  • Most economical small car 3 Feb 2003 (Forum)
My daughter is looking for a car for shopping/school runs, etc. She will probably be driving no more than 10 miles each way, twice a day, mainly through town and slow moving traffic. Mpg economy is paramount - she doesn't particularly want a diesel, but I suppose for this type of driving it would probably be better?
  • Schizo Alternator? 1 Aug 2002 (Forum)
While idling, the battery voltage is 12V but drops to 10V after some time or right after stop and go driving. At 2500 RPM the terminals read about 13.5V The tachometer jumps around a lot while driving. Sometimes when I hit the brakes, the radio goes off, but not always. Anyone have a diagnosis?
  • Diesel MPG 31 May 2002 (Forum)
What can I do to improve fuel economy without changing driving techniques?

  • Citroen withdrawal symptoms 27 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Since I have been driving a turbo diesel again (Peugeot 406), my mind must have subconsciously defaulted to 1995-98 when I had a Citroen BX TZD. Several mornings I have found myself waiting on the drive with the engine idling for that sensation of the suspension rising up!
  • rover brake light probs 9 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Alright all, I've actually got a car related problem for once... :-) My mate drives an M reg Rover 218sd turbo diesel. When he's driving along and accelerates hard (foot to the floor), the handbrake-on/discs worn dashboard light comes on, but works fine in all other respects. Any ideas why its doing this?
  • Poor ride quality in Nissan Primera 10 Mar 2001 (Forum)
My L reg Primera 1800 makes me feel as if I am driving on solid tyres, and seems to have poor road holding qualities. The obvious answer would normally be connected with the tracking or suspension, but no fault has been found with either of these. The suspension is unusually hard though, and gives the impression of driving over cobbles, even when on a smooth road surface.
  • variable valve timing 18 Jan 2001 (Forum)
I drive a Honda civic 1.5ils 1998 mod .Does anyone else find the occasional power surges when driving at steady speeds annoying. I have to keep a carefull eye on my speed when approaching cameras. (speed can increase 5-7mph) I am told this is normal by Honda.Ps no i am not one of those drivers that try to squeeze as many mpg as possible out of this remarkably economical engine!.
  • My first 6 weeks with a 520d 15 Jul 2012 (Forum)
I do circa 30,000 miles a year so comfort is my priority but I do drive ‘swiftly’ so do expect a car to handle on the B roads as well as the motorways. I do very little town driving as I live in rural Gloucestershire but I do a fair bit of motorway driving. First things first, the headlights are dire.
  • BMW X3 - Faulty car, dealer ignoring me 1 May 2024 (Forum)
On 23rd Dec 2023 I bought a 2017 BMW X3 M Sport with 47,000 miles on the clock from an independent dealer. Took it for a test drive beforehand, seemed ok. Paid via bank transfer - £18,000. Soon after (literally driving home), I could feel a vibration upon harder acceleration that I have not felt before in previous cars.
  • False accident accusation - please help! 15 Dec 2013 (Forum)
I know that if I was walking into the carpark, I was 100% not driving that day. I called the police back, admitted that I had made a mistake and that I wasn't even driving that day and I had the CCTV to prove it. I also had my doctor witness my undamaged car and date and sign photos with newspapers in etc etc.
  • which drivers' car for commute? 25 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I very much like driving the car, with the torque, steering feel, handling and cabin comfort appealing to me. I don't like the 32mpg fuel economy and repair bills! We tend to drive in Mondeo at weekends and on holiday because it is bigger for our young family, but apart from my personal driving pleasure it makes no sense for me to have the larger car from day to day.
  • Volkswagen Golf VI (2009 - ) - GTI test drive 2 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Yet another Golf VI thread I'm afraid :-) Thought I would post a few observations from a test drive in the new GTI. Had the car for a few hours last week, did around 100 miles of mixed Motorway, A/B-road and urban driving. Something a bit different from the 2.2 diesel Avensis I currently drive. Apologies for mentioning it throughout, but obviously it was my yardstick for comparison - if an unlikely one!
  • Firms to be liable for company/own car safety 28 Oct 2007 (Forum)
"Businesses must face up top the fact that they are responsible for employees' welfare when on the road for business purposes, whether they are driving a company car or not." Companies that required staff to drive during long working days could be held liable if they were involved in accidents, according to a report issued last week by the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport.
  • Jeep Trials at West Harptree, Bristol 20 May 2007 (Forum)
Each activity lasted around half an hour. 1) Introduction to ESP and Quadradrive (Jeeps version of Traction Control employed by Land Rover). 2) Off road driving experience 3) On road trial 4) Agility driving. 1) Was as it says really. A couple of short videos about ESP and then a demonstration of Quadra Drive. The vehicle they used to demonstrate the quadra drive was specially adapted to enable switching off of this feature so that we could see it with and without.
  • Volkswagen Golf Estate 2L BlueMotion - Advise on Car 16 Jul 2022 (Forum)
Advice on used Golf 2.0 TDI estate BlueMotion 15 plate 60k I work in a community mental health team (UK) in a semi rural area and do a lot of driving, roughly 250 miles a week. Mainly 60 mph-roads but with some town driving and motorway driving. Also do an hour motorway driving about once or twice a month. I’ve found a golf estate 2.0 BlueMotion 15 plate with 60k on the clock.
  • Daihatsu Skywing (like Charade Mk2) - Toothed belt on smooth V-pulleys? 9 Sep 2021 (Forum)
The car seems to drive OK (briefly, since no water pump drive) without the belt so clutch release bearings etc dont seem to be part of the problem.  I can't remember if the drive belts on my previous smooth V-pulley setups had teeth. though I'm pretty sure early ones didn't. and I wonder if the wrong belt might have been fitted.
  • Volkswagen Golf Mk6 (2010) 1.4 TSI Automatic - VW Golf Mk6 DQ200 DSG 7 Speed - Worth Keeping? 12 Jan 2021 (Forum)
The gearbox is also "sealed for life", therefore gearbox oil changes at 40,000 mile intervals cannot be carried out. The mileage is only around 56000 miles and the drive in general is really good. I'm a conventional driver averaging about 4000 miles annually, rarely ever speed or drive above the speed limit, but on the odd occasion I do seem to experience a slight jerk whether it's driving off from standstill or whilst driving in general.
  • Wet Macular Degeneration - Eye sight problems. NO SYMPATHY PLEASE! 15 Nov 2020 (Forum)
https://www.macular.org/eylea-injection-treatment Having been through the trauma of advising a friend not to drive and then finally writing to DVLA to let them know of my concerns, I am determined not to go down the same route. If I am advised to stop driving or am not happy to continue I will do so! Using the Amsler test my vision is fine, and so far there are no missing bits...and my vision is good for driving too.
  • Looking for a new Compact SUV 4 Oct 2020 (Forum)
I am mainly a weekend suburb driver although due to a recent office relocation I may soon start driving to work (lots of start and stop in heavy traffic). About 50 KM a day. I was playing around with idea of a Hybrid especially if I do start driving to work. I'd appreciate thoughts if the higher purchase price is worth it?
