Old designs a british speciality? 4 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I thought of Bristol, Morgan, Caterham, MG ( in its day it was selling quite well despite very ancient R25/45 models ), Reliant ( the Robin was killed off not because there wasnt demand but the EU legislation caused mounting costs in development to meet the new rules - the factory for the BN models still exists and production could be restarted if an investor came in ), Bentley Arnage and even the Mini lasted well past its sell by date. What is it about British cars that people find so endearing, that they will buy very outdated designs, usually for huge prices? Do we really put as much soul into cars as the italians do, in an english sort of way? -
Renault Clio 1.2 n reg. wet engine 27 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Anyone know if the engine should have a splash panel or the like to prevent this happening. Is there anything I can do to prevent this. I know in my old mini I used to tie a piece of plastic to the inside of the grille. -
Auto Express Tyre Test 22 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I'm aware that there's tread between the said markers but they must have some effect. It seems to me that they are like having mini bald patches on your tyres. It would be interesting to conduct the same tests with these removed to prove/disprove their effects. Yes they're convenient but are they a liability? Any thoughts? Steve. --- Xantia HDi Exclusive. -
vehicle memories from 1953 4 Jul 2006 (Forum)
A conservative estimate that only 25 years of oil at then current rate of consumption from known resources remained. Bond mini car 197cc £275. 85 mpg @45 mph. Austin A 30 £475 14s 2 d. 50 MPG @30 MPH. Standard 8 £481 7s 6d. 55 mpg@ 30 mph. Morris minor11 £529 10s 10d. 41mpg @50 mph. The return of branded petrol to Britain, but attendants with skates were only an ephemeral gimmick (picture with ESSO extra shown & lady attendant with said skates) -- rustbucket (the original) -
Two cars to one. 23 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Wife has a smart cabrio - good for her daily commute and parking in urban areas - cabrio good fun in summer. They need something between the two. Have considered a Mini Cooper S. Convertible Pluses - still quite small so easy to park, still a cabrio, good for longer journeys. Negatives - really only a two seater, small boot (they don't want to use the van for shopping), £20,000 price tag. -
Carte blanche 21 Mar 2005 (Forum)
The only real criteria are that it has five doors and an engine, but it would also be nice if it cost less than £3k and was not too barge-like. I think mid-size is preferable to mini (and likely to be better value) and my happy experience with the family Mazda makes me look favourably upon 323's and similar. I like my old Audi, too, but I cheerfully admit to bias, which is why I'm asking you lot... -
Home for Clio? 11 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Would break my heart to pay someone to take it away and scrap it as it's only one repair away from being useful to someone. Any advice much appreciated. -- Lee MINI adventure in progress -
Alfa Romeo Styling/Extras specialist? 28 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Managed to pick it up for £7000 which I think was very reasonable. Anyway, i did get substantially more for my Mini so I would like to make a few modifications to the Alfa - upgrade the wheels, stereo, add a nice alfa bodykit possibly, etc.. Does anyone know of a good styling/accessory specialist i could use, preferably online? -
Lumpy, rusting Micra 22 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Secondly, it is jerky in traffic in first and second gear, being hard to drive slowly as if it is either on or off. It reminded me of my old Mini which was like this - is this a common fault and due to the fuel injection programming, as I have heard? Is there any way around this? -
Foglights and xenons 3 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Mind you, most cars do look better with some extra glassware on the front (not those 'orrible bonnet spotlights on the MINI though). And if you're a real plonker you can leave the switch on so that whenever you turn your lights on you have your fogs on too, showing the world you're a hard man that really means business and dazzling oncomers (with your lights' brilliance, not yours). -
Safest Car on the Road 6 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Reading the mail this morning and it turns out that car your least likely to have a fatal accident in and with the lowest risk of having a any injury or any kind is a Land Rover Defender???!! The most unsafe car apparently is a mini which wasn't a suprise though. The research was done by the department for transport examining about 180,000 crashes. I have just mentioned this because it has been stated in previous threads that 4x4s are more unsafe than normal cars yet 7 out of 10 cars which were found to be the safest were 4x4s. -
the most INTERESTING sub-group 10 car? 8 Jan 2003 (Forum)
A few examples I thought of were as follows: Ford Puma 1.4/1.7 BMW 316i Sport Compact (1998/9) New MINI One/Cooper possibly New Ford Fiesta 1.4 A/C Zetec 3dr VW Lupo GTI 1.6/1.4 Sport Audi A3 1.6 Sport Renault Megane coupe or Clio? Basically I wouldnt mind something a bit exclusive and that does 0-60mph in around 10 seconds or less Any ideas? -
Bloody Indicate!!! 18 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Does anybody actually bother to use their indicators nowadays?! Picture what happened to me the other day. Approaching a mini roundabout intending to go straight ahead, hence no need to indicate, meanwhile another car travelling towards me is about to hit the rounabout and is not indicating, hence I presume he is also going straight over. -
Search for small car 2 Jun 2001 (Forum)
She likes both performance and economy, of course, and she's comfortable only in something in the super-mini bracket (a Golf is too large). Oh, yes, it needs to accommodate a set of golf clubs easily. She'll be after something 3--5 years old on a budget of c. 5k, I guess. All suggestions welcome. -
Mini Sony Nav-U70T satnav review 13 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I DID go to my room and think about what I've done, but now I've done that I'll let you know what it's like, as I couldn't find much in the way of reviews or other user reports, it being a new unit. So this is by way of a two day mini-first impression review, in case anyone is considering one. We preferred it to the Tom Tom unit. The screen was clearer somehow, and it's a nice looker. It probably doesn't have quite so many features as TomTom but to my mind that's an advantage. -
