Owning 2 cars, insurance question 27 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I would like a car a bit different from the other rep mobiles (I've currently got a celica) but it's turning out a bit pricey for both fuel and servicing and also I'm thinking about residuals and the fact that I'm pumping up the mileage at a rate of 2k+ per month. Ideally I'd like a reasonably quick diesel i.e. Fabia vRS, Saab 9-3, BMW etc but they're all a bit out of my price range and I don't want to spend too much and then end up 3 years later with massive depriciation due to the high mileage. -
Diesel 309 Smoke Problem 20 Mar 2003 (Forum)
In the last 2 to 3 weeks i have encountered smokey exhaust problems which seem to be getting worse and worse. Start up is extremely smokey, and often runs... -
MINI One D - Mini one D doesn't start when engine is hot 2 Oct 2015 (Forum)
It sometime takes me 15 minutes to get it running. I normally try switching on and off the ignition a few times to engage the warm up for the diesel, then turn on the engine and pump the accelerator and that normally gets it going. I have had this problem for about 6 months now maybe longer and it seems to be getting worse. I had a diagnostic test done by my mechanic and had the crank shaft sensors changed (mini official part) and a fuel pump (which seemed to fix it for a week or so) then I found a post about air being in the fuel line and one of the return valves could need changing. -
Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - 94 1.8D losing power at high revs 16 Jul 2009 (Forum)
The old plugs were a bit sooty, so I assumed that the injectors might be grubby, and ran some STP diesel injector cleaner through- one load in the tank, the other added directly to the fuel filter. Again, no luck. Is the only possible cause the injectors? In this case I'm guessing I'll need to get them tested/ cleaned and potentially replace a dodgy one. -
Citroen C5 (2001 - 2008) - 2002 110 HDi - Leak of precious fuel... 23 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Hi, before throwing myself at the mercy of a garage, I thought I would see if anyone could help with my little problem. I have a 2002 51 reg C5 110bhp HDI with close approaching 100k miles. A strong smell of diesel and small tell trale drip from back of sump tray lead me to have a good look today under the bonnet and I found that the fuel pipe with two nuts going inyto the high pressure pump is leaking albeit lightly. -
Fuel efficiency - when to switch 25 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Petrol is about £4.80/gallon now, so 775 gallons is £3,720/year. The question is, should I get a diesel to cut costs or do I stick with the petrol. Bearing in mind that I work contracts, and the contract is likely to last about 12 months, maybe a little longer, and my likely next contract would be in London, where I wouldn't need the car. -
Vectra DTI fuel problem 29 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Eventually for the first time I called on my breakdown service and Green Flag arrived in 50 minutes and immediately suspected a fuel problem. He was correct and after bleeding the Vectra finally fired up and ran smoothly. We discussed what might have caused it and he suggested a new filter even though the present one was changed 4000 miles ago. -
diesel cars - DPF and removing it my opinion 3 Oct 2013 (Forum)
I would stop buying diesel cars I think the dpf on some models people should be allowed to remove them because all they do is cause problems the Eu law should keep the nose out of the uk may be the Eu should stop these manufactures that lie to their customers or there should be warning signs up in the dealerships about this useless heap of junk .an till they become fit for purpose and then people take them off then it should be illegal manufactures are cashing in on these dpfs failing all over the country they should be replacing them for free and not charging customers because if an item is doomed to fail at any point it’s not fit for purpose don’t buy a diesel car with a dpf on as you will hate it people will be driven away from diesel cars if the dpf remains an on going problem they should rename it what a load of rubbish . -

RIP Diesel Hatchback 20 Jun 2020 (Forum)
The 205 1.8D - Well known for doing huge mileages, capable of over 50mpg yet rode as well as a luxury saloon. Citroen AX Diesel - A hoot to drive yet rode really well and could do 70mpg no bother. Shame they never built a turbocharged version. Peugeot 306 Dturbo - The first diesel hot hatch. These were a hoot to drive yet comfy and great on fuel. -
which drivers' car for commute? 25 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I've shortlisted the following: Focus / Mazda 3 1.6 diesel - have driven and liked both but my budget would involve highish mileages and concerns about diesel reliability As above but 2.0 petrol - not sure if I'd get near 40mpg on my town & country commute Previous gen Civic 2.0 Type S - fuel economy again? -
Nissan Pulsar - Best used sub-£10k pothole proof SUV? 7 May 2025 (Forum)
I’m sure most of the “soft roaders” out there will be no tougher than my Nissan. I do a very low mileage so not too concerned about fuel consumption but no diesel, please. And would need to be ULEZ compliant, certainly not paying the Khan tax! Suggestions welcome. -

1812 overdriveture 15 May 2009 (Forum)
Discussion on Radio 4 today about electric cars being a lot quieter than fossil fueled motors ... a petrol/diesel motor can be heard from 12ft away where'as an electric job can only be heard from 3 ft away (have I explained that properly!) They were saying electric cars may have to be made more noticible to peds and some suggestions were ~ Horses hooves ... but would sound like a stampede on the M25 etc., etc. -
M5 shut after LPG Land Rover fire 30 Dec 2008 (Forum)
The road was closed for an hour at junction 27, the Sampford Peverell turn-off, near Tiverton, after the incident at about 1130 GMT. 26 December 2008 Police said the motorway was closed for safety reasons because the vehicle was dual-fuelled, carrying petrol or diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuel." I have not seen any other reports of other road closures for this reason. Will this lead to LPG conversions having warning stickers re LPG? -
France - 30 Years behind UK 21 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I remember filling up with petrol close to Dover in past times (maybe even 30 years ago) because the price in France was so ferocious. It's like old times - diesel fuel is more or less the same price now after the Pound has dropped against the Euro, but petrol is going to cost you around £1.20 a litre. I hear that some of the booze in the "cheap" shops at Calais is now more expensive than your local Sainsburys and the car parks are empty. -
Car renting advice 3 Nov 2008 (Forum)
In 4 days I'll drive about 700 miles or so. I'm thinking of getting either a VW Passat or Focus, would like it to be diesel. While approaching one of the car rental companies, could I be specific about a model and fuel type? If so what would be the best possible car rental company in or around Slough? { typo in header corrected } -
