Veg oil in your tank 13 Jul 2001 (Forum)
The thing people might note about this is that the test, getting from Hamburg to Alicante on Aldi supermarket's salad oil, involved using an old diesel Golf that had covered nearly 500,000 km - about 300,000 miles - and the engine had done about 250,000 km . The author tested other oils too - fish oil stank too much and corn oil produced clouds of smoke. -
Ford Focus III 2.0tdci ghia - intermittent loss of power 16 Nov 2013 (Forum)
My brother has exactly the same spec of car as me, same year, just a different colour, he uses the local supermarket fuel and has encountered no problems. they have suggested that the vehicle be recovered back to the dealership without starting it as fault codes are erased when the engine is re-started. i am more than convinced they will magically find the fault when my warranty expires. i have also been in touch with Ford customer services, they have logged a call and given me a refference number but are not really able to help other than this. -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 01 2.0 HDi Fault code P0230 Limp Mode 16 Mar 2010 (Forum)
800 M development costs for HDi and 4 years work by two major companies. You think PSA could manage more than 77K without engine trouble. A normal diesel could ! At least design an ECU diagnosis system that can tell you the exact problem, or support DIY diagnosis without all this dealer analyser rubbish. Rant over. I have to get the bus to the supermarket. -
£8k family hack - your advice welcome 4 Apr 2007 (Forum)
A diesel engine Ideally no more than 70k ish on the clock (we'll keep it for a few years) Nothing with inherently expensive "known" problems. Budget £8k Liking the look so far of: Renault Grand Scenic 1.9 dCi 120 - Budget seems realistic for an 04 plate with 70k or so on the clock. 7 seats not a must, but we like the huge boot it gives when 3rd seat row folded. -
Car Hypermarket Experience 27 Aug 2006 (Forum)
To avoid naming and shaming I won't specify the region I live in or the particular car I was looking for, but let's just say I've been looking out for a certain diesel warm hatch for a few weeks now. With bank loan finalised and cash burning a hole in my bank account, I spotted a promising example at a car hypermarket (not a HJ advertiser I might add) some 30 miles down the road and thought I would go and take a look. -
Any - Does Start/Stop Technology Really Save any Money? 23 Jun 2014 (Forum)
By deploying this to just one 'mid price range' model with the smaller 1.2 litre VTEC engine, Honda have managed to sucessfully get an official European Test Cycle result of 120 gm per km - the 'magic' threshold, which all modern supermini and makers of quite large turbo-diesel limousines strive to achieve, in what is are very competitive but contrasting segments of the european car market. My questions are as follows: (A) Does the additional initial cost of adding this technology really pay for itself over the long haul ? -
2yrs on from buying a 9yr old dpf-equipped diesel 10 Sep 2019 (Forum)
A long while ago, I promised/threatened to give regular updates on buying and running a 9yr old dpf-equipped diesel. Coming up to the 2yr anniversary now, so this is long overdue. The following is the facts, purely objective. What did I buy? 2008 Renault Koleos 2.0dci 4WD manual - 173bhp version, Privilege trim. -
Citroen c5 HDi VTR+Nav Saloon 2010 plate - Could you tell me who is at fault here please? 18 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Hi everyone, grab a coffee, this could take a bit... I bought this car with 16k on the clock 11 months ago from a well known car supermarket. The car performed effortlessly and without a single issue until June this year (2012). On starting the car early in the morning, the 'STOP - Low oil Pressure' light came on. Engine sounded perfect, oil up to the mark. -
Not an objective test........ 22 Oct 2001 (Forum)
(and that wasn't my fault whatever you hear, it was a stupid place to leave a hole). Freelander - I hope its good in supermarket carparks, because its naff-all good for anything else. Small unsupportive seats allowing you to be thrown around and a small under-powered gutless engine. (This one was a year old, so I know there are V6 & Diesel stuff about now which *must* be better). -
Toyota Prius not rubbish to drive shock! 30 Jul 2009 (Forum)
At the end of my 2 day rental the Prius had achieved 42 mpg (US) average according to the trip computer, when I filled up it was actually a bit less than that, so approaching diesel economy without the rattles and turbo lag. Plus, with the screen and the electric mode there is an incentive even for someone as pathologically lead footed as me to drive economically. Apart from the apparent economy benefits, I can? -
Roadtest : Avantime 20 Jul 2002 (Forum)
The boot is enormous, swallowing three 75l rucksacks and several day bags easily along with the traditional supermarket fayre of water and snacks. It's got a bar along the lines of the C3 to split into two, but as with the C3 I thought this was pointless. I really liked the climate control setting, where the driver and passenger had their own settings, controlled by a small console with just + & - and a display of the selected temperature.
