Peugeot 206 - Returning a used car and refusing repairs? 8 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Hi all, I bought a Peugeot 206 Roland Garros 1.4 automatic 2000 reg about 2 weeks ago from a local garage/dealer. Cost me £2,200, looked to be in great condition, had 60k miles on clock and had MOT done after deposit. Just a few days later I started noticing problems (which I should have reported there and then, but lets not dwell on past mistakes). -
Mazda Mazda 5 7-str (2005 - 2010) - Mini-test of facelift Mazda 5 4 Jan 2009 (Forum)
The main difference is the additional of a five speed autobox instead of a four speed. (In the UK, the old model had no automatic and I think held up sales). The car we had over the Christmas break was superb. We did about 1,000 miles including a long drive from the north through the Negev desert to the Red Sea resort of Eilat. -
Glass's Guide E39 5 Series values 21 Jul 2006 (Forum)
For this example, I will use a 2002/52 plate 530i Sport. With 42k miles, a 52 plate 530i Sport Automatic trade books at £14175. A manual trade books at £12500. With 100k miles, more my sort of thing, the price is £9975 and £8875 So, from this I decude that manuals are NOT sought after and this is reflected in the residuals. -
Moving Big Things.... 22 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Difficulties also arise for hauliers in identifying exactly who to contact prior to moving a load due to changes to contact details, de-trunking orders and area boundaries. The site offers an on-line mapping system for hauliers to plan their route, and will automatically generate an up-to-date list of the authorities they need to contact. These easily identifiable contacts will ensure more accurate notifications, safer movements and help to simplify the current system. -
My scariest motoring experience to date 4 Jan 2006 (Forum)
All was well until the road which leads down ("down" being the operative word here) into the town. I was driving SWMBO's car which is an automatic Nissan Almera and I've not driven a FWD car on the snow for years. "Look at that car in front" pipes up a small boy in the back. "He's swerving all over the place!". At that moment, I lost control of the car, despite remembering something which Sir Jackie Stewart saying about one of his sons stuffing a car on a snowy slope because he didn't know about putting the car into "2" instead of "D" in such conditions. -
Do we molly-coddle cars ? 12 Dec 2002 (Forum)
My cars get serviced when something doesn't work or they don't run right; they get an oil change if and when they get a service; virtually any noise can be ignored or covered by increased cd player volume and you get used to it in time anyway; the brake discs would need to be in pieces before they got renewed; the punctured tyre gets replaced on its own, the others can get used to it and who gives a stuff what angle the steering wheel is at as long as the thing goes in straight lines, except when you would prefer it turned corners; as long as the car is level and not making bangs, then the suspension is clearly ok; if it gets a wash, which frankly isn't that likely, it'll get the nearest, convenient automatic car wash and be grateful for it; it gets petrol from whichever pump I stopped next to from whichever gas station I happened to be near when the fuel light started flashing; and if I need to start it cold, move it 2 ft and switch it off again it can damn well get over itself and start again when I need it whether the cat likes it or not. -

Am I alone in this discussion group in thinking these statements taken in isolation (and possibly out of context) are not unreasonable. I don't want to automatically dismiss these statements as totally anti-car (though they may be meant that way). In the interest of stimulating some discussion, my own thoughts are: 1. Cars are a good thing, if used appropriately can be enjoyed by those that wish to use them well into the future. -
X5 - what's it for? 8 Jun 2002 (Forum)
I have previously described the boss's BMW X5 as a ridiculous machine but I got a chance to have an extended ride in the front passenger seat when we did a round trip from Scotch Corner to Reading. It's a 3 litre sport automatic with black rear windows and the optional monster wheels. We set off round the Scotch Corner roundabout like it was a 5th gear road test with VBH at the wheel, and settled into a steady cruise at 95-100 mph down the A1. -
Have things gotten this bad in the UK courts yet? 12 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Terrence Dickson of Bristol, Pennsylvania, was leaving a house he had just finished robbing by way of the garage. He was not able to get the garage door to go up because the automatic door opener was malfunctioning. He couldn't re-enter the house because the door connecting the house and garage locked when he pulled it shut. The family was on vacation. Mr. Dickson found himself locked in the garage for eight days. -
ID3 initial impressions. 26 Sep 2025 (Forum)
It’s as quick to accelerate as a GTi yet smooth as an S class. There’s no noisy combustion motor up front rattling away and no complex automatic gearbox - it’s a battery and a big electric motor. It’ll cost buttons to fuel, and it cost nearly £20,000 less than its new price at less than 3yrs old with 18,000 miles up and it looks like a new car. -
