  • Hyundai Getz 2004 CDX - Smoke/oil leak in Hyundai Getz 2 Nov 2024 (Forum)
Hi all, Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on what might be the cause of this issue with my 2004 Getz (automatic), which normally runs very smoothly. After periods of not having driven the car for a few days, or when making shorter journeys of under 3 miles, when the engine stops, you can smell smoke and a burning clutch or oil-like smell coming through the vents.
  • Fun weekend car - suggestions? 30 Jul 2024 (Forum)
Other options are an MX-5 except I am not entirely sure it's my thing and later models are all manuals.  I believe they are very reliable though. The criteria is preferably automatic, good to drive and powerful enough to have a bit of performance though doesn't have to be a licence loser. Any thoughts on the Mini and other alternatives? Budget up to £20k.
  • BMW X! - Alternative to our BMW X1 2 Oct 2023 (Forum)
We think its worth between £7500 and £8000 so ideally want to get a car between £5000 and £6000 My daughter likes being high up and we all like automatics Any ideas which of these on our list ( obviously if we choose on history and condition ) would we be a 'wise' alternative for something reliable and not costly to fix ( which I think the BMW is if anything went wrong ) We would probably only do about 6-8k miles a year.
  • Ford Focus Active; CHR; Vitara; Civic - Advice on used vs approved car 16 Jun 2023 (Forum)
I am new to UK. I am planning to get a 3-4 years old used automatic for 15K-20K. Being not sure of the road conditions (portholes, countryside roads etc), I consider Ford Focus Active, Toyota CHR, Suzuki Vitara due to their greater ground clearance. Is my concern valid?
  • Hyundai Tucson - Power Failure Same Place 6 Apr 2022 (Forum)
Both diesels, first was a 1.7TDI, the current one is a 1.6TDI MHEV. Both DSG Automatics. I have had a strange loss of power in both though - only once each and exactly the same place, within a mile of home, returning from a long trip (over 100 miles). There was plenty of fuel in the tank.
  • Vauxhall Grandland - Intellilux LED Headlights 7 Feb 2022 (Forum)
You can see a transition from light to dark just ahead of an oncoming car as they constantly adjust. Beam patterns change automatically as road speed increases, motorways a longer, narrower beam, slightly slower A roads a wider beam pattern to illuminate verges. If you’re offered it as an option on a new car, I’d take it. Going back to my halogen lights will be a shock… I don’t have the Illumination Pack on this one - that offers infrared vision via a camera in the grille displayed on the dash, but it’d be useful if you lived in a more rural area.
  • Honda or Mazda auto - Opinions please 28 Aug 2021 (Forum)
My leanings are to a 2016/2017 civic EX or 2018 Mazda 3 Sport Nav.. I'm 75 and Mrs is 10 years behind me. I'm thinking automatic this time. Opinions on the Civic and Mazda auto's please. Is there anything I should be aware of with either box? I appreciate that I (we) will need to test drive both so I'm not asking for specific recommendations, but would want to avoid buying something with potential similar issues to certain VW boxes for example.
  • Ask HJ no longer worth it? 24 Aug 2020 (Forum)
Ive noticed the same old questions keep cropping up: what's the best \ cheapest dashcam, what's the best car for a 20 \ 70 year old, what's the best automatic small car etc, etc.
  • Mk 7 VW Golf GTD - Buying Advice 31 Jul 2020 (Forum)
If I was more knowledgeable about cars I’d consider getting a higher mileage example provided it had been looked after - can anyone advise please that if I was to get a higher mileage one, what mileage range should I consider where it was likely to have had its major work done such as cam belt change etc.. Please note I’d happily consider an automatic  so what extra costs (and at what time of the car’s life) need I consider please? Obviously I’d check this with the seller , but seek this information so that I can narrow my search.
  • Toyota Camry - Lost ATF 26 Jan 2020 (Forum)
Hi I have a 1999 Toyota Camry 2.2 automatic. Mileage is approximately 300 000 miles. The car is all original and doesn't give much trouble. I just get a basic service once a year and don't normally need to top up fluids etc. About 18 months ago I had a new radiator fitted (the original started to weep at the bottom).
