Snow Chains and Hire Cars 8 Jan 2007 (Forum)
I pointed out that as chains are obligatory in mountain areas and other car hire companies I have used in skiiing areas provide them automatically I shouldn't have to ask in a skiing area in January for equipment that can be expected to be needed to make the car legal to drive nor make a special check to see that they have been provided. -
Diesel/auto estate -suggestions please! 3 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Needs to be an estate, and probably on the large side, I checked out kerbweights/towing limits of primera/avensis size cars and they are approaching 100% of the caravan max weight - Caravan Club recommend only towing 85% of weight of car, and def. not more than 100% of car weight. Car needs to be automatic as my mother often uses my vehicle, and she will only drive auto, and I do a huge amount of town driving as well. and prob diesel too as I am spending far too much on petrol even in my little corolla at the moment. -
Change Volvo for A-Class 23 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Alternatively, I could take over my wife's CR-V and get her a Hyundai Trajet - lots of good deals around at present and they do a diesel automatic - once the baby arrives and we go to London to visit family with the kitchen sink in the boot. The CR-V is three years old and has only 9,000 miles; we bought it last November with less than 4,000 miles. -
More like this please 23 Oct 2003 (Forum)
In total 49 vehicles were stopped, 10 people were issued fixed penalty tickets for £200 for driving without insurance and 10 for other matters. Around 30 officers were involved in the operation, which used automatic number plate recognition technology to match number plates to central police records in seconds, allowing officers to pull aside offenders. Customs and Excise and Magistrates Court Service officers were also present and collected unpaid fines from offenders. -
Grannie's Clutch Judder 25 May 2002 (Forum)
Graham wants to keep the car for a few more years but is getting tired of messing about with the clutch cable. At one time, when the car was a couple of years old, he asked if it could be converted to automatic transmission but we decided against that on cost grounds. Today he asked if it could be converted to hydraulic clutch operation but I felt that this would be quite difficult. I suggested avoiding the sharp bend by splitting the cable in two and having a bell-crank at the point of the bend, but on second thoughts, this would also be difficult and time-consuming. -
Please help me choose a diesel estate car 25 Feb 2013 (Forum)
I’d like features like SatNav, Xenon headlights, heated Leather seats, and I am sure my wife would really like another Automatic, but they seem to be prone to more problems than a standard. I wouldn’t mind another Mondeo, but would like something different than what I already own. -
Do I need a 4x4 and if so PHEV, MHEV or diesel? 26 May 2024 (Forum)
Most of the local farmers drive pick up trucks, I have had one before but am no longer lugging hay bales. I am looking to spend up to 25k, prefer an automatic due to a knee injury and happy to buy anywhere nationwide. What cars would you recommend? -
Suzuki Vitara - High pitched sound when driving 24 Apr 2024 (Forum)
Hi, Looking for some help diagnosing my issue. I recently bought a 2018 Suzuki Vitara S All Grip Automatic and a few days later it developed a noise when driving. The closest thing I can compare the noise to is a high pitched whistle/buzzing on a phone line. The sound becomes more prominent at faster speeds > 50 mph and also once the car is warmed up (driving for 20+ mins). -

Ford confirms fire-breathing Ranger Raptor pickup for UK 7 Sep 2018 (Forum)
It will go on sale in Britain next summer. The engine drives the pick-up through the same ten-speed automatic gearbox ( Vi Khang )as its American equivalent, the Ford F-150 Raptor. To ensure optimum performance in any conditions, drivers have six different modes – two for on-road use, and four for off-road driving. -
Kia Venga 1.6 2012 - Best way to drive a torque converter auto 2 Jun 2018 (Forum)
I've had my Venga 1.6 2012 since February and this may be a numpty question but can anyone suggest the "correct" way to drive a TC automatic. Let me explain: I understand how a TC box works and specifically on the Kia it uses a Torque Converter mated to a 4 speed gearbox using standard planetary gea***t. The gear selector has 1, 2 and D. -
Honda CR-V Suzuki Vitara - Honda CRV or save cash on a Vitara? 11 May 2018 (Forum)
I’ve been looking for a suitable family car for the last few months and have now seen two cars which I think might fit my requirements.. The first is a Honda CR-V 1.6 SR automatic, 65 plate with 20k miles. It’s a nice, plush feeling motor which drives smoothly with nice auto box and bags of space. Alternatively, I could save myself £3500/4000 on the same year and mileage 1.4 booster jet Suzuki Vitara. -
