  • Advice on second hand car purchase 17 May 2024 (Forum)
I'm doing about 175 miles a week, mainly motorway trips to and from work which is why I went for the big old Skoda and the C class before it but I'm wondering if the big old diesel engine route is still the way to go. I do a longer run to Oxford from Liverpool about once every 6 weeks or so. Budget is about £6,000.
  • The Reality of Low Cost/Desperate Motoring 2 Sep 2018 (Forum)
A Megane would not have been my recommended car but at this end of the market, I believe, condition and service history is all important. Worst comes to worst, the cost of the car plus tyres is about £600. If the car lasts a year, that's £50 a month.
  • Maintain no claims bonus 23 Aug 2016 (Forum)
I think my options are: 1. Take a policy out on my wife's car. As her policy is 4 months old, there would be some cost to cancelling it. Although the annual premium is ~£50 cheaper for me insuring it. 2. Buy an old cheap (low insurance group) car, park it up and insure it.
  • Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - 1.9CDTI Engine Build Quality 30 May 2014 (Forum)
Has anyone else encountered the same problems as myself with this engine? The car was purchased in Oct.2007,as an ex-company car with a good service history,it being only just three years old, with a mileage of 91K. Within a couple of weeks the intercooler had to be replaced ( under the sellers warranty),as it had a hole appear in it,after which the car ran well until 3 weeks ago when it had to be rescued with a suspected cam-belt failure.

  • Anyone been successful in the small claims court? 7 Feb 2013 (Forum)
(needs reconditioning of gear box c£2000) I am just about to fill out forms for small claims court but am unsure what I can present as evidence that would help my claim. The dealer is going to claim that 2500 miles was "satisfactory quality" for a car that age - even though we paid over £3k for it. Has anyone successfully got a refund from a dealer in a similar situation for a car this old?

  • Hyundai - Hyundai "Happy Returns" upgrade your scrappage buy 23 May 2010 (Forum)
Customers will be able to trade up and down the range if they want to switch to a different car or add options. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- --------- What do we think of this idea? I reckon its a go-er, though poor old "apple" still hasn't had his first i10 let alone a new one.
  • Gutted. My new car is old already! 1 Jul 2005 (Forum)

  • Vw golf - Cheap overnight in car camera to catch vandal? 14 May 2022 (Forum)
I park my car in a small private car park. Someone keeps putting screws in my tryes overnight. I need a small camera on my parcel shelf/rear screen to see who is doing this. My car is old and I am on a budget, but I cannot afford the plugs/new tyres anymore.

  • Would you buy this car? 4 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Just been out to look at a car for MIL. A 15 month old car priced cheap, one lady owner, 4000 miles, and from looking around the car and a quick ride in it looked fine. However, the V5 had a different name and address (address in a town 40 miles away) to that of the person selling, "It's my aunties, and she is out of the country for a few weeks, but asked me to sell her car, she will sign the V5 when she comes back", no written confirmation of this, and the V5 also has a taxation class of Disabled.
  • First car - Motorway driving 6 May 2017 (Forum)
Hi all, I'm looking to purchase my first car, which will mostly be used as a motorway commuter car, commuting roughly 100 miles a day. I'm aware larger diesel cars can be more economical travelling at high speeds, but I have to balance this with the fact I'm a new driver (held licence for 1 year and 25 years old).
  • When is a new car not new? 21 Jan 2004 (Forum)
The 3 year warranty starts from last September so that is OK but to my way of thinking the car is over 2 years old!! Does this happen often or do we as consumers need to check the build date on each new car that we buy? Any thoughts on this alan
  • BMW 535i - Family MPV - but which to sell? 22 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Against that the Beemer is a bit longer in the tooth (94K done, regularly serviced) but then again, all the depreciation is out of the car. BMW insurance £450/Golf £250 annually. The Golf will do 32mpg(urban),50mpg(extra-urban) and the Beemer averages at,as I say,24mpg. So which motor to sell? And what to get? I'm thinking sell the Beemer and get a 1 year-old Zafira....any ideas?
  • Do you trust Dealer Franchises 23 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Two recent problems with my VW TDI and my answer would be no ! When my car was under warranty just over a year ago, it had a new turbo fitted because the old one was overboosting due to sticking variable vanes and a new CV boot because the old one had split. 6 months ago, the same CV joint started making the classic clicking/grinding noises which usually means it's time for a new one.
  • Where’s the joy? 10 Jan 2021 (Forum)
With this in mind I started thinking about potential less sensible and potentially less reliable replacements for old “Terrance” the Toyota now that family car duties have been handed over to “Venus” the very capable Volvo. Wife to blame for car naming btw. The Toyota has been utterly dependable and drives without fault.
  • Nissan Almera Tino 2.2 dCi - Poor fuel economy 6 Apr 2019 (Forum)
I have checked tyre pressures and the air filter cleanliness, the car has FSH and was only serviced 3000 miles ago. The fuel computer says 37mpg, and filling the tank and working it out the old fasioned way only confirms the computer is accurate! Even if I put the car in 6th at 60mph on the dual carriageway, and reset the computer it refuses to indicate a better average than 39mpg.
