  • A class Mercedes-best buy ? 4 Apr 2001 (Forum)
There seem a lot of "new" ones advertised by non Mercedes sources. Any tips on where to buy. Two Questions 1. I would like a detachable tow hitch which was an (expensive)option on the Golf as we tow five or six times a year . It is a tidy solution to hide the tow-ball. Question : Can these type of hitches be retro-fitted or is it a factory only option. 2.

  • Wifes' car doesn't exist! 18 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Hi all, My wife needs a new car, but her list of requirements are I believe impossible to match: - 5 proper seats - large enough for her artwork (ie rear seats must fold or must be an estate). Artwork is as large as 4"x3". - ideally wants a softtop - should be capable of towing a caravan. I haven't seen any car that is a 5-seater convertible large enough to tow. Any ideas? Thanks Mark
  • Motorhome Towing a Car Legalities 27 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Gave the Triumph Sprint an airing this afternoon in the lovely weather and came up behind a large motorhome towing a very small Suzuki car. The car was bearing the rear registration number of the motorhome and its rear lights also seemed to be linked up to those of the towing vehicle. Anyway as I overtook I saw that the car was on its 4 wheels and had some sort of drawbar arrangement.
  • Change in Breakdown Service 3 Jul 2005 (Forum)
No doubt there is cover where I can be towed anywhere, which used to be the case, but you can bet that they want even more money for that!!! My wife had an accident last Novmeber where the car couldn't be driven. They wanted £140 to tow the car home, and wouldn't even come out unless you pay up front with a credit card.
  • 4 x 4 options 31 Mar 2007 (Forum)
After weighing up options suggested in my previous discussion on what vehicle to tow a one horse trailer and horse, I am now in a quandary as to what 4x4 diesel to buy. I want the smallest vehicle capable of towing a minimum of 1500kg, with the most economical fuel consumption, as I clock up a fair mileage.
  • BMW X3 E83 SUV : 3.0 Sport: 2004/ 04 - Towing with an X3 - do I need to uprate the coolin 16 Mar 2010 (Forum)
Why does nobody else mention this? Am I being led up the garden path here? I would have expected the braked towing figure to be pull'able by the car as described in the manual without any changes. I dont know what to do. Can you help? Thanks, Rodw
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 00 1.8 TDDi Non Starter 17 Aug 2009 (Forum)
The car will start on easy-start and will tow off as well, however emitting white/gray smoke after towing. He believes it may be a problem with the injectors. Has anyone else had an issue with the injectors or glow plugs after a timing belt failure?
  • Impounding law? 5 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Does the council have any authority to tow the car away due to the amount of unpaid fines? Or if not, does it have the authority to tow the car away for having been on a 1 hour parking area for just 2 hours extra? Bear in mind that a car on the other side of the road received a ticket, but it has not been removed...
  • Get hitched, without a b+e test 16 Sep 2021 (Forum)
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/new-rules-for-towing-a-trailer-or-caravan-with-a-car-from-autumn-2021 I know many will likely trumpet the health and safety implications. Personally I do not think drivers passing their tests on or after 1st January 1997 were any less capable of towing than those passing prior to that date and it was an unnecessary hindrance.
  • Transit Axle Ratio 16 Apr 2005 (Forum)
There are 2 choices of rear axle ratio:- 3.77 and 4.27, each giving a different GTM. I have been told that one ratio would be better for towing and the other better for motorway travel. Can anyone advise me as to which ratio would be better for a motorhome and why? I am not planning on doing any towing. Thank you for any help you can give.

  • Toyota Avensis Recall 1 Nov 2012 (Forum)
I have received a recall notice from Toyota concerning problems regarding Tow-Bar fittings, Seemingly the ball joint can crack causing failure. I called local Toyota dealer to inform them that my car has and never has had a Tow-Bar fitted and can they complete the paperwork accordingly so that VOSA can update their database.

  • Do you carry your V5 with you? 5 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I don't suppose you do. So what when you're away from home and your car is towed - and you have to produce driving licence, V5 and proof of address. Westminster (see previous thread) didn't seem to care too much when they towed my friend's car; despite giving a long list of required documents - but she had her driving licence with her.
  • Theft Insurance 17 Mar 2003 (Forum)
My daughter's coverage is TPFT only and my questions are: Is she covered for the damage? The car has been towed to a local garage for inspection by the police and she's concerned that she'll have to pay the towing charges. Is this correct? Thanks in advance
  • TOWCARS 30 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I am thinking of changing my Citroen Xantia 1.8lx but need something capable of towing my touring caravan. I only use the caravan approx 4 times a year with the furtherest distance travelled being around 250 miles. Therefore i normally opt for petrol models rather than deisel for the better performance whilst not towing.
  • Skoda Octavia Estate - In a quandary but a nice one 14 Apr 2019 (Forum)
in 2011 we planned to go caravanning around the EU for a few times and other things so bought a 2008 citroen C5 diesel auto. It was perfect for the job. Towing it got around 20-25 mpg, free from the van 45-50 mpg. Lovely jubbly. We also tow a heavy trailer with wood maybe once/twice a month as well. But now its getting on a bit, only 80k miles tho and we have now sold the caravan, ( but still tow wood occasionally).
  • Hyundai Santa Fe - Thermo-dynamics of diesel automatics 19 Nov 2013 (Forum)
A question for a thermo-dynamics expert. I have a Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2CRDi automatic which is used for towing, but well within it's towing limit - as standard a transmission cooler is fitted but it's of the loop-in-radiator-bottom-tank type - I use a ScanGauge 2 to monotor the engine coolant temperature via the EOBD2 diagnostics port.
  • Honda CG 125 - Platform for a Honda on a campervan 28 Aug 2012 (Forum)
I’ve had the idea to make a bike platform that can mount on the tow bracket of the van (its plenty strong enough) above the hitch – and therefore have a small bike available as paddock bike, for popping to the shops etc.   I need to be able to access the tow hitch while it is in place to remove the trailer if necessary which should be manageable, but the real problem is the width of the bike across the bars – it means the platform will have to stick out a couple of feet which is getting rather too close to the front of the car on the trailer when on full lock.