VW Polo - Advice Needed For The Best Possible Outcome 6 Apr 2024 (Forum)
Hi, I'll try to keep a very long story short. You will clearly see I am not in the slightest mechanically minded! We bought a VW Polo Automatic 2012 plate (£9500) as our Son's first car from a second hand car dealer. Within 3 months it suffered catastrophic engine failure. The rods pushed a hole in the side of the engine. The AA transported the vehicle back to the dealer on my instruction. -
Used Car Under £4k 5 Jun 2023 (Forum)
Just looking for a bit of advice on my next car please...I hope this doesn't get lengthy...apologies if it does! Budget = £4k Must be automatic (I can drive manuals and have one now but want an auto) Comfort/luxury is important Definitely not interested in a small car (no Fiesta's, Corsa's, Micra's etc) I would love a Jag (after a bit of research I'd be looking at an XF I think and it seems it would be a very good idea to avoid an X-type because of the quality/faultsbut happy to listen to your thoughts) or a Merc (I had a C180 Kompressor Sport a good few years ago and it was great but at the time the fuel costs were an issue) - one of my concerns for getting a Jag I've never owned one and I don't have bottomless pockets so upkeep is a slight concern. -
Punto Van 1.3 Multijet ( temp return ex oilrag) - End of the Punto Van era ( 10yrs on (ex oilrag) 6 Dec 2020 (Forum)
I remember meeting a man who, seeing my obvious dedication to the ‘vehicle of the time’ told me “ the car is here to serve you. and not you the car” Of course, being the car enthusiast I was, I laughed at that, and continued serving the car as though, perhaps it was on an alter in some mysterious realm where touching it up with a Halfords paint tin, actually came before dinner... I’d sort of ‘automatically’ moved on from that in the last days of the van, as though it were some intrinsic survival mechanism- perhaps generated by these somewhat oldish bones being subjected to cold flagstones. I set a cut off point at 70yrs, for self car servicing, that is. -
Audi Q2 - a year and a bit 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Things worth having: Lumbar support; heated front seats (for SWMBO); power tailgate (well worth having, not least so that you can open it remotely and find the car in a car park); rear view camera; automatic high-beam assist; space-saver spare wheel; auto hill hold; and auto-dimming rear-view mirror (the last two shouldn't have been extras). I went for, but not sure I would again, the Tech Pack with the 'virtual cockpit': the main screen is atop the dashboard and angled towards the driver, so having the same map in front of you isn't much of a bonus. -
Multiple - Thoughts / opinions on the listed car ads 2 Mar 2019 (Forum)
2) https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201902114833607 Another Auto Honda Jazz. I don't particularly require an automatic. But I am open to a change, after driving manuals for the last 22 years. Also I understand that in theory a CVT gearbox can provide optimal fuel economy, that cannot be easily matched by an average driver. -
Cadillac innovations 19 Aug 2018 (Forum)
Cadillac's chief engineer was sufficiently intrigued to take him on, and after 1.5 million test miles, the 1929 Cadillac's debuted with the system. 1930, First production V16 engine. 1941, Fully automatic transmission. Though this actually debuted on an Oldsmobile the year before, it was a Cadillac employee (Earl A Thompson, again) who developed it. 1952, The 'Autronic eye'. This was a device which detected the headlights of oncoming vehicles and dipped the headlights. -
from a big v6 to a small diesel - HELP! 7 Aug 2012 (Forum)
So, for anyone still awake Im looking for something small and comfortable, costing between £4 and 8 thousand and less than 5/7 years old. Ideally automatic (Im a lazy sod). And ideally with all the little comforts such as a stereo that doesn’t sound awful at high volume, lights and wipers that work by themselves, nice seats etc. My shortlist is: Mercedes A200 Avantgarde (a handbag on wheels?) -
Jeep Grand Cherokee 2006 5.6l Hemi auto. - How compliant must I have been to use SOGA? 10 Dec 2010 (Forum)
I parked on the road that night, and when I came to start the car in the morning, it refused to engage a gear of any sort (automatic). I called the AA, who ran diagnostics but could only reset warnings and get it into 'limp home' mode (3rd gear). They drove it round the block like this (a few hundred yards), and we came to the conclusion that it needed to be got to a garage. -
KIA Picanto (2004 - ) - Initial report 5 Sep 2008 (Forum)
All id say is, if your used to quick cars and you liek them that way, dont buy one, but otherwise, its a great automatic city car with decent out of town ability aswell. -
Heathrow T5 high tech carpark - the future ? 4 Dec 2007 (Forum)
VMS minimises queuing and congestion by delivering electronic messages in the form of arrows to direct customers around the car park. In addition, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) will be used to ensure a swift and efficient entry/exit to the car parks for those customers who have pre-booked. On their return to the Short Stay car park, an additional feature has been designed to assist customers in locating their vehicles. ?
