Nissan Pulsar - Best used sub-£10k pothole proof SUV? - HankHill

Second year running that my Nissan Pulsar 1.6 has failed its MOT on a broken coil spring (different side each time). Roads round our way are terrible these days. What’s the best used sub-£10k pothole proof SUV? I’m sure most of the “soft roaders” out there will be no tougher than my Nissan. I do a very low mileage so not too concerned about fuel consumption but no diesel, please. And would need to be ULEZ compliant, certainly not paying the Khan tax! Suggestions welcome.

Usually best to replace springs in pairs anyway. No such thing as a pothole proof SUV and they are overpriced for what they are so you won't get much for £10k.

Possibly larger off roaders will be more resistant but if petrol to help re ULEZ the cost of fuelling would be eye watering - and again for £10k you'll only get a near sc***yard banger.

My Skoda Superb had a rear spring fail after a few years and a front spring fail the year after. Replaced them all in pairs and the replacements we're still going strong when I sold it after 10 years ownership.

Good call. I had a 3.0 Outback a few years back, brilliant car.

Your best pot hole proofing would be to fit smaller wheels with higher profile tyres.

You could also go for something very light like a Suzuki or something less sophisticated like a Fiat Tipo or Seat Toledo/Skoda Rapid.

less sophisticated like a Fiat Tipo

Hmm, that reminds me. Fiat Panda 4x4? and higher profile tyres a good call.

I do like the Panda 4x4 but they're very thirsty (I know you don't really care), I found the seats uncomfortable and the twinair engines need proper maintenance.. If you can find one with a full dealer service history it's certainly worth a test drive (I don't get on with a lot of car seats) but I'm not sure its suspension would be much more robust than anything else.

Probably cheaper to just keep buying new springs for your Pulsar.

Maybe a Dacia Duster? They seem quite tough things, presumably with Romanian roads in mind - they may well be better than UK ones by now. It may share some parts with your Nissan being part of the Renault club but others will know. But on sensible tyres I imagine it would be good.

Nothing is pothole proof !

best thing, get some quality new springs and some reinforced tyres and or smaller wheels if possible with higher profile tyres. Way cheaper than buying a potential future problem.

Springs not expensive and fitting not too bad either.

How about a RAV4 petrol.

Well within your budget , 2 or 4Wd . Great reputation for reliabilty as long as you choose the petrol version.

70 profile tyres which can take all the punishment served up on our roads
