  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 07-10-2017 Part 1 3 Sep 2019 (Forum)
I did have each serviced by BMW at the correct service intervals which might have had something to do with it. Oh, and both diesels ran on 'supermarket' fuel the whole time.
  • late 05 Ford Focus 110ps estate - Diesel particulate filter additive 29 Jun 2012 (Forum)

  • Peugot 306 diesel - Bad starting 8 Apr 2012 (Forum)

  • Mercedes Benz - Decided to hang on to old car 7 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I had decided to change my old 'C' class Mercedes that has given great service for 4 years for a used 'E' class diesel but with the current promise of road tax hikes and fuel prices going through the roof I have changed my mind. My C class is reg in 2000 so keeping it will deny Gordon a few hundred £ s and I am no longer sure that diesel is making much of a saving.
  • Vectra 2.2TDi 16v Auto MPG ??? 26 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Vectra 2.2TDi LS 16v Auto Diesel Hatchback Have recently purchased this car, it is a 2003 (03) plate and it has covered 34k and has the ECOTEC engine, some advise please..... It seems to me to be drinking the diesel very heavily and I have now filled it up three times since Ive had it and on each occassion it is struggling to make 300 miles before the low fuel light appears.
  • official mpg figures and reality 7 May 2005 (Forum)
This could be due to the way I drive, or the conditions I drive in, of course. (And I sort of get the impression that people with Honda Accord diesel engines don't usually get the mileage they expect, but people with VAG diesels do.) The most obvious way of testing this is when a driver who regularly keeps a record of fuel consumption changes cars.
  • Fabia TDI v's Mini D 2 Aug 2004 (Forum)
However I'm concious that its been out for a while and over 3 years the residual on the Mini will be better. 1) How does the trade rate the diesel? Doesn't seem to be many around used - is this good or bad. A friend has a regular Cooper and the fuel economy is really bad - hence the interest in the diesel. 2) If I do go for the Mini what are the vital options to add - clearly aircon, anything else???
  • Cheap Motoring 28 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Hello Back Roomers I have to travel 60 miles each way to get to work and to do this, I bought a 94 Montego diesel Countryman (£500). I roughly average about 42 mpg and this costs me around £50 a week in fuel. However, while the engine is still running like brand new (well running anyway!) the body is having trouble hanging onto it!
  • Ventilation problems - MONDEO 9 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I've been noticing for a while that when ever I switch on the cabin fan in my diesel mondeo (95N LX TD) the smell of unburnt/burnt diesel fumes enters the cabin. I've checked the engine bay for any obvious fuel leaks with the engine running, couldn't find any obvious leaks. I was also told at a recent MOT that the front exhaust downpipe was leaking (not a failure point) so I had it changed even though the mechanic who replaced it said there wasn't anything wrong with it.
  • My diesel Corsa won't start 18 Jun 2012 (Ask HJ)

  • So would you buy and oldish diesel.... 26 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I have thought about sourcing a W124 MB (probably a petrol auto), which would of course be cheaper, but over 15k miles a year, I am looking at spending a good slice more on fuel - which could go on potential diesel maintenance costs! Suggestions appreciated... Jon
  • Volvo XC90 - Volvo high pressure diesel pump failure 26 Sep 2023 (Forum)
Would appreciate your opinions/thoughts.  Story in short: very happy owner of Volvo XC90 (really happy), diesel. Car was bought second hand from volvo dealer, full service history from volvo, 6 years old in Nov 2023, just 50k mileage.  Problem: high pressure diesel pump died while driving. Volvo on-call was very helpful.
  • Changing a pick-up engine - which one? 16 Sep 2014 (Ask HJ)

  • Honda Civic - Suitable replacement for Nissan Qashqai? 5 Nov 2012 (Ask HJ)

  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 97 1.8 Diesel expert opinion needed please :-) 30 Jan 2010 (Forum)
However, first thing in the morning (cold), on starting, it fires once and then continues to crank for up to a miniute (sometimes longer, thank goodness for the new battery) slowly getting faster and faster and faster until it eventually fires and runs. I put some clear hose into the diesel return line and found some air bubbles (not a lot mind you). I have now run a clear diesel hose from the priming pump outlet direct to the diesel injection pump inlet. I notice that air bubbles appear to be coming out of the pump exit spigot into the hose.
  • Ford C-MAX (2003 - 2010) - Any views/opinions please? 3 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I am looking at the likes of the Verso, the C-Max and so on because they allow me to feel comfortable and safe in the driver's seat as opposed to cramped and too near the metal. I am against diesels for health reasons but have to admit the 1.6 and 1.8 Ford diesels do seem very economical and I am told that they are the most refined diesels on the market - hate diesel clatter also - and the VED is low on them compared to both the diesel and petrol Verso VED...

Airbag light The Airbag warning comes on when I'm cruising at around 3000 revs when warmed up. Any ideas? Is point 1 related to the fuel filter or pump? Are points 2 and 3 related? I plan to change my 'Glow Plugs' tomorrow Many thanks, Jim

  • Oil labelling explained 6 Nov 2010 (Forum)
If you want a better more up to date oil specification then look for SL, SM, CH4, CI4 ACEA This is the European equivalent of API (US) and is more specific in what the performance of the oil actually is. A = Petrol, B = Diesel and C = Catalyst compatible or low SAPS (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur). Unlike API the ACEA specs are split into performance/application catagories as follows: A1 Fuel economy petrol A2 Standard performance level (now obsolete) A3 High performance and/or extended drain A4 Reserved for future use in certain direct injection engines A5 Combines A1 fuel economy with A3 performance B1 Fuel economy diesel B2 Standard performance level (now obsolete) B3 High performance and/or extended drain B4 For direct injection car diesel engines B5 Combines B1 fuel economy with B3/B4 performance C1-04 Petrol and Light duty Diesel engines, based on A5/B5-04 low SAPS, two way catalyst compatible.
  • Diesel injection pump replacement - VEG OIL 20 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Yes, another one dreaming of the holy grail - free fuel forever , but I may have a case ? One of my cars is a US Ford F250 pick up truck of 1986 vintage, with an International 6.9 V8 diesel ( factory standard, this engine ) . Now, this is used sparingly as it's big around London's streets and on a limited mileage policy.