Honda Civic - Honda Civic Showroom launch 21 Feb 2017 (Forum)
The array of safety features on all but the base model is impressive with adaptive cruise, blind spot monitoring, collision avoidance and so on. A lot to go wrong as the car ages. The electric hand brake seems to offer manual and automatic operation options. Again probably OK for the first buyer but I'd prefer the old mechanical system. Only a simple brochure was available so I couldnt check out stuff like wheel and tyre options but I suspect the 16" has been dropped and they are all 17/18". -
vauxhall zifira B (57 plate) - torque app or ecu please help 2 Jul 2016 (Forum)
Hi There Im Just wondering if anyone could help, i just purchased a zifira b (on a 57 plate) over a week ago off a private seller, which seemed in good nick, anyway after a couple of days driving the car i noticed the dreaded engine light appear on the dashboard of the car, and i noticed that the ashtray was missing from under the handbrake which sent red flags flying, so instead getting someone to check in the garage i decided to give it a go at getting a bluetooth obdll connector and plugged it into the connector in the car and i downloaded the torque app from google playstore but i kept on having problems establishing a connection wirelessly or by blue tooth so i went onto amazon and got a op-com usb diagnostics scanner and i made sure i had the micro adapter so i could plug it into my galaxy s5 neo smartphone, it automatically started torque as soon as i connected it but i keep getting the same error message all the time, which is really frustrating because i have triad messing with the settings etc, i am a pretty tech person most of the time, ((No Response From The OBD Adapter,Did You Select The Right Baud Rate)) Could anyone please tell me where i am going wrong or if theres another problem somewhere,?? -
VW Touran 12plate Auto - 12 plate VW Touran Auto Gearbox gone 3 months 27 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Hi, I'm trying to help a family friend who bought a VW Touran Automatic 12 plate. He bought the car in August'15 and in November'15, just after 3 months, the Auto gearbox went, it has a full VW service history and next service is not due till next month. I believe it has only done 17,000 miles. -
2014 Hyundai Accent - Speed bump whoops! What is damaged? 12 Aug 2014 (Forum)
I am waiting for the hire car company to bring me a replacement but am curious as to what damage is likely to have been done. Any suggestions in this regard? It's an automatic so maybe the transmission or torque converter got bashed (hence the grinding/crunching noise when driving), The tires seem undamaged and the car seems to sit level and flat, but perhaps the suspension system or something on the wheels got bent too (although surely the tyres would pop first)? -
VW Passat 1.9 Tdi 2004 AVF engine - VW Passat will not start 29 May 2014 (Forum)
Hello My car is a VW Passat 4motion 2004 with an AVF engine (3B6) I recently changed the fuel filter on the vehicle but did not prime the fuel filter (believing that the pump will automatically fill the unit similar to petrol engine- learned my lesson.) The car started and I drove it 30 meters down the road where the engine stopped presumably as the filter was empty. I tried starting the engine a number of times but it would not start until eventually the battery went flat. -
Toyota Avensis - 1.8 V-Matic thoughts/opinions 21 Apr 2014 (Forum)
I asked Honest John the following, and and advisor recommended the Avensis 1.8 pretrol V-Matic. Doing some reading I quite like the look of it. :) I quite fancy an automatic one (and/or possibly the estate version). Any opinions on these Avensis 1.8 V-Matic's for my requirements below (Reliable, Economical, Comfortable Family motorway cruiser)? Anything to look out for when viewing/test driving them? -
Reports of my rental car (again) 28 Mar 2013 (Forum)
We are back again and this time its a brand new Astra. As with most of the cars we rent, we are given 1.4 - 1.6 engined automatics unless the car is much smaller or larger (e.g the 107 or Sedona). The reason is that the local car tax rules favour such engine/gearbox combination. The Astra is typical. A perfectly pleasant car let down by a low power engine in a heavy body and a witless gearbox. -
Convince me! 18 May 2012 (Forum)
It'll be second hand - I'm thinking of one of the ones that has the 2.0 or 1.8 VVTi engines, an Automatic, about 2001-2003, up to about 4k. High mileage isn't a problem, because I understand that if it is properly maintained (like I have my Carina) it can easily take it. Please, please convince me that this Avensis will be as bulletproof as my Carina - that still flies.
