  • Ford Fiesta (1989 - 1995) - 1996 1.1 steering UJ replacement 28 Nov 2008 (Forum)
The inner steering shaft moves up against the bearing spring a couple of mm inside the column. Do the two UJs need to be in any specific alignment to each other? Apart from the hex end on the steering shaft, there is no restriction on lower UJ fitting.
  • Passat Tyre Wear 1 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I've just had my front Michelin Pilot Primacy tyres, 195- 65 X 15V replaced after 13000 miles. So the full suspension alignment check did not make a big difference to the life- apart from the wear being absolutely even across the tread. Trying a pair of ATS own tyres Euromasters. So I guess the premature wear is all down to my driving , not that I consider myself a wild driver and I do get 46 mpg overall from the 100bhp PD estate.
  • Dim Headlights 2 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Is it possible to fit brighter bulbs? Don't want to irritate other drivers. How can I test the alignment? (MOT 2 months ago, they check this don't they?). Car is: V70 R, 1999. (Dashboard light height adjuster is working fine). Thanks, Stu
  • MOT / headlamps / brakes / con-men 28 Dec 2004 (Forum)
My understanding of headlamp adjustment is that it is done on stiff-threads, and it would take some sort of impact or disturbing of the headlamp mount to affect the beam alignment? The car hasn?t suffered anything like this in the last year, so I?ve no reason to suspect the headlamps would be out of alignment. I already plan to call the garage who did the MOT and ask what their copy of the failure sheet says next to 'headlamp aim'.
  • Mazda 6 Estate 2015 - Excessive tyre noise 25 Apr 2021 (Forum)
I have a 2015 Mazda 5 estate riding on 225/45 R19 tyres. Recently I've noticed what seems like excessive tyre noise and vibration and am wondering if alignment/tracking will help with this. I have had a few bumps against high pavements as well as driving through some poor quality roads with large potholes. I am not expecting the comfiest of rides with my tyre spec, but it does seem the noise and vibration has increased since I bought the car in 2018.
  • Hyundai i10 - Clutch noise 27 Nov 2020 (Forum)
Whilst it is touching the meta plate, if I turn my steering wheel, I can feel something grinding against the metal plate (a ball like grinding). Not sure if it’s related but the steering pulls massively to the left and I had the wheels aligned which hasn’t fixed the problem. It’s a Hyundai i10. Would appreciate any thoughts as to what it could be before I take it to a mechanic .
  • Suzuki SX4 S-Cross - Tyre wear 23 Jun 2016 (Forum)
After 10,000 miles and 1 year from brand new my rear tyres are wearing much more heavily than the front tyres and the LHR is nearly down to the limit indicator.  Had an independant 4 wheel laser wheel alignment check done and it showed the rear wheels out of spec. Both the main dealer and Suzuki Technical UK insist that there is no problem and the tyres should be interchanged every 6000 miles.  This sounds like a fob off to me and is covering up a known problem.
  • Yaris 02 - Kerbed: play in steering 6 Feb 2014 (Forum)
There are no noises from the steering when turning, so it's not wheel bearings or anything like that. Is it just a matter of getting the tracking/wheel alignment fixed? I guess Kwik-Fit or similar would do this?
  • any - dangerous HID headlights 24 Feb 2011 (Forum)
I see areport out condeming HID headlamps, 90% of those asked claimed to of been dazzled by them! I'm not so sure its the HID lamps, i think its more a case of those that are not correctly aligned and those that are incorrectly fitted to cars as conversions kits, but worse still are those that will fit the illegal 110w bulbs. having been an MOT tester its so easy to spot those cars driving around clearly with illegal bulbs and included are motorcycles where some are running around on full beam or badly adjusted
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 1999. Vibrating steering wheel & noise from wheels 11 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Also when i brake from high speeds the steering wheel begins to shudder. I think this is do with wheel alignment and possibly wheel bearing problems. Can anyone shed any light? thanks

  • Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - 00 2.0 crankshaft pulley 23 Nov 2009 (Forum)
00 2.0 high pitch rattle - glowplug It's a long shot but does it have a damped crankshaft pulley? If so paint a line across it and keep checking to see if the line becomes mis-aligned. If that happens have the pulley replaced before it flings the aux belt into the timing belt and wrecks the engine. Steve. steve you were wright. it looks like the bottom pulley is the cause of the rattle. is it a big job to remove the bottom pulley???.
  • It takes me 20 seconds to decide on a car 27 Feb 2009 (Forum)
This weeks happening I will travel to a garage to see a car spend less than 20 seconds looking at it to discover that none of the front panels align properly or rust in a terminal place etc? Are other people the same? If after 20 seconds I am interested in the car, I start to get a little excited, then I will find other potential problems with it as I investigate or buy it.
  • Renault Megane (1996 - 1998) - 98 1.6 How to find top dead center on a 1600cc 8v 6 Jul 2008 (Forum)
It says "Look through the aperture at the flywheel end of the engine and continue turning crankshaft until the TDC timing mark on the flywheel/driveplate is aligned with the TDC mark on the gearbox bellhousing." I cant see the timing mark on the flywheel/driveplate. Anyone know what this looks like or where it should be? Many thanks, Sean
  • Nissan Almera (2000 - 2006) - 2005 1.5 Steering Wheel/Front suspension Vibration 29 Apr 2008 (Forum)
i've recently purchased a 2005 Nissan Almera 1.5sx with only 20,000miles on the clock but i've noticed a vibration through the steering wheel and the car generally at speeds of 60 - 75 mph. had the wheel alignment and balancing done but still seems to be a problem. is this a design problem with the car or should i leave it in with a Nissan Dealership as it has 3 months warranty left.the car was previously " pulling" to the left and needed realignment. any suggestions would be most appreciated.
  • My car only has one wheel balanced 22 Oct 2005 (Forum)
For a while i felt the car is not particularly stable at high-speed ie 70mph+ and recently noticed some vibration at 80mph. the tyres are avons. Everything else (alignment, spheres, bushes etc all all fine) So would this be 1) the cause of high speed instability and 2) vibration.
  • volvo repair cost..up and up 2 Oct 2004 (Forum)
My wifes volvo 480 failed its mot due to a faulty steerung rack. I had it done by a local chap but he had to remove the steering wheel to align it. Low and behold the SRS light comes on and he says he cannot fix that as only Volvo have the gizmo to do the job.. Volvo in Basingstoke say it will take under an hour...first attempt fails....second attempt fails....now they say 4 to 5 hours strip the electrics to get to the loom.
  • Diff flange probs & pinion pre-load 26 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Have finally got a very good diff for my Omega, but the flange is smaller than on the one I have removed and therefore the bolt holes dont align with prop flange. My car is a late '96 and the diff I am fitting is a '94. I assume it was beefed up over the years or perhaps its off a 2 litre. Anyway, has anyone experience of differential flange swopping?
  • Mk IV VW Golf steering 30 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Front tyre wear seems Ok and even (have covered 24,000 miles). The left-pull is consistent-happens on any road, any speed. Had steering laser-aligned by VW; they made several minor adjustments but, you guessed it, it still pulls to the left. But driving the car on an area of flat new asphalt car park shows there is no left-pull whatsoever. So is this a design flaw of the Golf: they are hyper sensitive to road camber?