  • Buying used car 20 Aug 2019 (Forum)
I’m a newbie in terms of what’s best on a car but my ideal car should have: comfort, good handling, engine size and bhp like my Seat or slightly more bhp (180 to 200ish max), automatic transmission. About petrol or diesel engine I have no idea, consider that usually my trips aren’t very long (commute is max 15/20 mins away plus local driving to shops in town) and I drive more during weekends (max 2 hours distance).
  • any - how long to get the best from your vehicle 3 Aug 2018 (Forum)
I reckon it takes me about 4/5 months before i can get the best from a new to me vehicle, though i don't think you ever stop learning. Was issued a new lorry at work in Feb, and we have fuel consumption displayed automatically on the depot fuel pump every time we refill. OK so it was new and the engine obviously tight, but at first my fuel figures were  disappointing to me (nothing ever said by work), but now several months later the figures are much better, though the warm weather must be playing its part as well, be interesting to see what happens this winter.
  • Help pick an SUV, auto, petrol Max £16K 5 Jun 2018 (Forum)
Must be high seating (so SUV think), petrol only (conditions are always town driving so don't want diesel, DPF issue etc), automatic. Under 16K and ideally year 17 on so have some manufacturers warranty. Also like the look of Android Auto/Apple CarPlay for phone connection with a nice large touchscreen. Not too bothered on inbuilt sat nav as can use the phones sat nav as only used sparely anyway.
  • N/A - Tesla autopilot 28 Apr 2018 (Forum)
Unproven tech in motor vehicles is going to cost innocent victims their lives. We have radar cruise control, automatic braking and other so called safety sytems which give the drivers a false sense of security. The latest I observe is brake lights coming on for no apparent reason when following on the motorway due to these systems.
  • Any - Customer service from Hell 7 Oct 2017 (Forum)
I frequent, (or  perhaps haunt) another forum concerned with the model that I currently own.  Its useful for finding out stuff like how to replace bulbs and to have a moan about automatic gearboxes.  There's a post on there from someone who took their car to a Ford dealer in a very large Southern city for gearbox work. When they got it back, a nearly new premium tyre had been damaged (possibly a Goodyear or Michelin), the car, which had been washed before delivery to the dealer, was filthy with grass under the wheelarches as if it had been taken off road, the alloys were black with muck and there were scratches on the paintwork that hadn't been there before.
  • Mazda 2 2006/07 1.4 Petrol - Any good? 25 Jan 2015 (Forum)
Question - any owners out there care to comment on Mazda 2's from 2006/07 in 1.4 petrol guise? I would prefer an automatic but HJ says they can go wrong and manual is a better option.  Any views on this? Not looking to replace Polo for a few months so no rush and would hope prices have dropped to £2.5k when I eventually take the plunge.
  • Suzuki and others. - Warning Light Reset 18 Dec 2014 (Forum)
The issue is not unique to my vehicle it seems to be a general "false positive" on Suzukis that should probably reset automatically but doesn't always do so. I have paid to get the  light reset each time and thought I should have a go at fixing it myself at the next event. This happened last week so I went on line and found the Autel MS300 Scan Tool with several U-Tube reviews that said it works for resets and it's simple to use.
  • Driving in Europe with HID Xenon lamps!! 28 Jul 2014 (Forum)
They were totally clueless, and although the Skoda garage looked in the workshop manual, the Ford place insisted on arguing that you can't adjust it!!! I know that height adjustment is automatic, but I think that sales should make buyers aware of such an important issue when ordering with Xenons as normal light deflectors do not work. Has anyone here had these problems too, or in the case of driving abroad, found an easier way then removing the bumper on a VAG car to adjust them for driving on the right?

Seat Leon 1.4 TSi 122 PS manual with 5 yrs warranty 5. VW Golf 1.4 TSi 122 PS manual with 5 yrs warranty   For the sake of simplicity we'll assume that all cars have the same extras and cost the same.
  • Ford Focus - Door Protectors 15 Mar 2014 (Forum)
I have, on several occasions have realised  my Ford Focus 2012 has not locked properly. This car has the automatic door protectors which are connected to the door mechanism. The problem I find is that you have to be careful that you give the door extra force when closing. This does not mean slam but, failing to give the door a good shove, results in the door left open a jar.
