Land Rover Range Rover - Honest advice on buying a used Range Rover 6 Jun 2012 (Forum)
I understand the Range Rover is going to have some pretty hefty expenses, but it is such a stunning multi purpose vehicle, and would easily tow my boat. What are your thoughts on my choices, has anyone had first hand experience of owning either of these cars? BTW, I am rather handy with a spanner, so most of the maintainance would be performed by myself. -
Citroen Dispatch 2001 1.9d non turbo - Engine won't start after major oil filter leak 16 Apr 2012 (Forum)
There was a lot of oil on the engine near the filter and all over the underside of the sump, side of alternator and surrounding area. I checked the dipstick and it looked almost empty. After being towed home I changed the oil and filter, nothing seems to be leaking but the van still won't start up. The glow plug light comes on and goes off as it should but the red stop and orange oil lights are still on, the engine turns as normal but doesn't fire up. -
Ford Focus 2006 1.6 Zetec - Ford Focus 2006 Disaster 5 Apr 2012 (Forum)
RAC came and tried new battery, tried boost pack and banged it with lots of sticks (honest!) and had no luck. Ended up having it towed to a local garage. The immobiliser light is still flashing quickly which suggests the key is not recognised. Key was left in ignition when jump starting, wondering if this could have wiped it? -
KIA Ceed Sport 2L Diesel - Rapid Tyre Wear 20 Mar 2011 (Forum)
I’m wondering which tyres you would advise for improved wear and improved fuel consumption. I bought the 2 litre as I tow a caravan. I’m wondering if it would be an advantage to replace the alloys with 15” steel wheels and tyres. These would be 195/65 R15. The idea is that I'd not not notice the potholes as much as I do with the 17" alloys, but am concerned that it may affect the handling. -
Toyota Avensis - New Engine 24 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I phoned my car rescue firm and they told me that a rod had gone down through something and basically there was nothing he could do so he towed me home. I am no mechanic and don't claim to know much about the workings of a car engine. My questions are simple. Does this sound repairable and if so what would I possibly be looking at having done (engine wise and money wise). -

Ford Galaxy - no spare wheel 7 Apr 2010 (Forum)
bought a new Galaxy Ghia last June Yesterday hit a pothole(thanks Herts CC) and got a puncture rang the RAC told them yes I have a spare wheel .Oh no I didn t there is no provision for one This was 6.45 am fortunately I was only 2 miles from home but it totally screwed my day up what should have taken a few minutes wasted several hours .What happens at times like Christmas when no tyre shop is open I do not know and on motorways you will now have to be towed for a simple puncture .What makes it worse is they provide a tyre repair kit for an amateur to use this is just asking for a blow out do Ford want legal action ??? How long is it before someone is killed for this penny pinching By all means have a spare as an extra but design your cars with space for a spare And Fords pathetic excuse it is government policy to save fuel so cars need to be lighter all I can say is b******ks I will never buy a Ford or any other vehicle without a spare ever again -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 99 1.9HDi will not start 20 Dec 2009 (Forum)
My peugeot 306 L hdi 2.0L estate,(1999), just cut out on me after it had been running o.k. The breakdown engineer could not start it, so towed me home. I took it to a peugeot dealer the diagnostics could not be accessed, they told me a new wiring loom + ecu MIGHT be required (cost £2400.00) When the engine cut out there was no engine mil light on the dash, yet the engine would turn over but would not start. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 01 1.8 Please help... my car won't start 21 Nov 2009 (Forum)
My guess is that I'm going to need a diagnostics test run, however, with her not starting, I'm going to have to have her towed, I think. I'm a 24 year old female and am worried about being majorly ripped off by a garage. I'm open to any/all suggestions. Please help!! -
Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 97 1.2 Will not fire upll turn over thow 5 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I had driven it to work and parked it up with no problems, but I had a slight smell of petrol in the cabin. a couple of days early I had done a long journey down to Devon, and on the way back I had filled the tank to the top there was a slight blip in the power, but it ran home ok, but as I said a few days later it had a slight smell of petrol and would not start. the RAC said it looks like the fuel pump was not working and towed me home. Is it that, do you think? Also, the engine management light flashes when I try and start the car. The RAC said that that is probably when the car tries to turn over it all getting confused, and that something is wrong (I don't need a flashing light to tell me that)!! -
Car price guides. 9 Jul 2007 (Forum)
After looking at the latest parkers guide and taking into consideration it has done 26000 miles in 11 months the guide figure comes out at £11430, the car has a few expensive extras such as a makers detachable tow bar, optional rear spoiler and optional rear bass speaker. The car looks in good nick apart from 2 small marks at the rear which he is going to send pics of tonight. I have spoke over the phone and he has said he would come down to £12500 maybe a little more, do you think there is too large a gap for hm to come down that much. -
Using Dexron III instead of MErcon V 25 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Can anyone tell me is it OK to use Dexron III instead, and change regualrly, eg every 6months or 1year (I do approx 8,000 miles a year) as this is an easy job to do. I intend to use my Mazda6 for towing a 4berth caravan, so wish to installa fluid cooler, and replace the very fluid regularly. Need to do a fluid change in the meantime anyway, as stuff in it is discoloured.... Apparnetly Mazda6 autobox is same as that used in Ford Focus, if that helps (anyone know what fluid gets used in this ?) -

Galaxy turns over - won't start 30 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Sat pm - taking daughters to see other g'parents, Gal proceeds fine at first then after about 1 mile just stops completely. Will turn over and over but no life. AA man flummoxed, so he towed it to our (old) local garage in Portsmouth (we now live in Swindon - great!). I need to call the garage in the morning to explain - would be glad of any pointers/advice? Thanks, AdrianM -
Flatbed Trailers - Where? 2 Sep 2003 (Forum)
The one I use regularly has a maximum gross weight of 2600kgs, hence effectively a two tonne payload. I tow with a Vauxhall Monterey (Isuzu Trooper), which has a plated gross train weight of around 5500. It weighs around 2000 itself, so, something with a MGW of 3500 would be ideal. If these things exist. -
An expensive lesson 16 Nov 2002 (Forum)
The cost of my new engine was about £3000 and had it been much more then it would have been a toss up between fixing it and towing it to the breakers. Another thing, modern cars are complex and expensive to fix so before you let a friend/relative/neighbour loose on it just consider what would happen if the engine goes pop because of what they? -
Used 'new' Range Rovers 11 Sep 2001 (Forum)
I am shortly about to look for an early 'new' Range Rover manual diesel to replace my company car. The reason for this is to tow a comparatively heavy, twin axle caravan (1350Kg) which we hope to upgrade to early next year. My budget will only run to dealer prices for an early 'm' 'n' reg Range Rover on which I can expect in the region of 60,000 upwards mileage. -
VW Golf 1.6CL cambelt failure at 40,600 miles 17 Jan 2001 (Forum)
The cambelt on my VW Golf 1.6CL (95M, 40,600 miles) broke as I was trying to start the car yesterday morning. It was towed to the nearest VW dealership whose service dept has just called me to tell me that after replacing the belt, the engine was misfiring and they were suspecting bent valves. The total figure quoted for the repairs was just over 700 pounds. -
