  • 1999 Passat Electrics, niggles 17 Sep 2004 (Forum)
On their own, these aren't particularly troublesome, but all together, I'm starting to wonder whether there might be a wider ECU, fuse, or wiring issue to be concerned about. The car is five years old and has 114k miles up, if that's relevant. Any thoughts, suggestions or solutions will be gratefully received. -- andymc Vroom, vroom - mmm, doughnuts ...
  • Calling all engineers and web whizzos? 14 Oct 2002 (Forum)
My question is: What are the long-term effects of running cars designed to use UNLEADED on leaded fuel? Either in general terms or vehicle specific. Issues to consider might be: fuel injection system, ECU control of timing, combustion temps, combustion chamber materials, spark plugs, Lambda sensor. Some vehicles have an additional sensor in the catalyst itself ? what happens when that is removed/ disconnected (apart from a dashboard light coming on)?
  • Car has serious problem - HELP! 27 Jun 2002 (Forum)
IGNITION TIMING: The engine is falsely reading high charge temperatures and retarding the timing. This could be faulty ECU, or sensors. TURBO itself. Does'nt smoke or make a noise. But it is not unknown that a turbo could be hitting the sides of the housing at certain revs, creating a flow resistance but spinning correctly at higher or lower revs.
  • FIAT Grande Punto - Fiat GPunto starting problem, glow plugs 13 May 2014 (Forum)
Checked with a garage, they found code P0683 (pre-heat error) and said in most cases it's a harmless ECU error and I should not worry unless problems develop. Drove for 2 months with no problem. Then starting became more difficult with colder weather: it took more time, there was more and more white smoke.
  • Vauxhall Corsa CDTi 05 plate - V Bad fuel consumption + minor electrical niggles 26 Jan 2011 (Forum)
saved myself a couple thou).  Surely to god I would notice a leak like that.  I wondered does the ECU do anything with fuel (DH talks about the mix on his old escort when he was younger I know this is fuel v air - won't entertain cars now you can't tinker).  I wonder because I have had a series of minor and inconsistent electric blips.
  • Review Fiat Doblo 2002 JTD "the Fault-Master" 13 Apr 2010 (Forum)
It then either cut out on bends or the revs dropped so low that you thought it might - letting you imagine the main bearings kissing the crank at 500 revs. That SAt Nav failed at that point followed by the main ECU packing up. The clutch switch had to be disabled to stop stalling if put into neutral while moving. "You`re driving outside it`s design parameters"  commented the dealership and I was called in and advised I should be driving properly.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 02 1.8 Various electrical problems 13 Feb 2010 (Forum)
(Also engine service light was blinking). I then again removed the power from battery and loosened the connectors to the ECU. (Incase there was some dirt or similar there) Everything looked ok, put connectors back and tied again, after about 5s of turning the engine with the starter engine started. .******* So any ideas, Okay maybe I have 3 different problems here with my car the air condition then maybe some grounding problem and then maybe something with the anti theft protection.
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 96 1.7 Diesel. Wierd fault: fuel stop / cut off so 28 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I am wondering if the normal looking (as on most diesel cars of this age and older) cylindrical stop-solenoid is permanently stuck open or partially open and whether there is another solenoid (that the 3 wires go to, in the back of the pump), that stays open for at least 12-15 seconds after starting, even if you switch the ignition off again within that time. I can't think why it would need to do this, but presumably it's linked to an ecu or timer or immobiliser or something. When the normal stop-solenoid is working properly (ie closing as soon as the ignition is switched off), having the second solenoid staying open for 12-15 seconds wouldn't make any noticeable difference because the engine would just stop as expected when you switch off the ignition, due to the cylindrical one closing and cutting off the fuel.
  • MG 6 - Honda Civic - Honda Civic vs MG 6 - better value used car? 31 Oct 2017 (Forum)
Every day parts like service components could potentially still be sourced. in UK   How about more unusual components such as; ABS sensors, torque  sensors, steering rack, ECUs, body panels etc.  Is the chance that these parts need replacement so low, that they are made up by the low price of the car? 2) NCAP - 4 start rating.  Driver safety rating not top class.
