  • SAAB - Carbon deposits and sensors 9-3 2001 2.2 TiD 3 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Has anyone else got any suggestions as to what else they could look for as this sounds like more than the Saab main dealer was going to do for a third the price? Cheers, John p.s. Avoid supermarket fuel is the moral!
  • Buyer bites back! 8 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Went to a car supermarket yesterday, drove a very nice nissan primera 2.2 diesel. I didn't intend to purchase the car then & there, however I did intend to consider it overnight. After the test drive, the sales guy could clearly see that I liked the car, and proceeded to get me to sign on the dotted.
  • Chevrolet Epica - Chevrolet Epica diesel 1 year on 12 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Aug 2010, searching for a fairly economical to buy new-newish car, looked at brand new kia ceed, then saw hyundai i30 classics a lot cheaper and went to look at a car supermarket (Ron Skinners) where i had previously bought a chevrolet aveo for an old friend. saw the epica in stock, all ex-chevrolet cars in lovely condition and a very attractive price. went home and researched a bit, and found my car for £6745 at Pentagon, Sheffield, 7021 miles on clock when i bought car over the phone, bit disappointed at the time about the condition the car was delivered in, but faults fixed under warranty and dealer service in swansea (FRF) excellent.
  • I think we may have a shortlist 8 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Also might be a tad out of budget unless I get one that's been ragged to death. 3. A Renault Megan diesel. Probably the only car I could afford new as the car supermarkets are full of them. Just a bit concerned about Renault reliability although it ticks all the boxes for safety and is a little bit quirky. 4.
  • Six months of apparent DPF problems with an Astra 3 Sep 2013 (Ask HJ)
I have a 2012 Vauxhall Astra 1.7 diesel. It started to cut out in March 2013 and became unreliable. Vauxhall assistance (AA) said it was supermarket fuel....
  • Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi - Intermittant judder problems 40-60mph range 6 Aug 2022 (Forum)
The last 1,300+ miles have been run using BP or BP Ultimate Diesel rather than supermarket fuels in my own attempt to flush out any potential problems. Car still exhibits same symptoms.
  • DS 5 - Smoke from DS DS5 Diesel engine after a short run 16 Jan 2018 (Forum)
I've always filled it up with Shell V-Power Diesel.   Today I went on a short run of about 10 minutes to the supermarket, and back home again after about half an hour. The engine temperature guage didn't even register any heat on either part of the journey.

  • BMW 320d E46 engine 'flutter' 1 Nov 2011 (Ask HJ)

  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.8TDCi car cutting out at speed 10 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Car taken to a diesel specialist who said....The new fuel filter was a poor quality he had seen this problem on other cars so he fitted a new bosch filter. Over the past 3 weeks the car has been fine, so if it was ok before the filter was changed and has been ok after another filter has been fitted it seems almost certain the problem was down to a dodgy filter.
  • Continental Jottings 19 Mar 2009 (Forum)
This leaves one short of cash and wodering if it will work as a debit car when paying a bill at a shop or restaurant. 7. Excellent service from a well known UK supermarket in Calais. Ordered a shed load of drink on line; got a phone call fom them telling me about 2 items they couldn't supply and when I got to their shop my order was packed in a trolley, ready to be paid for (with a card that did work!)
  • Which Honda CR-V? 5 Jul 2015 (Ask HJ)

  • Hyundai i30 GDI Turbo petrol - Petrol particulate filters 25 Jun 2023 (Forum)
I promptly hit the motorway and  after 30 minutes, to my relief, the warning light eventually went out.   I’ve been using regular petrol (not supermarket) and I’m now going to switch to BP Ultimate with a weekly Italian tune-up on the motorway to keep the filter clear. In the circumstances, it seems to contradict the fuel saving devices fitted to the car.
  • Buying a new car - Volkswagen or Skoda? 19 Nov 2013 (Ask HJ)

  • Fun practical used car for £6-8k 14 May 2007 (Forum)
Running costs need to be reasonable, as does reliability. Most likely to buy from a car supermarket like Car Giant but wouldn't buy privately or blindly over the internet. So I was wondering if anyone can give me any further suggestions or ideas! Many thanks, Keith
  • Was I missold a car because it's not getting the mpg I was told? 22 May 2020 (Ask HJ)
What do the WLTP phases mean in real terms? Is the extra high phase just motorway driving? Basically, I bought a new Hyundai Kona 1.6 hybrid as I wanted...
  • What to buy? 29 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Budget £5-7k,annual mileage 25-30k, mainly motorway. My criteria are reliablity, fuel consumption, safety, and ease/cost of maintenance (I diy most things), in that order. Petrol or diesel, though prefer petrol.Image doesn't bother me.I'd like aircon too.I'm considering the following: Toyota Avensis, Subaru Forester, Legacy or Impreza (not the boy racer one), Ford Focus or Mondeo, Nissan Primera, anything else?
  • SAAB - SAAB 93, good opportunity or bad idea? 4 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Looking at 'the usual suspects' of cars such as Mondeo's, I have noticed that only one of the three main car supermarkets (Motorpoint) I normally look at have any 08/58 plate Mondeos, (Trade Sales and Car Giant are the others, our company is in the South East), but there are a lot of SAAB 93's. Most are Auto's (not good either for BiK or mpg) but there are a few 150hp diesel Linear SE's saloons at £11,800 and estates at £12,500.
  • Nissan Micra - 14 day French road test 27 Oct 2005 (Forum)
t see any driving that raised my eyebrows. If I may be permitted a non-motoring tip, French supermarkets no longer give out poly bags. We learned this the hard way when we popped into a supermarket and loaded up with supplies.
