  • Pug 406 - Exactly how bad are they? 22 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Would prefer the diesil engine pug/vectra but they may come out a little pricey, have test driven a few 2.0 petrol and done the maths on the fuel cost, can deal with that. However, reading HJs car-by-car, and what car etc, the list of problems is a little worrying, so wanted to get people here's experiences / feeling for what the car-by-car says, all and any comments welcome!
  • Do we molly-coddle cars ? 12 Dec 2002 (Forum)
-cam belt changes on the off-chance it needs one. -this oil rather than that oil. -special petrol. -supermarket vs main garage petrol. -always warming the car up when you start it before you switch it off again. And it goes on........ -this was or that wax -this bulb or that bulb -endless additives Well, not me.
  • Nissan Micra - 14 day French road test 27 Oct 2005 (Forum)
t see any driving that raised my eyebrows. If I may be permitted a non-motoring tip, French supermarkets no longer give out poly bags. We learned this the hard way when we popped into a supermarket and loaded up with supplies.
  • Any - Does Start/Stop Technology Really Save any Money? 23 Jun 2014 (Forum)
I have been attempting to make my own comparative measurements on a Sept 2001 (61) registered 22,500 miles (and rising) 1.25 litre supermini over intervals in excess of 1200 miles and it is proving difficult to see any significant benefit or improvement in fuel economy by manually 'emulating' the behaviour of a well engineered s/s system such as might be found on cars with sophisticated alternator and battery management systems designed to optimise fuel economy and overall performance i.e. as per BMW 'efficient dynamics' specifications.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 01 2.0 HDi Fault code P0230 Limp Mode 16 Mar 2010 (Forum)
At least design an ECU diagnosis system that can tell you the exact problem, or support DIY diagnosis without all this dealer analyser rubbish. Rant over. I have to get the bus to the supermarket. Thanks to all the people who have put useful postings on this site. The information has given me the confidence to look into the problem myself.
  • Volkswagen Polo II (1991 - 1994) - 94 1.3 Engine cutting out 18 Oct 2008 (Forum)
My daughter's 1994 Polo (1.3 petrol engine) has had an intermittent problem over the last few months. Back in May the engine cut out on a short run from the supermarket. The mechanic was called out, arrived 20 minutes later and the car wouldn't start when they tried it. They opened the bonnet to see why, they tried to start it again and bingo it started - even though they hadn't done anything.
  • Veg oil in your tank 13 Jul 2001 (Forum)
I couldn't find any test of a Polo using salad oil over a long period (though there was material about a diesel Polo and its fuel economy) and I think all this must emanate from the following article, which I have pasted in - in both the original German and a Babelfish computer translation, which has a certain surreal quality.
  • 2yrs on from buying a 9yr old dpf-equipped diesel 10 Sep 2019 (Forum)
Condition on purchase: Immaculate, except for 1) small split in the front passenger seat leather stitching between left bolster join and seat base leather - only noticeable if you dug your fingers in there 2) a small supermarket ding near the rear fuel filler, no paintwork damage - very minor. Price paid: £3800. (listed at £3995) It had been on the forecourt for 3 days, 'a trade in' said the dealer. No reason to doubt that having seen the paperwork.
  • Toyota Prius not rubbish to drive shock! 30 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Underneath the screen in typical Toyota fashion is an ugly LED digital clock which looks like it came from a 70s Corolla. Two additional functions on the screen are an ?energy transfer? display and a fuel consumption meter. The former shows which energy source is doing what, whether the car is consuming or regenerating energy and what the state of the battery is. The latter shows the fuel consumption in 15 minute time intervals together with little tokens which you win when you manage to regenerate more than 50 kW of power.
