• Ford fiesta brake disc stuck!! 19 Dec 2005 (Forum)
  I have an N-reg mk3 fiesta and am in the middle of changing the front discs and pads. I've jacked up the car, taken off the wheels, but one of the brake discs is completely stuck to the hub! After many attempts to gently persuade it off i resorted to a bit of brute force with a mallet but all to no avail, the thing just won't come off. I suspect the car has been in an accident previous to me owning it and that there are still parts of the car that are just a bit bent out of shape.

  Like many here i have been driving a few years now and was wondering at what time did filtering onto dual carrageways and motorways involve forcing motorists already on said roads to brake or swerve across instead of giving way and filtering on when safe to do so?. Now when you approach a slip and you have traffic on your right you have to watch the cars comming down the slip to see if they are going to watch your speed and then go faster than you so they can pull in front, or are they going to pull out anyway making you brake,or are they going speed up to 70, see that there is nowhere for you to go and then brake hard and wait on the slip.

  All going well until I had to push the cylinder back into the caliper to take up the thickness of the new pads. I unscrewed the brake fluid top, as I squeezed the cylinder with a G clap it pushed in fine but fluid started to leek from around the cylinder seal. To me this means the seal needs replacing before the car can be driven.

  Greetings, All. I would like to change the brake fluid on SWMBO's ten year old, very neat and tidy, 31k mile 306 1.8 SR Sedan. The fluid has never before been changed in the car's life, and I'm concerned about shearing bleed nipples like I did Donkey's years ago on my MG Metro when the car was only three years old.

  Did anyone read the Ferrari Special edition of Autocar? There is an interesting bit in the letters page about braking distances. The Porsche Carrera GT on road tyres with ceramic composite discs and eight piston calipers did 70-0mph in 52.1m with a kerbweight of 1472kg. The Land Rover Discovery TDV6 HSE on dual purpose tyres did 70-0mph in 51.2m with a kerbweight of 2718kg.

  I have a Rover 416 auto (1997) and have a rubbing sound coming from the front wheels when braking....Im pretty sure its worn pads and maybe discs...Ive only ever changed pads on older cars and was wondering if its a difficult job to do for a relative novice in car maintenance, as this car has ABS etc, and I dont want to damage this and have no experience with it at all.

  Don't know if its exactly true, but still a good story that makes me smile. A friend of a friend took their car into the local, well known, "fast - fit" place for a free brake safety check. All the brakes were fine but they were advised that all their shock absorbers were in a dangerous way and this could seriously affect their steering etc under heavy braking. If thats the case, they said, you better change them over.
