FIAT Punto (1994 - 1999) - 1998 1.2 no spark 2 Aug 2008 (Forum)
He said to change the sensor first and if it doesnt work to do the relay and failing that, the ECU The fuel pump primes but there is no spark, my local (30 minute drive) scrapyard has the same model in but i have a mate who is an experianced mechanic says it is bound to be the ignition pack , saying the fuel wouldnt prime if ECU/crank sensor is faulty I dont realy want to buy the wrong bit/s for it obviously and i only have free car hire from AA till saturday lunchtime. If its the sensor or relay it would be handy (cheap). -
Audi A2 (2000 - 2005) - Should we be insulating our garages ? 11 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Yes I know not many people keep their car in a garage these days, but I was curious when I noticed that my average miles per gallon was consistently lower early in the day. It is actually well established that cold fuel reduces fuel efficiency (in fact in the US pre-heat kits are available.) So in the name of science I have just done some research (on the M3, on my way to work) and the results are here, and appear to indicate that going from 15C to 25C increases mpg from around 70 to around 80 mpg ! -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 98 1.8 Unable to start car bought from auction 1 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I can manually excite the starter from bridging the positive bat term over to the ignition wire on the solonoid (sp). With this, the engine turns over. However, fuel does not appear to be comming through. Nor is there a spark on the plugs when I remove them. So, I have no power getting to the starter from key on full turn. I have no fuel getting through. I have no spark. -
Vauxhall Vectra B (1995 - 1999) - 97 1.8 sometimes won't start. 29 May 2008 (Forum)
Since then I have tried to find an answer but they are many and varied, fuel pump, dirt in tank, relay, engine management thingy or even "it's a common fault with Vauxhall's". So if anyone can shed any light on this irritating problem, I would be very greatful SLT -

Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2003 130TDCi - Erratic idle. 28 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Shame on me. Effect - slight improvement. As if the PCM (ECU in old money) was relearning how to fuel the engine correctly. 3. Added a shot of STP fuel system cleaner. The bigger bottle £15 from halfords, added to tank then filled up with shell diesel. Efffect - Car appears to be cured. No erratic idle and no wanting to drive at 1550 revs when in gear. -
Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 2006 TDCi - Diesel starting on veggy oil 9 Jan 2008 (Forum)
But at least it started and on the way back was ok. Today it won't start at all. Does it sound as though the fuel is too viscous and the tank has to be drained? And if so does the pump have to be primed? -
Toyota - More quality failures from Toyota 7 Dec 2007 (Forum)
The latest recall is for 4000 cars in the UK - Lexus IS250 & GS350 - and requires 3.5 hours of work to replace faulty fuel pipes that are leaking fuel into the engine bay. OK so strictly speaking these are Lexus and not Toyota but they are the same Company. There doesn't seem to be many months go by without Toyota making some recall somewhere in Europe or the US. -
polo wont start 21 Feb 2007 (Forum)
after a month or so, the problem arrised again and eventualy the engine stopped all together, it will turn over but it wont fire. ive checked the fuel line and theres fuel getting as far as the single point injection unit. after there theres nothing at all. could it be the 's.p.i' or something to do with the 'e.c.u'? or could it be the battery? i would be very thankfull if any one could help or advise me on this matter as my legs are realy hurting from having to walk everywhere. -
VW mk2 1L Polo and a Pierburg 1b3 9 Dec 2006 (Forum)
right. mk2 1043cc polo with 1b3 on it. over 2 weeks, was getting a little harder to cold start. then on one night of warm engine drive, it kepts stuttering as if it had run out of fuel, then recovering itself again.(has a new filter b4 that happened) limped home. looked in morning and it failed to fire. took cover off airbox and found fuel spurting up out of carb top. conemmed carb. got another off a scrapper and that fixed car for 6 months. -
Petrol rationing - what if? 30 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I remember, at the time, being pretty miffed because owning my motorcycle only entitled me to a reduced number of coupons compared to, say, a car. I felt that everyone should be entitled to the same amount of fuel and should be allowed to use it as they wished. Can anyone confirm when petrol rationing coupons have been issued since ww2 - and if they were actually used? Also, if we should end up in a situation where petrol was rationed again, should the owner of a thirsty car be entitled to more than, say, a fuel efficient motorcyclist? -
pug 306 hdi non starter 11 Aug 2006 (Forum)

Problem Golf 25 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Ive explained to them that when I pull away and want to excelarate, the car hesitate, I then have to dip the clutch to get it to go faster!! The mechanic at VW said maybe I should drive it harder, but it already using more fuel than I think I should!! Im at a loss and my warranty runs out this March!! Ive even put Fuel Filter, its done under 70,000 miles. Not due for plug until 80k. Maybe it needs another Throttle Body!! -
306 HDi - sooty exhaust 20 Jan 2006 (Forum)
For the last 1000 miles a grey cloud had been visible in the r/v mirror when accelerating, and gobs of soot are sometimes ejected at the rear. Other data: oil consumption not measurable between changes; fuel has been up to 60mpg but is falling; starting and running are normal; temp gauge normally just below 80° but went up to 95° in a traffic jam recently. Just had its 36K service, with fuel and air filters, and things have improved (cloud not seen so far), but indie says it's not quite right and he would need the Pug diagnostic to sort what he believes is an electronic problem. -
Vauxhall Cavalier TD starting probs 6 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I suspected the heater plugs. I changed these for new ones. Problem still existed. I then changed the air filter and the fuel filter. Still the same problem. I have put injector cleaner in the fuel and its still the same problem. What I noticed tonight whilst messing is when I turn the ignition and let the heater plugs go out and then repeat this 3 times, it will start ok. -

old top gear question.. 20 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Just been having a discussion with my mate in work about Audi's, he's got an new A6 and was banging on about how good it was with MPG for a car of its size and it made me think.... ...I remember watching top gear months and months ago where clarkson did some kind of challenge in an Audi, not sure if was the A6 or A8?? where he did a challege where he went from London to Glasgow and back again on 1 tank of fuel. The problem is I only saw the 1st half of the programme and didn't get to find out if he made the full journey? and for some reason its bothered me for ages! I remember him turning off all lights and air con and driving at 56 all the way to conserve fuel. -
Best and worst mpg's 17 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I'll start us off: Mine is the old fashioned method as mentioned above, brim tank, reset milo, use fuel, rebrim, compare fuel used to mileage completed. Worst tank: 23mpg Best tank: 33mpg I'm not quite sure which of those is the most embarrassing :D That best tank was done almost entirely at between 100 and 120 mph though (in Germany) so I think is quite impressive.
