  • Volkswagen Golf - Finding a Good Independent Garage? 21 Nov 2019 (Forum)
My 4 year old VW Golf GT broke down last week.    The part they claim was at fault costs around £80. However, it takes 5 hours to fit with dissembling the car etc. The main dealership I went to charges over £100 per hour for technician labour and so with two lots of diagnostics to find the fault and a few fixtures, the job cost me just under £700.
  • Rover 620 gsi 1993 - rover 620 gsi abs light on 7 Mar 2018 (Forum)
The garage i use has said it might be one of the four abs sensor rings, or anything abs related. The car had an abs pump/modulator replaced a few years ago, so hopefully that has not gone again.   The garage said for the front sensors its better just to replace the cv joint instead of trying to get old one off and a new one on.
  • Any - Scrappage - French style 11 Jan 2018 (Forum)
As part of its “Climate Plan” the French government has launched a scrappage scheme for older vehicles to encourage motorists to trade up to newer cleaner replacements. Your old car (or van) must have been registered before 1997 for petrol vehicles and before 2001 for diesel vehicles … so if introduced in UK probably wouldn’t take too many BR readers' cars off the road!
  • Retaining Reg Number - Scrapping Car - Logistics 20 Jun 2016 (Forum)
Hi, My old Merc is ready for the garage in the sky and I will be scrapping it very soon. The old MOT runs out in a months time and it failed on...
  • Ford Focus MK1 - NCAP - older vehicle safety. 28 Aug 2014 (Forum)
In the frontal impact, the child restraints protected the 18-month and the three-year-old. But the three-year-old’s head was not contained within the restraint during the side impact. I am not in a position to upgrade to a safer vehicle unfortunately and we have a baby on the way, also the Civic is a 3 door which looks like a bit of a pain..But more alarming is the first sentence in the test.
  • 60 plate Astra- two engines in two years 4 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Been talking to my niece, whose friend's Astra's engine blew up last night due to lack of oil and they had to be towed 130 miles home. When I thought this was an old car, I was shocked to hear this was a 60 plate, which had recently had a full service, and apparently the engine blew up a year again due to lack of oil. This clearly is pathetic on a 2 year old fully serviced car and now the dealer is saying that her friend has to pay for the second engine, even though it was not his fault.
  • BR members called 'scholarly' by academics 5 Jun 2009 (Forum)
He said it had enabled him to impress the salesman at the garage who had told him, no, the car didn't have a DPF and he was quite right to want it not to have one... As it happens they are both Old Etonians. Etonians don't always know the meaning of the word scholarly, but these two certainly do.
  • Shelf life and age of "new" tyres 28 Nov 2008 (Forum)
v=ITpyCdIdkW8 On the back of that, I checked the tyres on my 05-plate 108k mile car which I bought a few months ago, and found I had three 2007 tyres and one mysterious 2004 one, which surely couldn't have been original to the car at that mileage? Food for thought, though - how old are your tyres?

Am I right or am I just becoming an old git? Resist the easy answer, please.
  • Ford Galaxy (1995 - 2006) - Too good to be true? 2 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I've just bought a car (but not paid yet) off fleabay. Its a 2002 FORD GALAXY GHIA 1.9 TDI AUTO (82600 miles) for £5500 I've HPI'd it and it came back OK. It said the Estimated market value is £8,112. The condition sounds pretty good with a few minor knocks/ scuffs (Its a 6 year old car so it will have a few).
  • Mercedes Benz E-Class W124 Estates (1985 - 1996) - Battery Maintenance 17 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Jump start and we were off. £68 later at Euro Car Parts we have a 096 Bosch Silver Maintenance free battery. I know it is blindingly obvious but I have never been keen on maintenance free batteries. The old one needed a top up every 9 months; hardly hard work and it gave nearly 10 years service.
  • Trading in vs. selling privately 14 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I have a 14 year old Honda CRX (93 model) VTi with 110k miles. It's been great, but as I have an 8 month old baby it's time to get something with a back seat. I fancy a Clio 172 or a Peugot 306 Gti and only want to spend £3-4K max.
  • Pirelli P6000s really that good? 9 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I used to have four Michelin Pilot Exalto which were fantastic - best tyres I\'ve ever used but they\'re now discontinued. Long story but old car got written off and new car (same as before, 99T Vectra 2.0 GLS) which I bought in March was fitted with brand new P6000s (195/65/15 VR), which I thought great because I\'ve heard people rave about them.
  • Number plate styles 19 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Post 1973 classic cars - if you have just finished restoring, say, a 1974 Triumph TR6, do you have to use the new style lettering, which will look as much out of period as reflective plates on a Jowett Javelin. 3. Is it now illegal to sell reflective plates with the old style lettering?
  • Immaculate, with excellent MOT history, no SH 27 Nov 2023 (Forum)
I've seen a 15 year old car for sale, immaculate, 2 owners, excellent MOT history, with no significant advisories ever and any have been sorted by the next MOT, but there's no service history or receipts. Does the condition and excellent MOT record negate the lack of service history?
  • Seat Leon - Evap 19 Feb 2023 (Forum)
The dealership today told me it’s the evap and they’ll replace it under warranty. Is it normal for this to happen when the car is less than 3 years old and has done under 20,000 miles? Thanks Louise
  • VW Polo - Coolant 15 Nov 2021 (Forum)
HI,  The coolant for my Polo should be G13 but this seems hard to find, most of it is G12+.  The G13 I have seen is either green or yellow and mine is pink.  The car was 2 years old when I bought it and I'm sure it's the original still in. Does anyone know if G12 would be ok to use?  Any advice welcome.  Thanks.
  • Honda FRV CRDI - Your views please 25 Jun 2020 (Forum)
Would like to own one of these unique cars. But they are getting old now and main dealers won’t have any to sell. What are the drawbacks if any and with my low mileage should I be considering a petrol . But I do like the low end torque the diesel profile usually provides.

  • VW Sharan TDI 1.9 - Smell 8 Mar 2015 (Forum)
Car is just over a year old from new. I've noticed a warning sound recently which seems to indicate a frost (star) setting at 4 degrees C. Thought nothing of it as can't smell much at my age! Wife says there is an acrid smell in the cabin.