  • Vauxhall Corsa C - Corsa C won’t start first attempt, but will second 28 Nov 2014 (Forum)
My friend tells me that if I disconnect the battery for an hour it should reset the ecu and sensors etc, in case this is the fault, however I don’t have the code for the radio, anywhere I can get this for free or reasonably cheap atleast? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • Peugeot 405 GL 1991 (carb) - Engine Cooling fans not working 4 Jul 2012 (Forum)
The only info I have seen as credible is this: You have 1 sensor for the fans & Bitron unit 1 sensor does the temp gauge & ECU (if petrol injection ) The other sensor does the "STOP" & "High temperature" warning lights Thats why Peugeot 405s have 3 temperature sensors. Obviously I have found the temp sensor. I attached a wire each to the remaining sensors and connected the "open" wires to the sensors whenever the engine was hot enough but there has been no response form the fans.
  • DPF Q&A -- sheds some light 1 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Obviously the details will differ a little with other manufacturers' DPF implementations, but it does give a good insight into the conditions needed to get typical catalyst-coated DPFs to regenerate, how long a regen. takes, how the ECU manages a regen cycle, effect on oil quality, etc etc. Question: The glow plug symbol is flashing. Why? What should be done? Answer: The DPF regeneration has not been completed during normal driving and now DPF has reached its maximum saturation at which it can still be regenerated.
  • Vectra 3.2 V6 2003 - Vectra cuts out and wont start......sometimes 5 Jun 2013 (Forum)
What is causing it to cut out and why after an hour does it start again and run? The internet forums seem to come down to a few possibilities such as ‘ECU’ or ‘Crank case sensor’ or ‘Rad Fans’. Has anyone experienced such an issue and if so how did you sort it and what costs are involved in spares such as a ‘crank shaft sensor’ etc.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 02 1.9TDi white smoke on cold startup. 25 Sep 2013 (Forum)
The car isn't using any large amount of coolant, I haven't had to top it up for over a year. 2. What sort of temp range does the ECU switch the glowplugs on? I've tried changing it to a longer glow period but it doesn't make any difference. THe light comes on and goes out straight away. 3. Can I know rule out stem valves as it didn't smoke this morning?
  • Skoda Yeti - Skoda Yeti - my thoughts on 10K miles / 1 year 1 Sep 2013 (Forum)
The tyres at 10K miles were 1/3 worn on the front and appeared virtually unworn on the back I had 3 unscheduled visits to the main dealer * ECU Flashed / interior bulb replaced * Cam position sensor replaced after ESP failure popped up on the maxidot * Passenger rear door lock replaced after child locks/central locking failed. I then had the Bolero (radio) flashed by the main dealer in order to address the "slow SD card read" issue - this made a huge difference.
  • Citroen Saxo VTR 2000 W Reg - Major electrical issue(s) 18 Jan 2012 (Forum)
A recent driveshaft change has identified that the engine is a silvertop engine from an earlier MK1 saxo with a 3 plug ECU but in a MK2 body.  It has just reached 60,000 miles and has had 5 owners, it's mechanically pretty sound and looks in good nick for its age. Issues from the start So, ever since I had the car I have had intermittent issues regarding the indicator relay.
  • Things we didn't ask for on cars 22 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Is it really better than an ordinary flywheel that lasts the life of the car, because I don't remember many problems with those on the road or track? 2. The beloved ECU.....can it run windows 7, or Vista, does it have a full colour 18 inch display, or 300 gigabytes of storage and 4gb of onboard ram. Does it have multiprocessing ability, can it play music, does it replace your stereo, or MP3 player, can it play DVDs in the car.
  • Mitsubishi Outlander - Could it be a failed DMF on a SST (Dual Clutch)?? 20 Nov 2020 (Forum)
    3) Take it to the Peugeot dealer who can bill the warranty company directly, assuming the fault is covered, it should be as "all components, friction materials, bearings, ECU's" of automatic and dual clutch gear boxes are specifically named, as is wear and tear - I'll just pay a 20% excess for parts. But they will charge more per hour if its not under warranty and might immobilise the car into the bargain!
  • Why is my Hyundai i20 mpg so much lower than expected? 9 Jan 2017 (Ask HJ)
My 2012 Hyundai i20 1.2, 41,000 miles on the clock is quoted an average of 57.6 mpg. Your website suggests that the real average mpg for this make and...
  • Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - 1990 1.9 GTi starting problems 25 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Found another relay that was not located by the other bank of relays. It is under / near the steering column on the same bolt that secures the ECU. This is what I have found when I disconnect it. The engine turns over BUT when you release the ignition switch from start position the starter motor actually stops spinning!!! (unlike when the relay is plugged in) When it is plugged in the starter motor is continuing to be energised when the ignition switch is released from start position.
