  • You can't turn a pig's ear into a silk purse. 16 Jan 2010 (Forum)
If you're a high mileage company car driver who'll get a car for 2 or 3 years, blast it up and down motorways and then throw them away, the only concern is diesel biased BIK and fuel costs (if you have to pay them.) again diesels win that argument. The bottom line is the compression ignition engine is a rough old dirty beast running on rough old dirty fuel, successive generations of diesel cars have ever increasing layers of complexity to try to make a silk purse out of a pig's ear:- Complex or active engine mounts, DFP filters, anti-pollutant additive systems, ever increasing fuel injection pressures, dual mass flywheels, the necessity for a turbocharger.
  • PSA C5 Eolys additive for FAP filter 28 Feb 2006 (Forum)
A detector in the additive reservoir with low fluid warning ? An injection system to load the main fuel tank ? A dedicated calculator to manage the additive process ? A fuel cap with microswitch,. When the cap is removed, the system detects the additive level before and after filling, and dispenses the proportional amount of Eolys additive into the fuel tank.
  • R56 Mini Cooper S 2011 - Fault Code P0087 5 Aug 2024 (Forum)
A friend's Mini is showing fault code P0087 - Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too Low. A garage diagnosed an issue with the fuel pump, sent it away for repair, and refitted. It has a slight misfire when started, but it quickly clears, however the MIL is on and the only fault code is P0087.
  • Citroen dispatch 2007 1997cc 120 deisel - Lift pump relay image and location 13 Mar 2024 (Forum)
Van cut out whilst driving. After rest started again, but not anymore .Can't hear pump when I listen at open deisel cap. Also disconnected feed pipe to fuel filter and turned ignition, no fuel coming through. Accept the pump is broken or it's relay or break in wiring. However I can't find an image of a 2007 lift pump relay, or it's location. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks any knowing person out there on the big web!
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace 1.6/115 2013 - Fault Code P000E 30 Oct 2020 (Forum)
Car went to limp mode and will not rev over 3,000rpm.  Fault code per generic OBD II reader is P000E which apparently means Fuel Volume Regulator Control Exceeded Learning Limit The fault clears but re-appears 15/20 seconds after re start.  May be relevant that it first appeared half a mile or so after topping up fuel tank from approx. half to full.
  • Shell V Power and the Mazda Skyactiv X engine 17 Jan 2020 (Forum)
Higher octane fuel is more knock resistant, so the lean burn compression ignition would have problems. Would be interesting to hear HJ's thoughts on this. Mazda actually recommend 95 RON.
  • Ford Focus 2009. 1.6 - Air Mass Flow Sensor 31 Jul 2017 (Forum)
Have a focus 2 and been having a start problem. The car cranks but doesent start. Checked fuel filter and no blokage was present. I Have an elm 327 and checked everything that I colud. Fuel rail pressure is 1000-1200kpa and every thing else seens o be in order except Air mass flow sensor wich shows about 144g/s wich i think, but am not shure, that it's extremly high for an engine that doesen't run.
  • VW Golf 1.6 TDi - Ouch!! Expensive! 16 Jul 2015 (Forum)
After a thorough diagnostic, the garage informed me that ALL FOUR injectors need replacing. They cannot be cleaned, or otherwise salvaged. Total cost of replacing the injectors, plus a fuel filter, plus labour: 2250 Pounds No idea how I have managed to fry fuel injectors after only 5.5 years of use and only 59K miles.  Even worse, no idea what to do next.
  • SEAT Ibiza SC - Diesel in engine oil 24 Dec 2013 (Forum)
Is this a common fault? How did the oil make its way into the sump?  I have read of failures of fuel injector seals - could this be the problem? I assume that the fuel has been leaking into the engine for some period of time but getting SEAT/the dealer to admit this could be a problem? A new engine is needed and they don't come cheap.
  • Mitsubishi Grandis - Car won't start after running out of diesel 10 Sep 2013 (Forum)

  • peugeot 306 - my 306 has developed a stutter 31 Jan 2013 (Forum)
whilst driving ive noticed an intermittant loss of power abit like when you'rerunning out of fuel then it drives fine for a bit then does it again and got worse recently then clear up for a bit then came back but this time when it happened was accompanied by a sound that i can only describe as very similar to that of driving along the rumble strip on the motorway but if you push your foot down on the accelerator and speed up it clears for a bit, obviously its a fueling issue of some sort but was wondering how to sort it out as never had peugeots before and new to them
  • MAZDA B2500 (NON TURBO) diesel pickup - POWER LOSS 19 Oct 2012 (Forum)
Gradual loss of power and lots of black smoke from exhaust whilst on M-Way - nervously watching instruments until the next exit, suddenly the fuel gauge dropped to zero.  Nearest  garage asked if I had put petrol in - I don't think so.  Loss of power is almost total. Is the fuel gauge issue a coincidence, or a symtom connected with the other problem ?
  • Williams ? - Fire at racetrack 26 May 2012 (Forum)
The article raised the question as to whether the fire was caused by a battery situated beneath the fuel tank.  The battery is/ was used to provide a speed boost lasting 6.6 seconds every lap. Am I old fashioned in imagining that locating a battery beneath a fuel tank is inviting that kind of fire ?
  • Vauxall vectra cdti 1.9 diesel 2005 life - Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 cdti whining noise!! 17 Jul 2011 (Forum)
It increases under acceleration and decreases when you lift off. It only started after the car was not Pulling through fuel over 2000 revs in any gear, I floored it and it seemed to clear it but then the whining noise started. The first problem I think was dirty fuel injectors, have cleaned with redex but whining noise persists!!!
  • Replacement small car 12 Jul 2011 (Forum)
Garages tell me this engine is well known for dirt and I've been told to budget for high maintenance costs from now on. I want to replace it for a lower mileage car with very good fuel economy (I currently get >50mpg on the motorway), reliable engine with low maintenance costs. Petrol or diesel, doesn't matter, but the fuel economy is important. Any ideas? Thanks,

  • Peugeot 306 hdi - Help finding a whistle in the engine bay 5 Dec 2010 (Forum)
I took it to my local french car specialist who located it near the egr valve at the drivers side bulkhead but cant pinpoint it. Ive been told it could possibly be to do with the fuel rail and that some people think changing the fuel filter housing (bad one way valve) would help. I cant see how if it sounds like its near the egr. Anybody have any ideas what it could be?
  • Toyota Verso SR 2.2 Diesel 07 Reg. - Engine noise-rattle 3 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Some "diesel " folk tell me it may be a dirty EGR valve and Injectors! please explain? Also told not to use supermarket fuel. I am starting to use Shell V fuel if that helps-will it take a while to clear? Will there have been any engine damage done? Will I need the injectors replaced?
  • Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec 1999 - Driving feels course / rough? 14 Apr 2010 (Forum)
It seems as the engine is lacking oil, but I've checked this and appears OK. Just wondering what it could be - fuel injectors, fuel filter? Or would spark plugs do the trick? I don't think it's the coil packs, as I had this a while ago with the exhaust spluttering / mis-firing. Thanks for any advice.
