  • Radiator losing water 19 May 2003 (Forum)
Hi everyone, I drive an F-reg Vauxhall Astra, which causes me no end of grief, being an old car and all. I threw a piston last year, so had the engine replaced with a G-reg 1.4 Cavalier engine. My radiator is 3 years old, and I've already had the water pump replaced this year when it packed up in October.
  • Advanced driving question 9 May 2003 (Forum)
What was worrying was the lack of any hard shoulder - the slip road just joined at 45 degrees - so it was potentially dangerous. As it was I feel my safety was compromised by this plonker. What do you advanced driving gurus reckon I should have done? My guess is: move to lane 2 and ignore the inevitable hooting and light flashing. Thanks. Leif. PS: saw an expensive BMW convertible steaming down the M4 at 100 mph in lane 3, then dart across to lane 1, undertake some cars, then dart back out to lane 3.
  • Diesel value with short trips ? 13 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Firstly, I am considering changing to a diesel but a friend who was in the motor business for over 40 years has made me think again due to the mileage and the pattern of my driving. I currently drive a Merc. 320 Estate petrol. Due to retire soon and need a car cheaper to run as I will be paying the bills - hence the diesel. I will cover 6,000 to 7,000 miles a year, about 60/70% of the mileage will be on short runs of a few miles and my mate reckons that I will not get the economy due to the volume of these short runs.
  • Postcard from NZ 11 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Hi all, Couldn't travel to the other side of the globe and not post a message (keeping the international aspect of HJ's forum alive!) Couple of things I've noticed about the cars here : Everyone drives Japanese stuff, it all looks the same, and the ones I've driven all drive the same too. I've not really ever been a fan of Japanese cars, but they get the job done surprising well and don't tax you when driving 100s of Kms.
  • Oil loss 21 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Anyway, i've given as much info as possible - can anyone explain the sudden increase in leakage, and the smoke from the bonnet? The car is still driving really well. A hard 200 mile drive the other day didn't cause any more oil loss than in daily driving. All I can think of is that it seems to be since i had the plugs and leads replaced a week or so ago.
  • Mazda MX-6 12 Apr 2001 (Forum)
I currently drive a mazda mx-6 (as the subject indicates) and find it a very fun drive (although the cabin is a bit rattly) on a 94M with 77k. I have read the manual and spec which states that it is a 60 litre fuel tank.
  • Hic... - Moving a car while intoxicated. 11 Jun 2024 (Forum)
Friend refused as had a few drinks for lunch. "You won't get your bins emptied " " I've been drinking can't drive..." I agree he was totally right to not move it. no one else insured to drive it.
  • Motorway slip road speed limit 4 Apr 2024 (Forum)
Once I approached the motorway, I saw all people driving at 60-70mph. Could I ask if the speed limit is only for the slip road? And at what speed should I merge to motorway. Thanks for helping
  • Car Insurance UK 25 Jan 2022 (Forum)
General question, for anyone who drives and has made an insurance claim for an incident not your fault. Would that shoot up my premium on renewal? I drive forward into a parking spot in a narrow road and was indicating to park. I wasn't as close to the curb as could be and left my indicator on and a car facing me forced its way forward hitting my wing mirror and drove off before giving me a chance to reverse closer parrelel to the curb.
  • Audi A1 Sportback 1.0 tfsi - Epc warning light showing 3 Nov 2021 (Forum)
The epc light came on whilst driving up the m6 on Sunday. It has come on few times since but intermittently. It’s not the type of journey the car is used to. No sign of any restricted running or limp mode. Hasn’t come on at all today driving locally.
  • Mazda CX-5 - Mazda CX5 2.2 Diesel - Occasional stutter at speed 3 Apr 2021 (Forum)
Hi    my 2015 2.2 Mazda CX5 diesel has started, occasionally, stuttering when driving at speed (5th / 6th gear).   I can drive for a few hours and it maybe happens once but it's a noticeable stutter. For the driver, it feels like something is catching.   No engine management lights have ever appeared.

  • BMW - Battery on Mini Cooper 24 Jan 2020 (Forum)
I was starting to get battery warning light on dash if engine was off but Stereo on (cleaning inside car etc) It does a lot of short distance stop starts. I was going to ask for assistance in getting battery out but as it turned out I had a 9 hours drive on Monday anyway.  I have a sensor in Cigerette lighter slot which shows an output of around 14 volts on average (I assume thats what it is lol) I havent tried sitting with engine off with stereo on yet but is 9 hours driving likely to given it a decent charge up ??
  • Ford Fiesta ecoboost 1.0 - Car Intermittently not starting 25 Sep 2019 (Forum)
The main dealer checked it for four hours but the diagnostics could not find a fault. It's 3 years old and done 47,000 miles (a driving school car ). Someone is taking a driving test in 2 weeks and I'm worried the car might not start at the start of the test. Any help would be appreciated! Rob

  • MGZS Remind you of anything - GM parts bin bits 19 Sep 2018 (Forum)
There appears to be a school of thought that the powertrain of the ZS is being built "just good enough" low towing weight, low torque? remind anyone of Astra gearboxes? (GM bits) Although I liked driving the car as a day to day thing on a test drive (or 3 )..... ok on all counts, but only that. I decided to stick with the KIA venga. Someone waiting more than 6 weeks for a windscreen already, spare wheels not available?
  • Income to car value? 29 Jun 2018 (Forum)
It seems there are many new 'top of the range' cars these days and I did begin to think are these people wealthy or living a lifetime of slavery with a plan to retire at 80? I drive a car worth £250 which I have owned for 15 year yet have a high income my salary alone is £80k basic plus 20-25% bonus. The other half earns nearly six figures and yet again drives a car worth less than £2k.
  • Mini Cooper S R53 vs Clio 197 vs Ford Focus ST M2 8 Apr 2018 (Forum)
I know the Focus is a very different car, but I am really looking for a car that is fun to drive day to day, can be modded and upgraded easily and is fun on a track day. I have narrowed it down to these 3 options, but want to know opinions on which will be most fun/reliable/interesting to drive.
