Which do you like 20 Jul 2011 (Forum)
My headache is coming on again. There are just so many excellent cars these days. Needs are reliability, frugal fuel, prefer diesel, largest luggage capacity possible (given overall size--estates are OK) safety, comfort. HELP Please. And thank you. -
any - Real MPG on HJ website 5 May 2011 (Forum)
Saw with interest the new part of HJ website about real fuel consumption. Average on a recent 1400 mile touring trip to france and belgium in an Epica 2.0 turbo diesel with 3 on board plus all our bagage was (I thought) an excellent 42mpg. drove at motorway speeds up to a true 85mph where allowed on motorways, so very pleasantly surprised. here in old blighty can generally get 45mpg by sticking to true 70mph on our motorways, that is close to what chevrolet claim, so not too bad for a large heavy car. -

Legacy or Passat - Estate car buying advice please - Subaru or VW? 11 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Typcal journeys weekly are short but then every couple of months there is a 500 mile round trip (no trailer) to consider, good fuel economy is therefore key for us. With a budget of up to £16/17k or thereabouts, we've narrowed it down to a Subaru Legacy Spouterourer (2.0 diesel - probably the 2008 model) or a Passat Estate (again, 2.0 tdi 170 PS) any thoughts/considerations/experience from you would be gratefully received. -

New Mondeo -- "feed forward" torque?? 6 Aug 2007 (Forum)
In the A*t*c*r road test of the estate, they comment on something called "feed forward" torque: "The 2.0-litre diesel has a re-mapped fuel system that helps pulling away from the line smoothly. Called ?feed forward?, it provides a pre-emptive boost of torque to the engine before setting off, and seems to work well." -
Ideas for a functional estate circa £2k 25 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Hi All, My Dad's Pug 405 1.9TD estate is giving up the ghost and starting to burn more engine oil than fuel. So the hunt is on for a suitable replacement. Being a pensioner his budget is limited to circa £2k and I'm looking for something that is 'functional' - i.e. not bothered about colour, styling or extras. -
suggestions please 17 Nov 2006 (Forum)
I am looking for suggestions or recomendations for a small 4 or 5 door car (fiesta size) to use as a second family car and for short but frequent commute (25 mile roundtrip per day). Don't need thrills just reliability and economy. I'm thinking diesel but some would argue that at current fuel prices this can be a false economy on smaller cars. budget is about £2k At the mo considering Corsa, Fiesta or polo but at this budget I can't find much that is less than 6yrs old and about 80k miles. -
Volkswagen Passat (1988 - 1997) - 96 1.9Tdi Estate, srarting problems. 15 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Initially after doing this sometimes the car would not start, but after a few days it was o.k The problem I have got now is that when you turn the engine it tries to start and then when you accelerate it cuts off. Someone has suggested it could be an electrical relay issue. There is plenty of diesel in the car. The heater light does tend to go off after a few seconds and then comes back on agan. Could it be a fuel pump problem.please advise. . -
Rover 600 starting problems 3 Oct 2005 (Forum)
My rover 600 diesel 98 model has starting problems as the weather gets colder or i i leave the car for a day or two. I had battery replaced and my garage replaced 3 of the 4 glow plugs. He said the fourth glow plug was behind fuel pump and would take longer. everything seemed ok put as the weather has got colder it is taking longer to start. -
Question for Dan J (Mondeo TDCi auto) 28 Apr 2004 (Forum)
tangential to the diesel - auto thread. Dan, Seem to remember you were going to start working for Ford. Did they ever sort the mismatch between the TDCi engine and the Durashift gearbox? What is it like to drive in practice? -
Vauxhall Omega 2.2 DTi CDX smoking 30 Dec 2003 (Forum)
My 51 plate Omega 2.2 DTi CDX is billowing white smoke from under the offside front wing so much so that passing motorist draw my attention to it cos they think i'm on fire. The smoke fills the cabin with diesel fumes. The car has been in the dealership twice and the answer from Vauxhall technical department is that a sort of exhaust system is creating the smoke and that this is normal operation also fuel drips from this exhaust pipe under the offside wing. -
£5K to spend, what to buy? 22 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Hello Soon to be made redundant, will give up my trusty company Focus, need to buy something and am hoping for some help. OK here goes, £5K to spend, want Focus size vehicle, Diesel if possible, will be doing 15-25K miles per year, mostly motorways. Love the Focus handling, but this is not so important if I am driving my 'own' vehicle as I wont be thrashing it quite so much. Servicing, Insurance, Fuel costs (or lack of) quite important as I have a feeling I am going to be skint for a while before getting the new business going.
