Luton or Dagenham? Ford or Vauxhall?? 1 Mar 2014 (Forum)
Cool in your Cavalier or ecstatic in your Escort, we could go on and on unlike most of the cars of the 60's & 70's. It would seem the loyalty shown to both brands was indeed very strong and where car making no longer occurs at Dagenham loyalty to the blue oval carries on and if course as a centre of excellence in diesel engine technology Dagenham lives on in the current diesel range of cars. -

VW Golf MK5 DSG Estate - VW Golf MK5 DSG High Rev's on Some Gear Changes 6 Aug 2013 (Forum)
I also have paddle shift, if I force a change in 3rd at 2000 rpm into 4th it changes no problem and holds there until it goes back into auto mode and then it reverts back to 3rd gear again and will hold until 2300ish rpm. In sport 'S' mode the change happens from 3rd to 4th at about 2500 rpm so much higher so no issue about either me or the car being in 'S' by mistake. This is really annoying as it only happens occasionally. -

Fiat Panda Multijet 2006 - Suitable fault code reader 3 Jan 2013 (Forum)
However, an old f*** like me grappling with modern automotive electronics would be like a chimpanzee trying to do brain surgery. On the 60's and 70's vehicles I was brought up on, the most complex electronic component was an SU fuel pump. But the need for fuel economy and the fact that all the old cars are worn out has forced us to buy a modern one. -

America - Pollution 28 Jul 2010 (Forum)
In one particular town almost every vehicle was a 4x4 on steroids & when they were parked next to a BMW X5 it made the BMW look like a dinky toy & most of there 4x4's are V8+ and 5.7 ltr upwards !!!!! On American TV everynight in the Hotels was BP & the spill all night everynight! now I do sympathise with the spill & it should never of happened & if it did a contingency plan should of been in place BUT the American goverment approved the drilling in the first place & they still allow then to run around in 5-10 ltr 4x4's by the million. -
Swallows fly faster on the Cape UK route 3 Jun 2010 (Forum)
`Dang` - (you would shout to the Cockerill who was eyeing you up from the fence - waiting his chance) "I`m not up for it" Cos it`s best to be light and fast as you fly over the Sahara - or it`s a crash landing and no chance of rising Phoenix like out of the ashes on one engine. - You might manage a cough, but a koffman starter, you have not. -
Report from the Leyte Gulf - philippines 26 Mar 2010 (Forum)
It`s not as though I`m an unknown name is it? So it had to be done purposefully surely? So who did it? I`m not looking for an apology, just a hands up - as deleting several interesting and well meaning posts in one go, without comment is not really on, is it? -

Turbo engines suffer double the failure rate 8 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I was reading a report today in Which that (according to Warranty direct) the average incidence rate for engine failure is 11.3%- but with turbocharged engines the failure rate is 27.8%. That?s more than double. (Why read it in 'Which?' when it's here: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/item.htm?id=35547.) The cost of engine failure repair also increases, from an average £619 overall to £875 for turbocharged cars. -
The trunkating of mechanical adventures 14 Nov 2009 (Forum)
You just can`t get that feeling of `adventure` back, can you? in modern motoring, that is. Those trips up to Scotland in the 60`s. Shap Fell in third gear, being happy that you could get up at 40mph. The little tribulations with points and the sticking piston in the SU carb. No mobile phones for help and driving along those single track roads in the Western Highlands. -
Volkswagen Passat (1997 - 2000) - 97 1.6 brake problems!! please help.... 13 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Hi i have a passat 1.6, its done 124K, the other day i was driving down the motorway at about 70mph and i had a sudden loss of power, only seemed to drive in 3rd gear, came off next junction and noticed loads of smoke coming from the o/s rear wheel, so pulled over into layby, i could hardly the drive the car as the seemed like the brakes were totally seized on. I waited 5 hours, the car has cooled down, then it drove o.k at low speeds back home. -
Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - To sell or not to sell. Decision time!! 12 Mar 2009 (Forum)
My concern with the private sale route is that people seem to get scared if a car has done more than 40k miles, whatever its age! PArt two of my thread is to recommend something fun, but not ridiculous (no XJS V12's) to replace it for around the same money. Maybe one of the above, or a Cooper S?
