smoothly.
  • Fun weekend car - suggestions? 30 Jul 2024 (Forum)
All FSH with auto boxes (I want auto) and main dealer supplied - would these be a decent or a risky buy in terms of reliability?  I have an excellent BMW/Mini independent garage very close to me if I had any issues or for servicing at reasonable cost. Other options are an MX-5 except I am not entirely sure it's my thing and later models are all manuals.

  • Any - New Year Motor 15 Dec 2020 (Forum)
Coming from an SUV (RAV - D4D) & having to accommodate a couple of medium sized dogs, it would be tempting to go similar However, l would like to return to an estate where in practice they have more room in the boot & are better to drive.  l'm tempted to spend a little & go premium with a C class Merc or a BMW 3 series (auto) but on the other hand the dogs are messy & perhaps this isn't the time. So l've decided to look for something around the 9/10 year old mark, spending around 3.5 - 4K, up to 5K if there's a good example.
  • Buying used car 20 Aug 2019 (Forum)
One last thing is fuel consumption, I don’t mind paying a little something extra for fuel but it should be at least reasonable mpg if possible. PS : no bmw please, I like the comfort but rear traction isn’t my thing.
  • Is it illegal to photograph a police car accident? 1 Apr 2019 (Forum)
Although the content of the post is purely to express gratitude and thanks to the police I wouldn’t want it to be taken in any other manner and to end up in trouble simply because of some admindroid! Thoughts on this ? (On an aside my next car would probably be a BMW-the car flattened the traffic light post, yet only very minimal damage to the car, atleast outwardly and the airbags didn’t deploy. Typical Germanic strength ,doubt most Japanese cars would have fared as well.)
  • Good & Bad on Honest John car reviews – who posts? 3 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Under the car reviews there is a 'Good & Bad' link near the top, see this example: https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/audi/tt-coupe-2006/ When you click said link you have 'What's Good' and 'What to watch out for'. Some cars, many BMW's and Mercedes for example, have page upon page of 'What to watch out for' with red 'X's' all over the place, warning. My question is, who posts all that stuff because I'm sure John himself could not possibly have enough time (not in this lifetime) to find all that stuff out, or know all that.
  • anybody used a vacuum oil extractor? 2 Jul 2018 (Forum)
My initial thoughts were that the conventional method was best but nowadays many garages use a similar system of "top extraction" the local BMW dealer definately does. With 2 cars it would soon pay for itself I'm thinking.
  • Vauxhall Astra - Smart Motorways 2 Jul 2018 (Forum)
I can think of a number of occasions in the past when the car I have been driving has suddenly cut out without warning and I have had to come to a halt by the side of the road, fortunately without causing an accident.   The recent news that some BMW's might cut out suddenly only highlights to my mind the dangerous nature of Smart Motorways if you have to stop suddenly when other traffic can be travelling up to 70mph in the same lane! How much thought have the authorities given to this scenario and what are you expected to do in the time before a stationary car is detected and a lane blocked sign appears on the overhead gantries.
  • 8 Apr 2018 (Forum)
Just as good handling as the Beemer at road legal speeds and is more than swift enough for most people, plus has the added bonus of decent mpg due to the COD feature and decent mid-range punch that doesn't require you to floor it to make progress like normally-aspirated cars. Oh, and about 2/3rds the price to buy and insure of the BMW. Less cache in the work car park, but not THAT much. Just make sure they find a decent main dealer to get it looked after at, and don't get a DSG auto box - go for the manual only.
  • PCP bandwagon - will it ever stop? 18 Mar 2018 (Forum)
It seems to have hugely favoured the German makes to sell access to £40k+ cars to people who barely look able to afford much more than an ordinary second hand car. I’m continuously amazed by who I see sitting in or getting out of shiny BMWs, Evoques and Mercedes Benzes in the average, not even up market, supermarket car park, their youth in particular and relative ordinariness is obvious. Will the whole pcp thing end? I don’t understand what’s propping it up.

I am certain that other manufacturers will follow the lead of JLR and Aston Martin.  Ferrari Dino?  Lambo Miura?  Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing?  BMW 3.0CSL?  Porsche 911? What do you reckon?
